Frederic Remington was fascinated with the Old West and loved the heroic and adventurous lifestyles of the cowboys and soldiers he met there. His depictions of the west captured the imagination of eastern audiences and he became well respected for the detail and accuracy of his work.

Though he made many trips out West, he created his paintings and sculptures in his New York studio. He would bring props back to his studio to recreate the images he saw on his travels. Though he was an Easterner, many people believed he was from the west because of his accurate depictions.

Though he was a very prolific painter, Remington may be best know for his sculptures. He liked the way the sculpture allowed his subjects to be viewed from every angle. He completed 22 sculptures in his lifetime.

Remington loved horses. He had barn doors installed on his studio so he could bring horses inside to use as models. Some of his most famous paintings are those that depict horses running.
