Welcome Address

Dear Delegate, Welcome to the sixth annual PhD to Consulting Conference. First, we would like to congratulate you on being selected, as we received hundreds of outstanding applications. A doctorate nurtures quality like exceptional problem-solving skills, intellectual curiosity and a drive to achieve outstanding results. Commercial organisations and consulting firms are realising the potential of PhDs, valuing their fresh and thoughtful approach in delivering business insights. However, many high calibre researchers are unaware of this opportunity, and find it difficult to locate appropriate resources and guidance to realise a transition from academia to consulting. The PtC Conference was first held in 2012 and has evolved markedly since its first instalment. From just a handful of companies and fewer than 70 attendees, it has grown to a dozen companies and more than 170 delegates. The focus of the conference has stayed the same: to provide a platform for discussion and networking to researchers and professionals from consulting firms. We are very proud to welcome many excellent speakers from internationally renowned companies, many of which have made the transition from PhD graduates to consultants themselves. You will have the opportunity to learn about specific companies, the recruitment process, how to apply skills gained in your PhD to consulting and to make lasting connections with other attendees and the company representatives. We would like to use this opportunity to express our gratitude to our sponsors, OC&C, Navigant and Cranmore for making this event possible. Furthermore, we would like to thank all speakers and other company representatives for making the time to come here today. We hope that you will enjoy the PtC Conference 2017 and that you will be able to leverage the opportunities offered today to build a fruitful career.

Speaker:

Alex Geddes pursued a PhD in biomolecular science, after completing an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry. During this time, he gained experience in a multitude of lab techniques encompassing traditional cell biology and biophysical approaches. Alongside academic work, Alex also used this time to explore other interests not directly related to his PhD research. This consisted of working within the universities’ patent office to support the development of spinout companies and also volunteering part time for a healthcare focused R&D consulting firm. Whilst enjoying the time spent working in a lab environment, following completion of his PhD he opted to explore a growing interest in the

commercialization of academic research and sought work in a business strategy consultancy with expertise in the life science sector. After taking up an associate consultant position with QuintilesIMS, Alex has since worked on projects supporting clients from across the globe, at all stages of the pharmaceutical development pipeline. This has involved assisting with R&D strategy and identifying commercially viable opportunities during the preclinical phase of drug development, through to supporting market access strategies for novel therapies and devising approaches to mitigate against revenue loss in the advent of patent expiration for blockbuster drugs.
