FY15 End-of-Year Strategy Highlights July 29, 2014 AI – Academic Innovation AI 1A – Evaluate the academic program inventory for additions and deletions.

-Each academic program is evaluated on a five year cycle which includes investigation of enrollment trends. -Each year Academic Council reviews a two-year projection of upcoming academic programs under consideration. -Each year the low producing programs data is received from THECB and reviewed by academic leadership for appropriate action.

AI 1B – Expand engineering and health profession programs.

AI 1C – Expand graduate programs.

-There are 3 doctoral and 5 MS programs in our list of proposed programs between now and 2016. AI 2A – Expand the mission of the Center for Instructional Innovation (CII) to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration, promote scholarship of teaching and learning, and implement best practices in teaching and learning.

AI 2B –Use the campus master plan as a guide to pursue campus enhancements.

AI 3A – Use predictive modeling to continually identify emerging risk factors and possible gaps in provision of student support programs.

- Connecting with Dr. Mike Haynes to identify the emerging risk factors each semester. - Reassessing the risk factors for the Fall 2014 semester (and each subsequent semester).

AI 3B – Develop and implement innovative mechanisms to proactively connect students to appropriate academic support programs.

- Utilizing Starfish Early Alert with selected summer faculty (pilot group) and selected First Year Faculty teaching the course in the Fall 2014 semester. - Creating a mentoring group for FTIC students associated with their first-year seminar

AI 4A – Strengthen the quality of teaching, research and service programs.

AI 4B – Strategically hire faculty focused on emerging program needs and based upon a philosophical student-focused approach.

AI 4C – Create an innovative Think Tank focused on academic achievement and student success. - Sponsoring a “Texas Success Initiative/Developmental Education” Think Tank in Fall 2014 and an “International Recruitment” Think Tank to include other higher education institutions in Spring 2015.

ST – Student Transformation ST 1A – Require a minimum of 3 Applied Learning Experiences for every student to include an internal/external internship; a multicultural experience through a service learning or study away/abroad; and a third proposed by the student as meeting the ALE objectives.

ST 1B – Develop innovative alternatives to replace traditional developmental education

- DONE - 30% of the developmental education course has a non-course based component. - Implement the Integrated Reading and Writing courses to replace the traditional developmental reading and developmental writing courses. - We require each student who is TSI liable in two or more areas to take the learning frameworks course.

ST-1C -- Implement a first-year seminar that increases learning and study skills in the discipline

ST 1D – Expand proactive academic advising

-Two (2) staff advisors participate in the week-long National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Summer Institutes which allowed for networking and collaborating with other advising professionals involved with retention, persistence, and advising activities. -The Center’s Executive Director continues its work with the Texas A&M System Advising Advisory Council and its efforts related to identification of best practices and assuring compliance with THECB guidelines and best practices. -The Center staff has also continues its collaborative efforts by providing academic advisor training to academic departments, working with Career Services and Residential Living and Learning on future joint-initiatives, and participating in seven (7) successful summer orientation sessions.

ST 1E – Increase the use of flipped and hybrid courses

ST 2A – Develop and implement a comprehensive co-curricular program that reinforces student learning outcomes

ST 3A – Enhance the impact of the university’s core values on student success

ST 3B – Increase enrollment of international students

- Currently, we are focusing our efforts on the recruitment of sponsored and exchange students from Latin American countries. This initiative focuses on the 100,000 Strong in the Americas initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. - We created a “Texan 2 Texan” peer mentoring program for domestic students to mentor international students (and vice versa).

ST 3C – Achieve Hispanic-Serving Institution status

ST 3D – Implement a comprehensive holistic wellness program

-Wellness task force has been developed. Worksite wellness committee and the student life wellness group has been included in the discussions this summer. -Task force will resume meeting in fall semester with addition of students to review data, effective practices and conduct audit of current programs. -To provide comprehensive alcohol/other drugs and sexual assault/violence prevention education and awareness for all incoming students, the decision was made to strategically abandon AlcoholEdu and contract with Campus Clarity. -The Alcohol/Other Drugs and Violence Prevention position has been placed on hold due to the hiring freeze.

ST 3E – Implement multicultural programming that will reach more students with greater impact.

-Diversity & Inclusion will host a screening of Stolen Education film as part of 2014 Hispanic Heritage Month and sponsored the first Leaders 4 Diversity Conference in April. Over 80 students, faculty, and staff attended the conference —these are just two examples of how we are using NSSE data to drive multicultural programming on campus. -The International Programs office sponsored their second annual Holi Festival in April, slightly over 350 students, faculty, and staff attended the festival. -Diversity & Inclusion, along with Center for Academic Readiness & Success, will launch the “Academic High Achievers (Aha!)” Program in August 2014 that will work to mentor 550 undergraduates using Noel-Levitz risk factors and on-going partnerships with First Year Seminar instructors. -Diversity & Inclusion is collaborating with Employee Services and Institutional Research to explore a university climate survey to help drive targeted programming related to increasing the impact of multicultural initiatives

DE – Distinctive Engagement DE 1A – Strengthen partnerships with community colleges, universities, and P-12 systems.

-Plans in place to add one transfer program at each outreach site (FW, Waco, Midlothian) during 14-15. -In discussions with TCC NW to deliver junior level undergraduate classes to their Early College High School students (this effort is a joint initiative to serve these academically talented students in response to their needs). -Working toward a unique approach to deliver a collaborative degree program. (NOTE from Rynearson: plans are not finalized, so not ready to name the program in a document yet…just sharing this so that it is noted.)

DE 1B – Strengthen mutually beneficial partnerships with business and industry groups and friends of the university

DE 1C – Establish a center for community engagement.

-A proposal to create the Tarleton Center for Community Engagement has been drafted and will be sent in August to the Board of Regents for November consideration. -Outreach Directors are drafting community engagement proposals and will propose initiatives by this Fall. At a minimum 3 locations will deliver by the end of FY 15 and 2 by FY 16. -CE is partnering with CII to host the Last Lecture Series. -CE is partnering with ALE to host conferences to showcase Service Learning Activities and all ALEs.

DE 1D – Implement a comprehensive capital campaign

-Set a capital campaign goal… Consultants have made a recommendations for what that goal should be. -Implement a systematic… Moves management is in the beginning phases. Research is complete, and the next step is to analyze findings to determine how to adapt it to fit our needs.

DE 2A – Launch a marketing and branding campaign

DE 2B – Develop a needs assessment and identify pre-existing data that continually provide opportunities to improve communication processes.

DE 2C – Based upon identified needs, implement solutions that improve communication processes including social media.

DE 3A – Enhance the external recognition of Tarleton programs.

DE 3B – Enhance the national reputation of distinctive academic programs.

ES – Exemplary Service ES 1A – Pursue the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.

ES 1B – Incorporate service standards into position descriptions and annual reviews

ES 1C – Implement ongoing assessments of constituent service satisfaction.

-An assessment of student schedule is already in place with the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (OIRE) through 2020. These surveys do measure aspects of student satisfaction as well as areas related to academic and co-curricular development. -The Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness has met with Angie Brown to discuss either utilizing the University of Texas’ Survey of Organizational Excellence as a measure of faculty/staff satisfaction or creating an in-house document. -OIRE is meeting with Elizabeth Wallace/Lathes Towns to determine a method of assessing parent satisfaction.

ES 2A – Identify and resolve service risks, problems and opportunities.

ES 2B – Develop leading edge IT infrastructure and support.

ES 2C – Use Six-Sigma, Lean or other efficiency practices to implement solutions.

ES 3A – Enhance the sustainability program at Tarleton.

-Facilitated the acquisition and installation of new standardized recycling container systems across campus which will increase visibility, awareness, and the volume of materials collected. -Completed the review and evaluation of the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS) program. As noted in the attached document, data entry into STARS will begin this fall.

ES 3B – Incorporate sustainability into the curriculum.
