TITANIUM LUNCH It was Mr B’s choice for lunch
this week. He chose to take students
Claire Dowe, Landon Mortimer and Cruize Moore-Duff to the
Art Gallery. They all enjoyed their new dining experience and we are sure more students will now be choosing to
go there also.

Dear Parents,
Pertussis (whooping cough) at Gunnedah South Public School
A child who a ends our school has been diagnosed with pertussis (whooping cough). As your children’s immunisa on is up to date, no other interven on is required. I am wri ng to provide advice and to ask that you watch out for the symptoms of pertussis in you/your child over the next two weeks.
What is pertussis? Pertussis is an infec on of the throat that can cause bouts of coughing, and some mes breathing difficul es and vomi ng. It can be a very serious infec on in small children. The illness can last for many weeks. It usually starts with a snuffle or a cold.
What should people who develop pertussis symptoms do? If your child develops symptoms, please take your child and this le er to your local doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor can advise whether pertussis is likely and arrange for early treatment if needed. Trea ng people who have pertussis with an bio cs can stop the infec on spreading, but is more effec ve if started early.
To help prevent this infec on spreading, people who have been diagnosed with pertussis should not a end childcare un l they have completed the first 5 days of a course of the recommended an bio cs.
If an bio cs cannot be taken, then they must stay away for 3 weeks a er onset of the cough.
How is it prevented? Vaccina on is the most important way of reducing pertussis in our community. It is important to double check that your child is fully up to date with his or her immunisa ons against pertussis. Children born from October 1, 2014 will now receive a booster at 18 months.
Children can receive their pre‐school vaccina ons from 4 years of age. If in doubt, please ask your doctor to check.
While the pertussis vaccina on greatly reduces the risk of disease, there is s ll a chance your child could get pertussis even if they have been fully vaccinated.
An bio cs are not required and we do not recommend that children are excluded if they remain well.
Need more informa on? For more informa on, please see the Pertussis Fact sheet from the website below

Dear Parents and Community Members,
This week has been an extraordinary week for students in Years 5 who are in Canberra, and Year 6 students who are in Sydney. Reports and photos from both excursions clearly show our students are enjoying the learning experiences and having a great deal of fun. I look forward to a full report in our next newsle er.
Honouring their Spirit – Remembrance Day 2018
Remembrance Day has a special significance in 2018. Sunday, 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armis ce which ended the First World War (1914–18).
One hundred years ago, on 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent a er four years of con nuous warfare. With their armies retrea ng and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armis ce, bringing to an end the First World War.
In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died including 130 of Gunnedah’s young men, who bravely marched away to war never to return. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the postwar decades.
Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. I encourage you wherever you are to take a moment at 11am on Sunday.
Remembrance Day 2018
Community Service
With the significance of Remembrance Day on Sunday, our School Captains will represent the school and lay a wreath as part of the service which commences at 10:45am at the Cenotaph. We encourage all students and families to come along and stand with our school captains. We will meet near the Post Office corner and move to the Cenotaph at 10:40 am.
School Service
On Monday, we will hold a short Remembrance Day service in our school hall. This will commence at 10:50am and be conclude by 11:10am. Recess me will be late on this day. As always, parents and community members are welcome to join us on this occasion.

Year 5 – Captain and Leadership Speeches
Last term Year 5 students and I spoke about how our 2019 elec ons would run this term. As the school principal, my expecta ons and our school community expecta ons for all school leaders is excep onally high and we require students who are excep onal role models for peers for these posi ons.
We have developed some interes ng ground rules together:
1. Any student who has a red slip or is suspended from 12th September onwards would be ineligible to stand for a posi on. From 2019, this will be the whole of year for Year 5 students.
2. There will be two rounds of vo ng. a. Round 1 will be Year 5 and Staff only – this will be on 16th of November. The speeches are then followed by vo ng which commences at 11:30am. This allows for Year 5 students to successfully nominate 10 boys and 10 girls for the K‐5 students who are eligible to vote in Round 2.
b. Round 2 – Speeches will be held on 4th December while Year 6 are on High School Transi on. The speeches are then followed by vo ng which commences at 11:30am. The outcome of the elec ons will then be announced on Presenta on day.
3. Leadership speeches will occur in the School Hall and Year 5 parents and families are invited to a end if they would like.
4. No props can be used as part of the speeches.
5. Students who are elected to the leadership team along with their parents/carers will be expected to sign a Captain Code of Conduct which outlines expecta ons of our school leaders at the beginning of 2019.
The ‘S Factor’ Grand Final

Finally, I am looking forward to another great week at South, full of fantas c student achievement and entertainment on Friday at the ‘S Factor’

NRL Skills Development Clinic During week two, stage two and three students par cipated in an NRL Skills Development Clinic ran by Luke and Bree from the NRL Development Team. Students were given the opportunity to develop their ball skills including the correct catching and passing techniques. Students were also given the chance to play games that develop their confidence. The progress students made in
such a short space of me was impressive.
Mrs Mitchell
Congratulations to our students who participated in the Athletic State Finals.
Bella Sawyer finished equal 4th in her high jump event, and our junior boys relay team, Tyler Scott, Tyrone Winsor, Liam Duff and Harry Ryman finished 31st in the state and

FREEPARENTEVENING
With
LUKEKENNEDY
20TH NOVEMBER 6pm at the High School
Come along and take the opportunity to hear one of Sydney’s best mo va onal speakers
LUKE KENNEDY
────
On the outside he looked strong and confident, on the
inside his thoughts would come to haunt him. He was
incredibly scared, depressed, anxious, and
awkward in social situations. Luke always worried what other people thought about
him which led to him committing some harsh acts
and missing out on many positive opportunities.
────
He opens up the audience’s eyes, and mind, to their ego – to the labels that we battle to live up to, and relates his story back to some of the
masks the audience would be wearing. He then shows
how these labels, and worrying what other
people think, is ruining our relationships, following
through on ideas (it could be as simple as not making
those crucial sales calls, or not putting your hand up in
class), happiness, and success in every area of life. Becoming aware of ones ego
and labels, is the first step towards releasing it.....
