September Suicide Prevention Month
Education comes first. The VA stresses the importance of indi-
viduals and organizations learning the warning signs of depression
or the sudden presence of risky behavior. But what of the people
that show no classic warning signs, and are hesitant to reach out
because of the stigma behind asking for help?
The Military Crisis Line 1-800-273-8255 provides free, confiden-
tial support to Veterans and their families from qualified profes-
sionals—many of them veterans themselves. Since its launch in
2007, they have answered more than 640,000 calls and made more
than 23,000 life-saving rescues. The Veterans Crisis Line is open
around the clock, seven days a week, and veterans can connect via
phone, anonymous online chat, and text message. Learn about the
signs of crisis. www.veteranscrisisline.net.
AfterDeployment.org provides interactive videos, resources, as-
sessments and more information focusing on PTSD, anger, depres-
sion, and other topics.
MilitaryMentalHealth.org provides anonymous mental health and
alcohol self- assessments, along with additional resources for fam-
ily members and loved ones.
The National Center for Telehealth and Technology has put to-
gether a list of mobile applications and healthcare provider re-
sources for service members, veterans, and their families. View or

Suicide is preventable. During Suicide Prevention Month, show
support to those in need and their loved ones by spreading the
word about these and other confidential resources that are right
at their fingertips.

Great Pumpkin Festival - Pumpkin Festival Washington Square (East Park), Oswego, NY. Oswego is
one of 20 international weigh-in sites for pumpkin growers competing in the Great Pumpkin Com-
monwealth. Growers from Oswego, and throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New England and Can-
ada will be competing in Oswego. Past winners have been 1,000-pound (in 1996), a 752-pound
pumpkin, a 731-pound squash, and a 107-pound watermelon. There is also live music, arts and
crafts vendors and demonstrations, pumpkin carving lessons, ghost stories told by City Historian
Rosemary Nesbitt, scarecrow building and pumpkin carving contests, a mini farmer's market and

Admission to the Punkin Chunkin' Festival is free and begins at 11am featuring competitive firings throughout the day with awards at 5pm. The festival will have two categories of competition, which also compete against each other for the Best Overall Design, which is the farthest throw for the height of their trebuchet. The two categories are: Adults (18 & older) and Youth (11-17
