1. Take the first strip from your jelly rolls and cut off 12-18 inches. This will stop the strips being too lined up when sewn together.

2. Sew the strips together, laying one face up and another face down perpendicularly, sewing across at a 45° angle.

3. Once you have sewn all the strips, cut the threads and clip the corners, leaving a quarter inch seam where the strips join.

4. Find the last strip and place it right sides together over the first. Sew down the side of the new strip you’re making with a quarter inch seam allowance.

5. At the end, cut your work in half along the fold and open out. You should have two rows joined by a centre seam.

6. Lay the end two strips over the first two, right sides together, and sew down the side with a quarter inch seam allowance.

7. When you have finished this row, cut along the fold and open out the strips. You should see four rows joined by centre seams.

8. Repeat the above steps, and once you get to the end of the row, cut along the fold and open it out. Then fold the joined strips over and sew down the side. Once you are happy with the size of your quilt top, you can assemble the quilt.

9. Lay out the backing fabric, making sure there are no creases. Lay the wadding on top and then the quilt top.

10. Cut the fabric and wadding to size using the quilt top as a template. Make the wadding and backing fabric a couple of inches larger that the quilt top to help when assembling the layers.

11. Use safety pins or adhesive spray to sandwich your quilt, smoothing as you go.

12. Trim the edges so they are flush.

13. Position your needle so that it goes into the seam between the strips and sew down the row. This will result in a line of stitching that is hidden in the join (“stitching in the ditch”).Tip: If you have a walking or even feed foot, use it now.

14. Repeat every few rows until the bottom. You can do this for each row if you wish.

15. To make the binding, decide how much of a border you want and cut out strips of fabric double the size (e.g. for a 2 inch border, cut a 4 inch wide strip).

16. Measure your binding by pinning the strips together, end to end and laying them around the edge of the quilt until you have enough to go all the way round with a few inches overlap.

17. Join together the same way as the jelly roll strips; lay one face up and another perpendicularly face down and sew at a 45° angle.

18. Once finished, you will have one long strip of fabric. Fold and press the long edges over approximately a quarter of an inch along the length of the strip, hiding the raw edges of the fabric.

19. Fold the strip in half along its length and over the edge of the quilt. Pin into position.

20. Sew close to the edge where the binding meets the quilt, making sure both are caught by the stitching.
