GENERIC CONVENTIONS
General Conventions of a Magazine CoverThe general function of a front cover is to sell the magazine. It needs to be eye-catching, brightly coloured and interesting.
The logo makes the brand instantly recognisable for the customer.
There are a variety of fonts, sizes and colours used on the front cover in order to make it interesting for the reader and for certain things to stand out.
Main shot – one celebrity. Usually shot in a close-up (head and shoulders) or a medium shot (upper body) as seen on the example.Shot in a studio and is always the feature article of the issue. The person will generally be looking directly at the reader as it is welcoming. However, like this cover, they sometimes look away to create a certain effect.
Cover lines are the main text on the cover which entice the reader and advertise articles inside the magazine.
There are usually a palette of colours (3) used to create a style throughout the issue.
Web address used to entice reader to website.

Layout/structure
Left side third: is where a lot of the important information for the issue is placed. This can be because of the way it is stacked in the shop but mainly because people read left to right.
Barcode, issue number, date and price: are usually on the bottom right of the page because they are most insignificant. However, here they are on the bottom left.
Masthead (logo) on top left of the magazine
On well known magazines the image overlaps the masthead
Contents is layered over the top of the image
Celebrity's face is never covered by text
Presentational devicesRange of fonts and text sizes used to differentiate content. Also shows which parts of text are more important. Plain fonts keep it easy to read and gender neutral.
Colour theme is maintained throughout (red, white and yellow) which are gender neutral colours and the background colours (pink and green) suggest a mix between female and male.
Maintains the house style of XXL.

Representation
Representation of A$AP Rocky
His gold teeth and chain associate with money. The close-up shot makes him
seem intimidating and close to us which could suggest
intimacy or a sign of aggression. He is looking directly at the camera and
has his mouth open which is eye-catching for the reader.
Representation of Lily AllenOn this cover Lily is being presented in a sexual manner. We associate panthers as majestic and fierce animals. The colour
black is secretive and mysterious, making Lily seem appealing. There is
also a full body shot to show off that she isn’t wearing a top and her bottom half
is black which makes her seem sexy. The way she is peering over her shoulder
with her leg bent suggests she is trying to be flirty.
Representation of EminemOn this cover Eminem comes across as intimidating and masculine. It is a
medium shot so we can see his straight face and crossed arms which
represents him as strong. He has a plain vest on which makes us look at
his necklace with the cross on, suggesting he is religious. His
tattoos also stand out which we can associate with masculinity.
