A. INPARFAITIts a tense expressing a certain duration or repeated action in the past which beginning and end was

not known . The imperfect ( l'imparfait) expresses or describes continued, repeated, habitual actions

or incomplete actions, situations, or events in the past. The imperfect describes what was going on at

an indefinite time in the past or what used to happen. The imperfect can be translated by wouldwhen it implies used to. The imperfect is a simple tense that does not require a helping verb.

So the imparfait translate :

Used to : when i was young i used to visit my .. Was verb + ing : i was doing He had just arrived

To finish : finir

The we form at the present tense is we finish : nous finissons . You drop the end ons and keep

the first part finiss

You add the imperfect ending:

Je finissais Tu finissais Il finissait Nous finissions Vous finissiez Ils finissaient

D. Pronoun en

The French adverbial pronoun en is so tiny that one might think its role in a sentence is not very

important, but in fact quite the opposite is true. It is extremely important in French. En replaces

the partitive article + noun or de + indefinite article + noun. It is equivalent to "some," "any," or "one"

in English. n a sentence with a modifier, such as an adverb of quantity or a number, plus noun, en

replaces the noun and the modifier or number is placed at the end of the sentence. Note that "of it" and

"of them" are usually optional in English, but en is required in French.

1. As-tu du pain ? Oui, j'en ai.2. Il a envie d'une pomme. Il en a envie.3.

Je n'ai pas besoin d'un aide. Je n'en ai pas besoin.
