In addition to the EPA, there are other organizations that help ensure the water we drink meets some minimum standards and does not pose a health risk. One of these is NSF, who was also the gracious host of our evening session. There are a number of NSF/ANSI Standards that deal with water quality and the equipment that helps us deliver or treat the water at our sites. Some of the standards you should familiarize yourself with and

safety in our industry. For those of you who have not been to the NSF facility in Ann Arbor – it is impressive to say the least. I am hoping we can try and do a tour there in next year’s ASPE EMC programming.

Hello from your VP Tech!

Given the recent Flint water debacle, November’s meeting was both interesting and hot topic for us Michiganders. We started the evening at the Ann Arbor Water Treatment Plant where Brian Steglitz did a nice job of taking ASPE folk around the plant. Since I had to get to NSF in time to check people in, I wasn’t able to stay for the tour, but I heard good things from

the other attendees. On my way out, I did grab a copy of 2015 City of Ann Arbor Water Quality Report. In there, I learned that the City of Ann Arbor’s water comes from both surface and ground water sources. The majority of the water comes from Huron River and the remainder is made up from multiple wells. Our technical session for the evening went through a lot of contaminants typically found in Michigan water. The Water Quality Report gave a good overview about contaminants: “In order to ensure tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk.”

What contaminants are they talking about? Well there are different types of contaminants that may be found in source water: Microbial (viruses and bacteria), Inorganic (salts and metals), Pesticides and Herbicides (which typically come from runoff), Organic chemicals (synthetic and volatile organic) and Radioactive (natural or caused by industry).

Our Technical presentation, by Jim Stewart, focused on which of the above categories of contaminants we typically see in Michigan potable water sources. For most of us, including me, our source water comes from private wells. Michigan is the #1 state for number of households served by wells. So what contaminants do we normally see in our

VOCs (volatile organic chemicals).

Jim Stewart gave a lot more information on the above contaminants, and also addressed how to handle these contaminants in our projects – but I won’t reiterate the information here in an effort to encourage you all to attend the next time we talk about this issue!

In case anyone reading is wondering if we talked about Legionella as a contaminant – we did not focus on this during this meeting because in February 2017 we will be having our joint meeting with ASHRAE where we will be focusing on the ASHRAE and NSF standards that deal with Legionella control. I hope to see you all there!

opposing the water withdrawal increase, Although, the deadline for this request was November 3rd, 2016, I was able to get approval from the Eastern Michigan Chapter of ASPE (EMC-ASPE) Board to compose and submit a letter on behalf of our chapter opposing NWNA’s current request and requesting a 30 day extension of the comment period and a public hearing.

Our letter joined with many others from various organizations and individuals did make a difference. On November 4th,

Environmental Quality (MDEQ) voted to extend the comment period for the additional 30 days as requested, until December 3rd, 2016. In addition, the MDEQ will hold a public hearing to discuss the proposed increase in water withdrawal from Nestle’ Water North America, Inc. MDEQ will issue a news release with the date and location of the public hearing once the meeting has been scheduled.

On November 22nd, 2016 I received another notice that the MDEQ had extended the comment period an additional 90 days, thus allowing for comments to be accepted until March 3rd, 2017.

More of Michigan’s Freshwater at risk:

Upon arriving home from the convention, on November 3rd, 2016, I received an email request from the Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation (MCWC) asking me to provide a letter to oppose Nestlé Waters North America (NWNA), Evart, Osceola County, latest request to increase their ground water withdrawal rate from

Production Well PW101, located in Stanwood, Michigan, from 150 gallons per minute (GPM) to 400 GPM and to request a 30 day extension of the comment period and a public hearing.

If you are not aware this request stems from a long fought, David and Goliath, battle between the MCWC and NWNA which began in December 2000, when NWNA (formerly known as Great Spring Water of America Inc.), a subsidiary of the Perrier Group of America Inc., bought the groundwater rights to the Sanctuary Springs property and began taking steps to construct a bottling plant in Mecosta County, Michigan.

In 2001 NWNA installed four (4) wells on what is known as the Sanctuary Springs property. Permits were issued by the MDEQ to allow the wells a combined pumping rate of 400 GPM from the local aquifer. This large withdrawal from the local aquifer generated large concerns with the local community and spawned

The long fought battle of MCWC vs. NWNA eventually reached the Michigan Court of Appeals and Michigan State Supreme

reached in 2009. The settlement allows NWNA to pump from the local aquifer at a reduced average rate of 218 GPM (approximately 313,000 gallons per day), with restrictions on the spring and summer withdrawals, from the four (4) wells located on the Sanctuary Springs property. The settlement agreement critically impaired our rights as citizens to protect our State’s natural resources, because the bottling of Michigan spring water is the

Greetings from thirty thousand feet! This week, I wrap up my three leg tour of the United States at Autodesk University in Las Vegas. I will be attending training on everything BIM and meeting with members of our company from across the nation to discuss our future path.

I returned from The ASPE Convention in Phoenix just over a week ago. It was a

great event with a tremendous amount of opportunities to learn and explore our craft. I also met a lot of new contacts and touched base with many familiar faces that I now consider friends and trusted colleagues. I am looking forward to meeting with several of these people over the coming weeks and months to learn about some of the great ideas they presented in our business meetings in Phoenix.

were on Revit family creation, domestic booster pump selection and sizing, diesel fuel systems, construction management, and

ratings went to the booster pump class and the diesel fuel class.

accomplished that feat, but they also made great use of time and kept it lively and interesting. I cannot cover all of the details of these classes in our newsletter, but you can see me for more information on them. There were a total of

coverage in as many as possible. Please contact us for more information.

Another class that I took regarded construction management from the perspective of a mechanical engineer. The speaker

information, and close out documents. I am not an engineer, so it was fascinating to hear his perspective of the process. Before I go any further, I would like to go on the record as saying that this class was a good one, and the speaker really knew his stuff. I will say, however, that he beat up on the contractor a fair amount, which is what my badge says at these conventions. My closing comments on the class were to make it a point to communicate

VP EducationMark Lamberson, CPD

with the contractors on the project as early as possible. This probably seems taboo on many projects. Aren't we supposed to be enemies? I think the misconceptions and stereotypes we all face on both sides of the aisle are mostly propagated by outdated stigma and lack of communication.

Sure, there are "those contractors" for the engineers, just

just want a good product at the end of the job. If we have a kick off meeting with all parties involved at the onset, we can realize the objectives and standpoints of each other and work together to achieve them.

The bitterest pills for me that arose in the class were the canned form letters and statements that the presenter

Contained within were statements like "Always reject the

information in a submittal or RFI, reject it and copy the spec section in the response." Wouldn't it be a lot easier to sit down after the contracts are awarded and go over each process in lieu of wasting all of that time?

The last statement I will discuss was one that I found a lot of humor in, but it proves a point, too. The speaker told the engineers in the audience to demand all submittals at the same time. If the contractor doesn't submit on every item in the spec, he said to reject it. Wow. This ideology may work on a small project, but what about a large hospital? The delays created by this could be disastrous.

Now, here is the punchline... One of the form letters that the engineer sent included this statement; "The engineer will return all submittals within ten days from receipt." So I can

of the submittals in at once, and we just may be able to pull it off. You'd better believe that the engineer's mailbox will be full on the eleventh day, though.

The bottom line is, let's work together. If you are on a project and my name shows up on the contractor's contact list, please give me a call. I would be glad to talk to you and try to help the process in any way that I can. You never know, we may be long term resources for each other, just like the ones I found in Phoenix.

The good, the bad, and the ugly; the good, the holidays are upon us and I did not hear any dissension from the article I wrote last month. I wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving.

The bad, during the convention in Phoenix, I lost my bid to become your ASPE VP

thing. Let me congratulate my friend Vince Scriboni on retaining his board position. He has already reached out to chapters in an effort to increase members. The ugly, nothing…but it is a catchy phrase.

There are other good things to report on too. I was proud to be the November guest speaker for the ASPE Central Indiana satellite-to-be Ft. Wayne Chapter. I want to personally thank chapter president Gary Borgmann CPD for reaching out to me and to those who attended. It is always an honor to speak to our engineering and distribution communities.

While I am at it, let me report on a few other ASPE black-tie Banquet moments that are close to my heart. The ASPE Research

In December, I will attend the ASPE New York Chapter Holiday Party and hope to bring back new ideas. I may have opportunities to visit the Washington D.C. and Chicago Chapters in early 2017. Volunteer opportunity with ESD

Calling all members! On January 23rd I’ll be attending the Future City Competition as a Presentation Day Judge, which is one of a few different ways to volunteer. This will be my 4th time participating in the event and I can’t wait to see what this year’s teams have put together. I’m

always inspired by their enthusiasm and creativity.

Future City is for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. This year’s theme is “The Power of Public Spaces” and teams from several local schools will be competing. They will write an essay about their ideas for a city of the future and create a Sim City computerized model, which are both judged ahead of time by a separate group of judges. They will also build a physical model with recycled materials and develop a 7-minute presentation which are displayed and judged at the event.

The competition is sponsored locally by the Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) and is just one of the many opportunities for construction industry professionals to mentor the youth in our area and encourage them to pursue careers in engineering. If you would like to participate, there is still time to volunteer. Once you’ve seen the amazing things these young people create, and listened to them excitedly tell you about the future they’ve imagined, I guarantee you’ll be back next year looking for new ways to get involved. Learn more by visiting: http://ww2.esd.org/EVENTS/FutureCity.htm

If you decide to participate, please let one of your ASPE EMC Board Members know so we can celebrate your effort by sharing it with ASPE National and our membership. Let your good deeds inspire others!

we’ve got a pipe for thatHeat-fused Aquatherm polypropylene-random piping systems can be used for virtually any building application and come with a 10-year multimillion-dollar warranty. Throw in material, LEED V4 points and potential labor savings and you’ll see why Aquatherm is your best choice.

You need 80,000 ft of long-lasting pipe for domestic water, heating/cooling, and compressed air, and ideally it would contribute directly to LEED points.
