  • WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDATIONS YOU WANT TO MAKE TO NLM AS A RESULT OF THE LESSONS LEARNED AND THE RESEARCH IDEAS SUGGESTED?

  • Forum RecommendationsDo an outreach database evaluation project - re-consider uses of current databaseCreate baseline info - need partnerships with CDC, UWash, others to fill in the white maps in EpiQMSCreate a database of us - info on the 21+ projects to share with othersNLM should foster ways to work with PIAPHP groups - more introductions, more opportunities

  • Forum RecommendationsUse us in the outreach proposals review processCreate listserv for funded projects while ongoingFoster mentoring relationship for unfunded proposal groupsConsider various funding levels - small starts can build to possible future larger projects

  • Forum RecommendationsExtend EpiQMS to other statesMEDLINEplus opening page in Spanish/other languages (with UK, CA, AU); other expansions to address the links between consumer and public healthNeed to get a handle on importance of local resources, gray litConsider PH subset or PH journals subset in PubMed, or perhaps filters/hedges for PH topics

  • Forum RecommendationsPubMed Central as repository for PH research reportsFactsheets geared toward specific PH workgroups at fed/state/local levels - grow to FAQsProjects on communication patterns as major factor in training and sustainabilityAlong with phased in project idea, match funding levels to expectations/evaluation plans

  • Forum RecommendationsPartner with DLCs to assess current/needed access to information and library servicesPartner internally with our students - provides educational opportunity and extra laborState-to-state communication about what each is doing in PH - warm line, dataset of answers, etc.

  • Forum RecommendationsSubmit section programming ideas to PH/HA Integrate searching of TOXNET info into PubMed Records in PubMed should have direct links to info in HSDB, TRI, etc. Integrate searching of HSTAT info into PubMed

NLMs overall public health goal is to assist in improving the health of communities. NLM can best do this by increasing the application of information services and information technology to improve the health of individuals in communities.NLM basic strategies to achieving its overall goal are to:Promote the development of advanced Public Health data systemsImprove databases/services for Public Health. NLM is in the early stages of planning a review of MeSH subject headings related to public health and inclusion of more public health journals. The recommendation for journal review could be done by Literature Selection Technical Review Committee (LSTRC) in October 2000 or Feb 2001.Assist in connecting and training the Public Health Workforce. (This will be primarily done via the NN/LM which Neil will discuss later.)Work with Public Health agencies and others in addressing health/prevention education for the public

--- to develop the Partners website. The website is used to put up materials in support of the Partners program and to link to other relevant sites that would be of interest to public health professionals.A very important activity was the awarding of 20 projects aimed specifically at providing training and internet connections for local, state, and county public health professionals. As you are aware, three of these projects are here in Texas: Texas Medical Center Library at the Houston Academy of Medicine; Texas Womans University Libraries in Denton; and University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. All 20 projects have a training component and six will provide workstations to improve the Internet connectivity in local public health departments. Several projects are focusing on developing local public health Internet sites which focus on related health data available through local and national sources.
