308 IRISH JOURNAL OF MEDICAL SCIENCE in the medical faculties in Ireland as is done elsewhere, and we in the Central Statistics Office try to help out so that the best use may be made of the resources available in the country. What statisticians have to say in relation to the results presented to them is often very negative, and it does not make them very popular with the people who actually carry out the investigation. IN MEMORIAM FRANCIS STEPHEN KEVIN BOURKE. (Born 14th July, 1895, died 13th June, 1959.) It is always difficult to realise at first the full extent of the loss sustained by the death of an old and valued friend. This is a difficulty which will be experienced by very many with the passing of Dr. F. S. Bourke. A Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ireland (1923) he devoted himself from an early date to the scientific side of medical practice, becoming Pathologist to Dr. Steevens' and the Rotunda Hospitals, and later Director of the Special Treatment Centre in the first-named. Apart from his professional activities he was a man of many interests. As an Irish bibliographer he occupies a high place and his long association with his friend and colleague, the late Dr. T. P. C. Kirkpatrick, was of great value to both. His contributions to bibliographical and biographical literature earned for him Membership of the Royal Irish Academy. Dr. Bourke was a Council member of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland and at meetings, especially those of the Medical History Section, his extensive knowledge was always available and greatly appreciated. The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland is deep in his debt. Not only was he, over the years, an open-handed donor, but his services were freely given in all matters relating to the Kirkpatrick Bequest to the College Library. Until his Iast illness began he had devoted much of his time to preparing that collection for systematic cataloguing. I know it was a source of much satisfaction to him when, in 1955, the College elected him an Honorary Fellow. He will be remembered for many things and among them his remarkable knowledge of the by-ways of literature and history---especia!ly Irish history ; his generosity in sharing this knowledge with every genuine enquirer and his abiding love for his own countryside, particularly Co. Wicklow. No appreciation of our old friend would be complete without reference to his courage in his last illness. In very truth there was here " no weakness, no contempt, Dispraise or blame ; nothing but well and fair." CHARLES DICKSON.
