Page 2: Fringe Guide 2013

It’s great to support this year’s Fringe and get involved before I take centre stage as official Fringe Curator in 2014.

Being steeped in pop culture and the arts I’m really looking forward to it. I grew up in a northern town, Blackpool, festering away until punk rock saved my life. I went on to form the loudest band ever, the Membranes, write for the music press where I made up the word ‘Britpop’ and was the first person to interview Nirvana and the Stone Roses amongst others.

These days I run the influential music blog (Louder Than War), appear on TV, sing in cult punk rock band, Goldblade, and tour the world. I write best selling books about music like the Stone Roses biog and an oral history of punk rock but I’m more interested in what everyone else is doing and that’s why I love events like these.

The Fringe is not just a way to engage local talent; it’s also an important thread under the Harrogate International Festivals’ umbrella of arts programmes and events. This year, the Fringe also welcomes a unique venue for audiences to access upcoming artists and musicians on an unrivalled platform: the legendary Spiegeltent.

Step into the magical mirrored tent – and throw yourself into some new experiences and I will see you there…

Fringe Crawl DaySun 26 May | Midday – 4am

Various Venues

Now in its 4th year the Fringe Crawl has always traditionally been the closing event for all of the Fringe’s activities, clocking in at the height of summer. However this year, because we’re not convinced such a thing as “summer” actually exists anymore, we’ve brought the day forward and are using it to launch the whole diverse affair that is “Fringe”!

Taking over venues across Harrogate for the Bank holiday Sunday, a range of DJ’s, Promoters, Bands & Beer-establishments serve up 16 hours of Rhythmic Debauchery and Entertainment Eclectica! Check out Monteys rock Café, Rehab and the Viper Rooms for a day and night of live acts and dancing til dawn.

Rehab plays host to a joint showcase from underground DIY punk promoters the NYHC and Harrogate’s longest running club event of any kind Bottom of the Bottle. Headlining will be The FALLEN and Sworn Amongst plus a swathe of Hard rock, Punk & Metal bands and Dj Trev! This is also the official after party for all the day’s events - keeping the party going until 4am! Ear Plugs, a smiling face and a strong constitution are all you need to enjoy a Bank holiday bonanza!

Jenkins - The Peacemakers

& Rutter - Requiem.Sat 8 June | 7.30 pm - 10 pm

Royal Hall, Harrogate

HCS are joined by Hannah Kerr, Soprano and the Amici Ensemble for a concert featuring a brand new choral work composed by Karl Jenkins, The Peacemakers, and John Rutter’s Requiem - a firm favourite the world over. The Peacemakers was first performed in early 2012 and features texts from some of the greatest peacemakers throughout history including: Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Anne Frank and Mother Teresa, as well as words from the Bible and the Quran. Rutter’s Requiem has some dark moments but is unmistakably optimistic in its message of hope and comfort. It is not surprising that after the tragic events of 9/11 this setting of the Requiem became the preferred choice of music at the many memorial services which followed across the USA.
