Happy Anniversary!

40th Anniversary Year

From the (new) President.....

"Well, I suppose it's about time that I introduce myself."I'm Cindy Dooley, and when I'm not having fun with WNBA, I run a little library at theWayne County Juvenile Detention Facility. I took over the reins as Chapter Presidentfrom Amy Keyzer last June 1, 2005. Luckily for all of you, Amy and the rest of the boardhave been readily available, via email, to provide this newbie with much needed guidance.Amy also passed along to me a tidy, organized binder of all the chapter records from hertenure. Treasurer Nancy Bagnasco has kept me focused while National Past PresidentMargaret Auer provides answers to everything, and I do mean everything. Board membersLaurel Brandt, Celia Morse, Triza Crittle, and Betty Farhat have diligently handled myrelentless emails.

I was privileged to represent Detroit at the WNBA National Annual Meeting last June inWashington, DC. It was both fun and interesting to meet with other WNBA members fromacross the country, to hear about the activities ofthe different chapters, and to share ideas.

Over the summer, the Detroit Chapter was surveyed about the benefits of membership andscheduling/involvement preferences. The survey results showed that our members valueprogramming as well as social/professional relationships. With regard to schedulingprograms & activities, Wednesday evenings were preferred by most people (but not every-one), Thursday second, with Tuesdays and Saturdays tied for third. A surprising number ofpeople can be available for occasional events on a Friday or Saturday evening (as wediscovered with our "Girls' Night Out" last summer).

At the National meeting in June, Jill Tardiff asked the Detroit chapter to prepare a paperfor other chapters on the topic of how to recruit more librarians. The chapter needs tocreate an advisory committee who can communicate by email. The project needs input frompeople who have a unique and/or broad background in librarianship. Would you beinterested in participating on an em ail committee that would help generate a "bestpractices" paper on recruiting librarians? What do you think? Suggestions? Mike Leber, the National Secretary from the DC chapter, and Carolyn Wilson, WNBA NationalLong-Range Planning Chair, who is an academic librarian from Nashville, have alreadyprovided some input for our project. Mike is a retired librarian who has worked in publiclibraries around the country. Please volunteer to help!

Our 40th Anniversary party at Detroit Public Library on January 19, 2006, was an excitingevent. Our chapter website was launched, with rave reviews from our members. Be sure totake a look: www.wnba-books.org/detroit. For members- only password, please contact me.

In Good TimeLast summer, National President Jill Tardiff requested that each chapter identify members of 10 years or more for theWNBA's "President's Circle." Jill published that list in the fall issue of The Bookwoman. Did you know that five of thewomen on the list have been members of the Detroit Chapter for more than TWENTY years? They include:

Margaret Auer

Denise Moll

Celia Morse

Edith Phillips

Barbara Walker

(26 years)

(26 years)

(21 years)

(36 years)

(23 years)

Special thanks go to Margaret Auer, who culled through nearly 40 years of chapter records to glean (one of Nancy'sfavorite words) this information. Margaret was also able to compile a list of all the former Detroit Chapter Presidents. That list is included on the chapter website.

How about some more chapter history trivia? Which chapter member served 2 separate terms as Chapter Presidentand was one of only two recipients of the Chapter's Distinguished Member Service Award? Ailsweroll Page8.

40 Members for 40 YearsFor the DetroitChapter's 40th anniversary year, we're invitingformer members to rejoinour group and enjoy thecelebration. They willreceive a "Come on Back!"letter outliningour special programs for 2006, but we realize thathome and work addresses change. Ifyou know past members of WNBA,please extend a personal invitationto bepart of this wonderful milestone year. Our goal is to have "40 members for 40 years" - the more, the merrier, ofcourse!

Non-members Correspondence ListIn order to keep key people and organizations in our local book world informed about WNBA'sprograms andinitiatives,we are compilinga non-members correspondence list. They willreceive notices of our meetings, pressreleases, etc. Ifyou can think of people who should be on this list, please let me know. We are already publicizingour events to the libraryworldvia TLNand Wayne State University's LISP alumni listserv. To reach authors, editors, teachers, and other non-librarians, we hope to contact book-related associations and companies, such asMichiganAssociation of Media in Education (MAME),Thomson Gale, Border's, Women in Communications, andDetroitWorkingWriters, among others.

Detroit Membership DirectoryOn the DetroitChapter Website we decided to provide the membership directory online in the password-protectedmembers-only section. This will save printing costs, and the information can be more frequently updated. TheDetroit membership directory should not be confused with the WNBA National online directory. The Nationalversion required you to fill out a permissions form because your information would be shared among members ofall WNBA chapters. The Detroit directory is only for Detroit members.

The WNBA-Detroit Chapter's first fall meeting was Wednesday, October 19, 2005, at the New PekingChinese Restaurant. Our speaker was Denise Jenkins, author of Where Do Baby Teeth Go?, whopresented a program called "I Bought Jackie's Bathing Suit."

Denise spoke about her role model, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who was an example of grace underpressure and modern working motherhood. Denise had actually met Mrs. Kennedy when Denise was alittle girl and toured the White House; this experience had made her interested in President Kennedy'swidow's life. When Mrs. Onassis's estate was auctioned off, Denise unsuccessfully bid for severalitems. Later, more items from the estate were put up in an online auction, and Denise bought a bathingsuit that Jackie had owned before she was married. WNBA members had an opportunity to see thebathing suit and various other items related to the former First Lady.

Denise also spoke about the self-publishing process for her first book, a children'spicture book entitled Where Do Baby Teeth Go? The story is one she told herchildren when they were little, and it inspired her son to become a dentist. Whenshe was unable to place the book with a publisher, she decided to pay forpublication herself.

The process was far longer and more complicated than she had expected. Forinstance, she had provided descriptions of pictures to go with a particular page oftext, expecting that the publisher would provide illustrations. However, the pub-lisher expected her to provide illustrations, and illustrators charged up to several hundred dollars perpicture. Her husband agreed to do the illustrations, saving her a great deal of money, and the bookbecame a family endeavor.

A coffee mug with the WNBA logo was raffled off at the meeting. These very generously sized mugswere donated by Margaret Auer. They can be purchased from the Detroit Chapter for $12 each.

BOOK REVIEW

Metro Girl, by Janet Evanovich (New York: HarperCollins, 2004)

"Just because I know how to change a guy's oil doesn't mean I want to spend the rest of mylife on my back, staring up his undercarriage." With that first sentence, Janet Evanovichintroduces a new character, Alexandra Barnaby - Barney to her friends. In contrast toEvanovich's established series character, Stephanie Plum, Barney knows her way aroundcars and is not clumsy. She does share Stephanie's loyalty to family, however. WhenBarney's brother "Wild" Bill goes missing in Florida, Barney flies out from Baltimore to savehim. There she becomes entangled with organized crime, Cuban refuges, the FBI, and asexy NASCAR driver whose boat Bill has apparently stolen. It all adds up to a fun romp upand down the coast, with a climax that includes a motorcycle gang and NASCAR drivers

and pit crews. Barney and "NASCAR Guy" Sam Hooker provide plenty of witty repartee inthis exciting, laugh-out-Ioud funny series debut.
