Fractional Blocks

I am learning to use patterns to find fractions of shapes and sets.

2

1Half of a square.

4

1Half of a half a square.

Page 2: Fractional Blocks I am learning to use patterns to find fractions of shapes and sets. Half of a square. Half of a half a square

Below are twelve tiles. One quarter of these must be coloured red. How many tiles must be coloured red?

We know that one quarter is half of a half so start by imagining this shape cut in half.

Now imagine one of thee shapes cut in half again.

We have now found half of one half or one quarter of the tiles.

4

1of 12 = ?

4

1of 12 = 3

Page 3: Fractional Blocks I am learning to use patterns to find fractions of shapes and sets. Half of a square. Half of a half a square

Below are twenty tiles. Two tenths of these must be coloured red. How many tiles must be coloured red?

Imagine how these tiles could be split into tenths.

We know there are 2 blocks in each tenth. So how many blocks are there in 2 tenths?

10

2of 20 = ?

10

2of 20 = 4

Use your division facts to check your answer.(20 ÷ 10 = 2)

The tiles to the left are still split into tenths.

You can see that there are four blocks in one fifth.

5

1of 20 = 4

Use your division facts to check your answer.

(20 ÷ 5 = 4)

Let’s use our last question to help us work out what of 20 is. 5

1

Think about what we could do to split these tiles into fifths, not tenths.

Page 5: Fractional Blocks I am learning to use patterns to find fractions of shapes and sets. Half of a square. Half of a half a square

Imagine the tiling pattern below split into thirds.

of the tiling below must be shaded red. How many tiles is that?3

2

Use your division facts to check your answer.

(18 ÷ 3 = 6)

You can see that there are 6 tiles in each third.

So two thirds must be twice as much (2 X 6 = 12).

3

2of 18 = 12

Now try these questions on your own.

1) of 15 = ?

2) of 16 = ?

3) of 30 = ?

4) of 25 = ?

5) of 32 = ?
