Transferable Skills

Public Speaking and Presentation Skills: As a theatre major, I was regularly required to get up in front of my classmates, and not only for performances. My position in the department often necessitated using public speaking to give complex directions to a large amount of people. I know how to project, and am comfortable in front of people.

Collaboration and Interpersonal Skills: Theatre is a collaborative art, and we were therefore given instruction on how to work with even the most difficult people. I took a course in collaboration my senior year. I work well in a group on creative projects and maintain professionalism when debates become heated. I can assert my own ideas and yet concede my opinions when either is in the best interest of the project.

Leadership Through Service: I was the Assistant Technical Director of the theatre department for two years, which occasionally required me to take a position of authority over those who I would have otherwise considered equals, making it necessary to find the delicate balance between power and friendship. I am good at directing people through tasks where I have more experience without overstepping my place, and have learned how to be a leader through example. My work in theatre has also often required me to take on tasks and roles that others consider beneath them, and I have developed a mentality of willingness to serve in whatever capacity that I can be most useful in.

Technical Skills: I have designed and built several theatrical sets, and I am good with my hands. I have extensive carpentry skills, as well as experience in painting, welding, lighting, and sound. It does not take me too long to learn how to use something, even if I have never done so before. My experience has given me a proficiency at finding creative solutions to problems, which extends beyond technical issues.
