It’s time... It’s time...

Always observe your ferret’s poop to know what is normal for him/her. This will help you catch any problems that may arise. Here are some examples of what certain types of poop could potentially mean.

Brown, smooth consistency, not too thin, not runny poop.

food moving through too fast. If green could potentially mean E.C.E virus, a sudden change in diet or lymphoma etc.

Diarrhoea –

Bloody poop - very bad sign usually from rectum or large bowel. Could be caused by a haemorrhage. Best to take ferret to the vet.

Grainy poop -could be a sign of body not digesting foods properly eg. fats. Can also be a sign of disease or a ferret in need of a change in diet. Monitor and consult a vet if you’re worried.

Black and tarry poop -Usually not a good sign as could be caused by gastric ulcers. However, this can also normally occur after a ferret has eaten raw meat.

Examples of food that I should eat include:

High quality meat based ferret kibble

Whole Mice, Rats, Chicks, Rabbits, etc. “That’s NOT food, that’s what MY food EATS! For the last time...

I AM NOT A RODENT! I EAT RODENTS!!!”

As a ferret I am an obligate carnivore which means my body is designed to digest meat only! I can’t physically produce the digestive enzymes necessary to digest vegies or fruit. Therefore, these could potentially cause an intestinal blockage.

Dental check up with routine vet check twice a year

Ferret bathing a few times in a year – the more you bath

the more fuzzy stinks!

Feeding your ferret whole raw foods such as mice, rats or chicks can help keep your ferret’s teeth clean - the bones act as a natural

toothbrush.

Allow your ferret to run around and exercise for at

least 2-4hrs a day to keep it fit, healthy and happy.

There are a lot of areas around the world where people believe ferrets to be wild animals. They believe that if they were to escape they would take out the native fauna. This is a large misconception as ferrets are completely domestic

animals just like your average cat, dog or cow.
