Spring has finally arrived - “well just” and the sun is out. The days will become longer and the evenings we’ll dance the night away! Aah, seems like such fun. You know what it’s like when the sun comes out? Grin

So we caught up with Arno Carstens who is travelling the globe and making his stance. I love it when South Africans get on their horse and ride the winds and travel the earth, braving what is out there and showing what we are made of, especially in the creative sphere.

Then, moving away from the music we look at our designers. They definitely don’t get half the credit for what they do and they definitely should, plus why aren’t we treating them like the god’s of fashion?! Fashion week has come and gone – I have to admit – why is there such little budget given to these darlings?

The shows at our fashion week were ok! The models even more shocking – I really think the agencies need to brief the poor souls on how to take care of themselves...I mean...GYM and more GYM....if you’re lazy – do yoga darlings!!! We have such creative designers - some pretty cool ones to look out for- Undercuva and Ruff Tung were some of the shows that I watched and they were pretty fabulous!...

Camping and outdoor stomping is the name of the game, get ready and set for Rocking the Dam and Rocking the Daisies...man has this year gone by. Festivals , wellies, great bands and music fans….Smiles all around!

Bliss – what more can I say- Happy Spring everyone – or is it?

Hi Arno, how are you? Where in the world are you?

We just arrived in Switzerland, from Norway and are on our way to Rome, Amsterdam, Venice and Germany - part work, part holiday. After that I’ll be returning to SA to tour my new album Wonderful Wild, start some new project work and do two Springbok Nude Girl show’s! Cannot wait to play with my guys and be creative again. The next couple of years are gonna be interesting!

Well done for doing so well internationally, is this exactly where you wanted to be at?

Yes it’s been an incredible experience so far I am thankful for what we have achieved but I still have a long way to go.

Listen, I am so jealous, I am a big fan of Star sailor, you re-cently worked with one of the band members, and did you collaborate with the band

I met James Walsh through John Giddings, we had a Song Writ-ing session and eventually he gave me one of his songs “Note of Bliss”. I love the song and it’s now on Wonderful Wild so it was well worth it .He is a walking juke box, a very talented guy with a big love for football.

Now tell me, you were pretty Rock n Roll back in the day with a twist of naughtiness, is all that at bay? Or does naughty never leave the Arno?

No, it is still a tightrope act, balancing fun and work but some-times the lines blur and shit happens but that is pretty normal. I got my wild genes from my dad I’m afraid.

Where is your favourite hang out in London? You seem to be spending a lot of time recording there

The taxi ha ha, no I don’t have a favourite hangout, we go to new places all the time. London, as a whole, is just a powerful place for musicians.

Describe a day in the life of Arno

It depends, it’s either

Wake-up then Studio from 11 till 11 or it’s

Wake-up / Gym / Relax / Travel / Sound Check / Relax / Do the show and party / Travel or

Wake-up / Tennis / Blackberry Messaging / DVD’s / Nando’s.

The last one is my favourite!

Your views on ‘Crocs’ you know the rubbery open toed shoes

They are ugly, almost like old rugby shorts. Those, together with a vuvuzela are weapons of mass fashion and moral de-struction ... but I have to admit, I have got the boots for when it rains on the farm. They look like LeGo spaceman boots.

Other than building your international fan base, what other albums are you working on?

I ‘m working on a low-fi female duets album and then a se-cret (for now) project. I am creatively hungry at the moment and for the next couple of months I’ll be working on these things in South Africa.

Where can we keep up to date with your tours?

www.arnocarstens.com / Myspace /Facebook / Twitter ... it’s all out there

Your views on :

Jacob Zuma

Naughty, charismatic friendly guy, the future will deter-mine his legacy. The government constantly scares me with their stupidity; it’s up to Zuma to guide them.

Football

Now that the world cup is over I can say it. I prefer WWF. I’m not really into sport and vuvazella’s suck! Yes !!!

South Africa

It’s my country I choose to die in.

Jack Parrow

Very entertaining, you gotta to love him.

Bubble gum on my boots

It’s one of those lucky songs that caught on, we were lucky guys. It defined the moment, in a SNG shows, where every-one loses a bit of themselves. I think the song brought a lot of release and fun in it’s time.

The Queen

Sweet elderly women. I love the idea of royalty it’s romantic. It spawned Punk music so big up!

A good wine

Defined by Meerlust, Rubicon and my red nose.

Favourite bar

Ooh this is a chapter on it’s own, don’t get me started. Let’s say I am still exploring !!

Best tune

There’s loads, mmm, at the moment “The National ; Sorrow”

whAt’S hot riGht now

Ok darlings, I’ve been on the look-out and these 3 looks are by far my favourites...Spring and Summer

is about being sexy...let the daring you come out...we all know that you want to....

See-thrOugh and Sheer fabrIcS trend

One thing about the summer and spring is that we can get a lot more sexier and fleshy with fashion. Fabrics to look out for are the sheer and flesh-tone ones’s…a nice black no – top that is, always looks good with good pair of trousers or skirt –and good pair of sexy stilettos. Plus sheer fabrics keeps you cool and you can be as daring if you want.

bOyfrIend blazerS

I like boyfriend blazers. Where a nice vest, roll up the sleeves, with a pair of beige shorts and platform shoes…and a for away – to a nice day look .

rIPPed jeanS

there is nothing sexier than a good pair of ripped denims. It seems everyone is getting into this trend including celebs and was seen on some runways in recent shows. So rip it up, sexy yourself with bed hair…and enjoy.

outh Africa + fashion + designers = talented! With so many new and existing fashion designers taking the stage, we most certainely have been given a big selection and variety to choose from. One designer who is definitely making her mark in the industry, is the infamous Doreen Southwood. Fringe

caught up with her, to see what makes her tick and see the designer for who she is.

1. Doreen Southwood almost sounds like a 50’s Hollywood star...your thoughts?

Doreen Southwood is my grandmothers name, she introduced me to the world of fashion and styling.

2. In fact if you were to be a star from back in the day, who would it be and why?

I always loved the boyish but delicate essence of Audrey Hepburn.

3. Would this particular person have had any influence in your design style today?

Fashion era’s gone by forms part of the romantic essence I always try to capture. What I enjoy the most about popular images of this star is that the clothing she wears never dominate her presence.

4. Where did you grow up?

I was born in Cape Town but spent most of my childhood in the North West as well as weekends on farms.

5. Did you have any favourite childhood games?

I loved playing ‘Shop’’Shop’ and ‘Bank’ Bank’

Southwood 6. If you could go back as a character from a fairytale who would it be and why? Sleeping Beauty, love the romantic drama.

7. What music is on your ipod?

Indian Summer, The Magnetic Fields, Boards of Canada, Joy Division, Elefant, Anthony and the Johnsons...

8. Who is your favourite music artist?

This changes all the time, I consistently love Depeche Mode.

9. Do you enjoy art?

Yes, I studied art at Stellenbosch University.

10. What and who is your favourite artist?

This changes all the time. Although I do sculptural work as artist I’m currently really enjoying paintings by Margherita Manzelli, love the performative qualities of the figures she paints. 11. Do you take yourself serious?

I think we are all guilty of this, but surrounding yourself with things that mat-ter for example feeding someone who is hungry brings perspective to personal drama’s.

12. What is the silliest thing you had ever done?

Shaved my head.

13. Are you naughty?

I’m probably not what you’ll describe as a contained person..

f41

14. What is a designers worst nightmare?

There are many, when nothing is on time and people are unreliable.

15. You favourite item you’ve designed thus far?

The sea skirt, the last look at Cape Town Fashion week 2010/11

16. The world according to you?

A very funny place with loads of places to hide.

17. The world according to fashion to you?

An even funnier place...

18. What would you like to see change in the fashion industry?

Local support for South African brands

19. Do you think SA designer get enough exposure?

This has changed dramatically over the past few years, thanks to African Fashion International and the local fashion council.

20. Me me me......? ...is a public space where our customers can get some me me me time.

Let start with the very luxurious interior; step aside, when you see it you will not want to drive it, but be driven! Automatic seat adjustments as you drive to ensure best comfort for the driver and front passenger. As well as the 4-zone automatic air conditioning, allowing each passenger in

the car to decide for themselves how cool they want it to be. For the driver the multimedia interface (MMI) has been designed to amaze. Touch screen to select the Navigation system, your night vision, the auto speed singe rec-ognition system (Now in South Africa, this can be a problem with the 120km/h sign then the 60km/h just 500m behind it). The MMI system will also recognise pedestrians with the night vision feature, which means, the car helps the driver prepare for the worst case scenario.

The car has no problem with its blasting entertainment system! Never want to hear that taxi music again? No problem. Blast your own eardrums! With all this and more to keep you busy inside the car, we hope that you assist in the no cell phone usage while you drive.

Not even text! The car has a built-in blue tooth system, to use as a handsfree kit. You don’t even need to take your keys out mate! The car has a no key enter policy! You just walk over to the car, and like any good Russian woman, she just opens up! Not even a word!

Audi has done very well in the selection of the power that will drive you. You will be pulled around in a 4.2 FSI® quattro® Tiptronic V8 engine with 90° V angle (4 valves/cylinder) engine pushing an amazing power output of 273kW at 6800 rpm and 445 Nm at 3500 rpm in torque. The aluminium used for the Audi Space Frame is a high-strength aluminium frame structure into which all panels are integrated so that they also perform a load-bearing function. Audi Space Frame (ASF) is light, offers greater design freedom for castings and extruded sections than steel.

It also saves you fuel! A very impressive feature is the energy recovery system, which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy during phases when the car is either coasting or braking. When the car ac-celerates again, the battery directs the temporarily stored energy back into the vehicle, to relieve the alternator thereby saving more fuel. Say this with me… freaky cool.

The standard-fit Audi drive select system allows you to adjust individual components at the push of a button, thus altering the characters of your Audi. I told you she is talented. There are four modes available; comfort, dynamics, auto and individual; this last one enables you to decide for yourself which of the vehicle components covered by the system should respond in what way. And that is how you program your car to make it drive the way that you want!

Starting at a price tag of R 1’096’500.00 you should not expect anything less!

Happy driving!

Fringe Magazine took to the streets to find out who was willing to answer a random question or two. What we found were men who were honest and exceptionally funny to boost! This is what you have to say….

You said it...

What is the Worst gift You received from a Woman and pretended to like it? Which

gift Would You have preferred?

f65

Socks! @#$* hate receiving socks! Any gadget or something to do with technology would have done it for me

Byron 24, Graphic Designer

The Titanic DVD!! Seriously! A few years ago I took my girlfriend at the time to watch it at the cinema. She loved the movie, cried for the teary bits and was really into it. I was bored out of mind on the other hand and made the mistake of lying to her to spare her feelings. I said Titanic was going on my list of legendary movies I’ve ever seen and guess what I found under the Christmas tree that year! I would have preferred some nookie after the movie instead of the DVD!

Liam 32, investment Broker

Oh man, my girlfriend and I were browsing the flea market and we came across a stall that sells CD’s. I pointed at a Maxwell CD saying, I was going to buy it for myself when I had the cash. I was a student back then and the cash flow was non-existent for CD’s but always available for beer! The very next day she rocks up and hands me this gift bag with a CD in it…the wrong CD that was next to Maxwell. Die beste Afrikaans tref-fers or something like that! Lesson: Pick up the CD and not point at it!!

I would have loved the Maxwell CD instead dude!

thabang 25, Superhero

The worst gift? Uhm…a portrait or a photo in a frame of the two of us. Man! I would have preferred biltong or beer!!

JP 21(cough, cough) - Sales Manager

What is the sexiest thing a Woman tried to do for You and failed at it?

For our first wedding anniversary my wife decorated our bedroom with rose petals and scented candles! Being adventurous my wife and I decided to do “our thing” on the floor surrounded by these scented candles. After receiving one hell of a massage and covered in oil, let’s just say my wife had her rear end burnt by more than one scented candle and the rest of our night was spent in an ER room. Of course I was blamed for the candles that I did not buy!

Duncan 37, content Producer

A sexy lap dance. She tripped and sprained her ankle badly. Now that’s sexy!!!

JP 21(cough, cough) - Sales Manager

It was Valentine’s Day and she did some sexy dancing, but she failed to check her lin-gerie still had the price tags on.

Byron 24, Graphic Designer

My girlfriend and I were dating for a while when she decided it was time for us to step it up to the next level. She had this whole thing planned out, doing a sexy dance in killer heels. Being a gymnast and super fit she stretched her leg to rest on my shoulder and I`m quite a tall dude! As she did this and her leg touched my shoulder, she did the unthinkable. She let rip, not a cute one I could overlook, but a loud and rude fart a lumberjack would be proud of! Her face went a new shade of red and I was left standing there trying so hard not to laugh and be sympathetic.

Not even Superman could out do how fast she got dressed and disappeared.

“ The shape of the devil is not single and big, he is many and smutty and small bored human beings

who’s only preoccupation is to destroy that which they lack so acutely”-Ayn Rand

There is nothing quite as malicious and wicked, knifing and venomous as the jealousy of a woman. It brings out the darkest aspects of her character, traits that are not so different from those found in your most fearsome of criminals, and your most frightening illogically insane. In this “state of being”, there are no boundaries, no logic, no compassion – there is only the need and desire to destroy, whether in word or deed, their “victim”.

People feel more comfortable destroying what they cannot have or be – for standing with their eyes open to the truth of what they are not (or have ever been), threatens and frightens them, knowing they have hidden in the “safety” of their little cliques, in the comfort of living comatose lives - as opposed to standing solid to their individuality and uniqueness.

So how about we explore a fresh approach to Valentine’s Day (and the rest of the year, for that matter)? How about we refrain from gossiping and fabricating stories, masked under a self-righteous arrogance, that allows us to believe we are any different, any better?

The greatest waste of a life is placing our primary fulfillment within other “men”.

From early childhood we trade our personal desires, our dreams, our ambitions for the collective demands of others, our families and communities, and the world at large. We struggle not for material wealth for the joy it can bring us, but for the prestige, the admiration, the acknowledgement, the acceptance , the stamp of approval – not from ourselves, but from others. We are ‘kept in line’ by an unspoken fear of exclusion, of disapproval, of being outcast and forsaken.

Its time to have the courage to stand tall and say: I will no longer apologize for who I am, how I choose to dress, who I socialize with or how I live my days. I know that time is so finite and I am worth so much more than I give myself credit for, and so much more than I have settled for. Its time to open our eyes and see the beauty in others and in ourselves and to let go of the differences that don’t divide us but in fact make us one and the same.
