From grassland to meadow - A nature recovery success storyNottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and staff from British Gypsum have been collaborating for many years but work over the past 12 months will really support nature’s recovery thanks to the transformation of a barren grassland area in to a wildflower meadow adjacent to the charity’s Bunny Old Wood.

A staggering 97% of species rich meadows have been lost since 1930s and last year, British Gypsum joined Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust in the fight to restore the UK’s dwindling wildflower habitat. The company has worked with the Trust to transform a field next to Bunny Old Wood, close to British Gypsum’s head office at East Leake. The creation of the 3.3-acre wildflower meadow is an exciting contribution to the establishment of a Nature Recovery Network for Nottinghamshire, by allowing the area to regenerate and attract wildflower species. A Nature Recovery Network is a connected system of places important for wild plants and animals.

Meadows are a brilliant habitat, supporting eight times more wildlife than mown grass. Rich in wildflowers, it will attract pollinators and other insects and act as a natural buffer to protect the ancient woodland habitat of Bunny Old Wood. It will also provide food for birds and amphibians residing in the wood such as the natural hedges the British Gypsum Distribution Team helped to build – learning the ancient skill of hedge laying in the process. The wildflower seeds will also be a beneficial food source for the small mammals such as mice and voles that reside in the hedges and woodland. The Trust and British Gypsum are hopeful for a fruitful 2020 spring and summer season.

Senior estates and minerals planner Jennifer Saunders stated, “The site is reaping the benefits and we were really pleased to see there were lots of species appearing already in our meadow at Bunny Wood last year– some of which may have been lying dormant for up to 20 years! These include meadow vetchling, agrimone, ox-eye daisies and common spotted orchids. Much more than just pretty flowers, meadows are unrivalled havens

for wildlife, and we look forward to seeing what appears this year too as the species develop and we hope they can establish further afield in the network in the future.”

Ruth Grice of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust said: “We need to create a Nature Recovery Network that extends into every part of our towns, cities and countryside, bringing wildlife and the benefits of a healthy natural world into every part of life. Letting flowers bloom along road verges, installing green roofs across city skylines, planting more street trees to give people shady walks in the summer and

encouraging whole communities to garden for wild plants and animals can all play a part.”

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and British Gypsum have plans for further engagement in 2020 to enhance habitat restoration at Bunny Old Wood and to inspire others to do the same.

06 NEWS

Meadow Park has seen several instances of flooding over the autumn/winter months. We expect the park to be flooded every now and then as it is on the flood plain.

What we do not expect, or like, is the fact that the water flooding into the park is polluted. For several weeks earlier this year there was overflow from the holding storm tanks in the centre of the village. From the bridge over Gotham Road, by the fire station, you could see the water flowing into the brook. Samples have been taken and pollution has been recorded. Officially we have been told that the area should be alright if debris (some unpleasant) is picked up and the land is left for three weeks after each flood incident. This has obviously impacted on Forest School and the children are not able to use the park for

several weeks. The log circle the children sit on to eat their lunch and plan their work was uprooted and moved by the force of the water, and the posts supporting the tarpaulin rain shelter needed some attention.

We are in contact with Severn Trent, the Environment Agency and other bodies trying to improve the situation regarding the overflow from the storm tanks in the centre of the village. Representatives from Severn Trent and the Environment Agency have come to evaluate the situation. As I write this they are thinking of possible solutions. The cheap and immediately effective way of dealing with the problem would be to build the storm tanks taller so that they hold back more of the polluted water mixed with rain water. Other solutions considered involve a lot of digging

up of roads etc. There is a further problem regarding the treatment works at West Leake in that they can only deal with so much volume.

The committee feels it is essential that residents know when the park is being polluted and is seeking help from the relevant authorities regarding the wording on any signage and how to get permission to set up temporary signs in the centre of the village. A number of agencies need to be involved here from the Highways Authority (signs on roads) to the Environment Agency (regarding levels of pollution) and the different councils as well (County/Borough/Parish).

A number of trees have been planted in the park over the last few months (15 rowan and one ash in February) RBC provided some (planted in Bateman Field near the railway embankment) and others have been planted on field boundaries, particularly on the boundary along Bateman Road. On March 14th around 17 trees were planted in the park, some wild cherry on the Bateman Road boundary and a couple of oaks in Gibson Field. The willows were also pollarded with some of the thicker shoots used to extend the tunnel sculpture near the Bateman Road entrance.

In planting trees our aim is to maintain the traditional open fields and only plant trees on margins/

boundaries. It is an underreported fact that grassland captures carbon and if it is not ploughed too deeply will retain that carbon. Planting trees is one aspect of carbon capture, grassland also plays a part in the overall picture.

Lastly, we were given the chippings from two mature trees that had to be cut down in another part of the village and these were put down on non-limestone pathways to keep them as free of mud as possible.

To find out more visit the village website (www.east-leake.co.uk) and look under ‘organisations’. Pick up an application form from Mel’s shop or the parish Office. We also have a Facebook page.

Membership per year costs £3 for an individual or £5 for a household.

08 The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.comGARDENING

Easter is on the horizon and longer days herald the start of spring. As the sun warms the soil, spring bulbs such as daffodils, narcissi, iris and even early tulips will be opening up to brighten the garden.

Beds and Borders Nothing is more welcome in the spring garden than the bright clean yellow colours of miniature daffodils and the multi-coloured displays from modern hyacinths.

To ensure your display looks good for the longest time, pick off all the faded flower heads as the petals wilt, so the plant doesn’t spend all its energy creating seed heads. While these bulbs are in leaf you should feed them so they can regenerate new flower buds deep inside the bulbs.

Lawncare It really must be spring, you can now hear the sounds of mowers and smell one of our favourites, the scent of new cut grass. For a great summer lawn cut your grass frequently, but not too short. A weekly trim now, gradually reducing the height of cut

in April, so that it gets down to its minimum length of 2-3cm.

Get your lawn into shape and apply a spring lawn feed. Choose one that will feed the grass with the added benefit of controlling moss and killing weeds. Building a thick, green lawn with strong roots helps protect your lawn against heat, drought and other stresses.

Spring is a great time to rejuvenate your lawn by over seeding, professional groundsman do this all year to even up colour and consistency of grass types in your lawn. You will be the envy of the neighbourhood!

Tips for a great looking lawn this summer: • Cut regular every 7 – 14 days is best this time of year • Apply a Feed to encourage healthy growth and replace lost nutrients • Apply a moss control, leave for 10-14 days then lightly raked out.

Does all this sound hard work? we already service many customers in your location, our service is often

cheaper than doing it yourself, why not contact us for a free quotation.

Grow your Own April is a busy month, because seeds of most crops can be sown now. Hardy crops can be sown directly into the soil of your veg patch, while tender ones need to start their life indoors on a windowsill.

You don’t need an allotment, you can grow vegetables in raised beds, wooden frames and wicker baskets or perhaps choose a vegetable planter, well worth the extra money for a space on the patio.

Patio Surface After cold wet winter, shaded areas of paved patios may be covered with a slimy green mould, moss and algae. It is not only unsightly, but also very slippery. If you need help

creating a clean weed free patio to enjoy your summer garden, why not give us a call.

At Greener Gardens it is clear we have a social responsibility and we want to take a pro active part in dealing with the COVID-19 / Corona Virus, we have amended our working practices to ensure that along with our staff both our new and current customers remain safe.

Here at G&J Landscapes we pride ourselves on ‘Creating your perfect space’.

Whether it’s just a small area of your garden, or a complete garden makeover, sometimes some customers find it very difficult to visualise the new space. It can be tricky to see through the existing area as it looks now and imagine its potential.

Paul and Joan from Radcliffe on Trent (a previous customer from last year) had this exact problem.

They had lived with their garden for many years and had trouble visualising the end results of their complete garden makeover before the work had started. The old garden was tired and in desperate need for a fresh new look. With

Paul I designed a new look for the outdoor space and was able to easily show him how the finished project would look.

Sarah, who also works at G&J Landscapes HQ, drew up a CAD design so that Paul and his wife Joan were able to have a clearer understanding of the finished design.

At G&J, we can use your ideas and convert them into a detailed, digital design, bringing imaginative ideas to a visual reality. This is a service we offer for not only the customer but also for myself and my team to use as a to-scale guide when working each individual project.

A Harry Carlton School Veterans Facebook group has provided an unexpected phenomenon as locals and ex pupils of the former school from around the world have flocked to the page in their droves.

Just over one month ago, former Harry Carlton Comprehensive school pupil, Mark Lindsay, came up with an idea to set up a Facebook group whereby ex pupils could reacquaint themselves with one another and share their memories. Nothing could have prepared him for the tidal wave of interest that followed. Speaking to East Leake Local News, Mark said: “I honestly thought that my page may attract somewhere in the region of 200 people, but at last count we had just over 2300 members. It’s a truly astonishing number to be achieved in little over a month”

What started as a few people

sharing stories and memories, has blossomed into something of an obsession for many people with countless hours being lost reading through the posts and crawling around in lofts for old photographs and artefacts from the former school. Some astonishing recollections and pictures have been posted, including a remarkable hand drawn plan of the school all done from memory alone.

In a time when a little light relief from current world events is a welcome distraction, old Harry Carlton school memories are providing the perfect tonic.

Spring is here and it would be fantastic if keeping a lawn in peak condition was as simple as throwing a handful of fertiliser on it every 2/3 months but unfortunately this is not always the case.

A lot of the lawns in this area are situated on a heavy clay soil base and this means that soil compaction can be a big issue. Grass can become very stressed on compact soil as moisture and nutrients will find great difficulty getting into the root zone especially in dry conditions. Moss and weeds however love compact soil and moss especially will start to out-compete the healthy grass smothering and eventually taking it over and at this point it is in great danger of being lost.

The only way the lawn will recover is by what we call mechanical work which is aeration and scarification. The way Prograss reduce the compaction of the soil is to use a process called hollow tine aeration (pictured here) which is done by heavy duty commercial machines

that physically extract thousands of cores from the lawn. This breaks up the soil surface so that when we get rainfall or if fertiliser is applied this will go straight to where it should do which is the root zone of the lawn. The root zone will then strengthen and deepen increasing

the moisture and nutrient storage capacity. Ask any horticulturalist, greenkeeper or groundsman and they will agree that aeration is almost like a magic wand which will not only hugely improve the condition of the lawn but also the drainage.

Scarification is done by heavy duty commercial motorised rakes which will in effect extract all that we don’t want in the lawn which is moss and thatch (dead grass) but leaving in the healthy grass giving it much more room to green, thicken and strengthen. This process also exposes the soil surface which is vital if we are going to take the lawn forward. Seed germinates in contact with soil so if overseeding afterwards is to be successful then the soil surface needs to be accessible.

Prograss mainly do the mechanical work in Spring and Autumn to avoid disruption to the lawn in the Summer season so now is the perfect time to give them a ring for a free, no obligation lawn health check and quote and get your lawn into perfect shape for the Summer.

After one of the mildest wettest Winters on record you may have noticed that moss has appeared in force on the many different external surfaces and places surrounding your property.

Drives, patios, paths, slabs, walls and roofs have all been hit hard by a covering of moss and in the cases of any surfaces we walk on these can become very dangerous potentially resulting in serious injury from slipping and falling.

Now may be a good time to get Projet to come and do a free, no obligation quotation on professionally cleaning these areas to not only make them safe but to also give them a completely new look by cosmetically making these surfaces totally different and clean.

Tarmac Drives

Depending on the condition of the Drive we do not always recommend pressure washing tarmac as it can damage the surface so we usually use our heavy duty commercial moss brush (pictured here before

and after) and you can see that it removes the moss without damaging the tarmac. We would then recommend the surface is sprayed with a biocide to control any remaining moss plus also complete the clean. This process also slows down the recurrence of any moss reappearing.

Other Drives, patios, paths, walls and slabs

These can be cleaned using our commercial pressure washer that is built into the van which has variable power and different attachments to provide the optimum clean for each different surface and situation. Other services such as weed control, sanding, pointing, sealing and again biocide sprays can be discussed if required.

Roofs, gutters, facias, conservatories etc

Projet also have huge experience in cleaning all external surfaces including the ones above. It is amazing how different a property can look if all the moss is scraped

off the roof and then cleaned professionally. The same with conservatories, car ports, facias etc. We can even clean down garden furniture to make it look brand new again.

If you would like more details about what we do including before and after shots of jobs we have done previously these can be seen on our brand new website here: www.projetltd.co.uk

Projet are the number one external property cleaning service in Nottinghamshire combining huge experience and the best commercial equipment.

If you would like to have a free, no obligation inspection and quote on any of the above services please give us a call on 01949 833525 or visit our new website available at www.projetltd.co.uk.

After 20 years of consideration and development, East Leake writer, Chris Garbett, has finally brought together and published his collection of fables called How it Came to Pass.

This book of fables is a fascinating series of short stories examining creation and the development

of species, focusing on mankind through the humanisation of the female as well as looking at other species, including fish.

This is a delightful, thought-provoking and, above all, entertaining book. Chris has a unique writer’s voice and his wry humour, accurate observation combined with his skilful writing to create a whole series of new worlds in this captivating collection of stories.

Chris belongs to the East Leake Writers’ Group, affectionately known as the Leakey Pens. His short stories have been published singly across the world. One of his pieces became a set text for English Literature in Canada.

He is a chartered surveyor and is the author of many professional publications. He is currently collaborating to create a virtual writers’ community to keep writers in touch with each other during the Corona Virus epidemic.

A second collection, looking at

artificial intelligence, is starting to take shape, along with a series of poems specifically written for the forthcoming East Leake Cultural Festival.

Chris’ book is available on Amazon. Plans for its public launch event have been postponed due to current events. Updates can be found at the East Leake Writers Club Facebook.
