If you asked me to tell you my #1 tip for freelance writers, I'd probably say this:"Define a narrow niche, and market yourself as an expert in that niche."

Why?

Because high-paying clients want to work with experts — not generalists. So,it's easy to understand how defining a niche can help you win better work.

If you're not sure what to pick as your niche, keep reading. I've got somesuggestions for you AND some tips on how to break into your niche of choice!

Tips for breaking into a profitable niche fast1. If you're a newbie, write samples that will impress your ideal clients.I'll rarely suggest that you write for free, but if you're a newbie looking to breakinto a niche, this is one of the best ways to do it.

Make sure your samples help your clients realize that you're the best writer forthem. For example, if you want to write B2B blog posts about marketing, writea badass B2B blog post about marketing.

You could even try to get your post published as a guest post on a well-knownmarketing blog rather than simply putting it in your portfolio! That wouldimmediately establish you as an expert and make clients more likely to want towork with you.

2. If you've been writing for a while, try using your best current samples first.I was able to break into writing blog posts about real estate because of mywriting style and my interest in learning about real estate. I simply sent a clientan in-depth blog post I had published on ProBlogger and explained that I couldwrite blog posts about real estate in a similar style.

Since ProBlogger is a well-known site, I was able to use my sample there toestablish my writing expertise and get the client to give me a chance. And guesswhat? It worked out great, and I still have that client today!

3. Start publishing posts on LinkedIn (and elsewhere) that are designed tomake your target audience want to work with you. When you define a niche, you also define your target audience. For example, when I specialized in writing website copy for IT service providers, my targetaudience was IT service providers.

To draw them in, I wrote a post called "The ABCs of Content Marketing for ITService Providers" and published it on LinkedIn. I also wrote one called "ITService Providers: Are Your Website Mistakes Costing You Leads?"

You can see how those blog post titles targeted my audience while positioningme an expert writer in their industry.

So, think about your audience and the services you're offering them. You canuse that information to come up with blog posts that drive traffic to your siteand help you win work in your desired niche!

4. Network with other writers in your desired niche.Sometimes, I get overwhelmed and need to outsource some of my writingtasks. And I know I'm not the only one!

So, network with writers in your desired niche by connecting with them onsocial media sites like LinkedIn and Twitter. Then, you can start buildingrelationships with them by sharing their posts or interacting with them. Youcould even set up a quick Skype call to see if there's any way you can help eachother out!

And BOOM — just like that, you've made a connection. As long as they knowyour niche, you'll be one of the first writers they reach out to when they needto outsource.

5. Start pitching guest posts like crazy. But not just any ol' guest post. You need to specifically guest post on a site that'spopular with your target audience.

For example, if you want to write about property management, you shouldpitch sites that property managers read regularly (like Landlordology)!

If you can get a solid sample published on a site that your target clients view ascredible and well-known in their industry, your writing services willimmediately seem much more valuable in their eyes — even if you don't havetons of prior experience!

That's all there is to it!

One final tip: Don't let fear hold you back from going after the niche you want.I now specialize in several niches I had zero knowledge of when I started out —I just put myself out there and started learning quickly.

If I can do that, then you can too!

Now, get out there and make shit happen. :)
