In this Year of Faith - Why I am Catholic

I am a cradle catholic, born to strict Catholic parents and baptised as a baby.

This was pre-Vatican II when the mass was in Latin, with the priest having his back to

the congregation. The message that I received from my parents, that was reinforced

at a convent school, was of an awful and judgemental God. I can remember counting

my sins on my fingers lest I forgot any prior to confession. No wonder then, that I

went to church. I had to. My prayers were said by rote.

Of course things did change after Vatican II for the better, but by that time I was

experiencing mental health problems with a prolonged bout of depression. People

felt a long way away and I couldn't explain how I felt or reach out to them. Prayer

seemed meaningless; the mass something detached. After God seemed absent and

I eventually stopped going to church, I wondered who is there for me. This indeed

was dark night of the soul.

Thankfully I had a dear mother-in-law who

unbeknown to me was praying hard for me. I

heard later that one day after praying she knew I

would recover.

As the dark cloud lifted I felt strongly the presence

of God and how he seemed to be working in my

life, and it seemed natural to return to church. I

joined a prayer Group that deepened my faith and

introduced me to the wider community of the

church. Now I experience a loving and accessible

God who is always there for me and helping me

every minute of the day. The mass is meaningful,

the readings pertinent and it is a joy to receive

Communion (now under both kinds).

I realised that being a catholic is not just going to

church and saying my prayers. It is knowing that God is with me and helping me

every minute of every day. Moreover I am part of a local community who believe

what I believe and whenever I go anywhere in London, Great Britain or the world, I

will always meet people of the same faith.

During this year of faith maybe you would write about 400 to 450 words on

Why I am a Catholic. It is good for us to hear about each other’s journey of

faith. Each submission will be anonymous. Please send yours to Fr Pat or Judy
