  2. 2. French is a Romance Language meaning it is a derivative of Latin the language of Rome. By the Early Modern Period (1400-1600) Latin was only spoken and written for administrative purposes. The Country was divide into two Languages with the North speaking Oil and the South Occitan.

    Oil Language is formed of many other languages and dialects of Northern France.

    Occitan is spoken in the southern region of France as well as in smaller regions of Italy, Spain, and Monaco. In Catalonia it is still the official language

    In the 1600, the French language was standardized, and in 1539 King Francis Imade it the language of civic law under the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterets. It became an effective to in unifying the country.
