Doug Burnham – The Aesthetics of WineMany of us enjoy a glass of wine, on its own or with a meal, but we don’t tend to give our enjoyment a lot of thought. WHY do we enjoy wine? There are the obvious reasons: the alcohol content, or the pleasurable and cleansing sensations of fruits and acids. Is there something more to be said, for example a relationship between how wine is experienced and the kinds of experiences we get from art? We will address these questions, accompanied of course by a glass of wine!

TONY CRAIG - ON THE FRINGES OF POLITICSBritish counter-intelligence and extremist politic groups in interwar Britain.This lecture on the interwar activities of MI5 looks at their expansion into the investigation of extreme left wing and right wing political groups prior to the World War Two. It uses material now released by the National Archives to shed light upon the activities of these groups before looking critically at what we now know British intelligence missed.

David Noble: A Cabinet of CuriositiesSome Thoughts on the Beguiling Pleasures of Photographic Pictures We are surrounded by

photographic pictures. The capacity to optically make visual our world intrigues, excites, describes

and perhaps at times makes us anxious. Pictures appear like puzzles that require or demand, they

yield meaning, with meaning we know something and master uncertainty. However like particular

forms of poetry particular photographs can resist explanation. This talk wonders why that might be by considering the strange Surrealist case of the

Mexican Jumping Bean.luxuries?

JOHN HOLDEN: Passion and Pain; Life and Football
