I started at re:form three years ago, when I was 57. Up until that point

I had mostly walked for exercise and I had never even been on the bike. Today

I am strong and full of energy...which I get to use with my grandchildren. It ’s

made such a big difference in my life! – Fereshteh Yahyapour : La Cost

Exercise had always been an integral part of my life but somehow on the

journey, I lost it. re:form not only helped me find it back but has challenged

me in ways I never knew were possible. – Shawna Esarey : San Elijo Hills

Four Words…I Love re:form fitness. I have always been an active person and I

have tried lots of avenues to up my level of fitness from traditional gym

memberships, to one-on-one personal training, to large group classes and

“boot camps”, and nothing compares. – Whitney Fields : Carlsbad

My goal was to lose weight, maybe even fit into a smaller jean size. Initially,

I started working out several times a week and every week the scale would go

down and the muscles grew. It was amazing to see my body change.

– Susan : San Elijo Hills

After a year of physical therapy with minimal results to address my loss of

muscle mass and lower back problems. It ’s been seven months and I can truly

say that re:form has changed my life. I not only lost 11% of my body fat, I can

now actually pick up my daughter without the fear of hurting my back now

that my core strength is so much better. – Cindy Davis : San Elijo Hills

re:form is not just the name it is what they do. My body is becoming the body I

always wanted but did not know how to get. I am mid 40’s and have no prob-

lem jumping into any activity. Best workout, never the same, results are off the

charts! – James Reeve : San Elijo Hills

What are you celebrating this month? I’ll bet you have at least one big thing on the calendar. At our house, we’ve got two big ones! This month, my husband and I are celebrating 20 years of marriage and my oldest daughter is graduating from high school!

It seems like just yesterday that TK saved the day by helping me when I was stranded after work with a broken down car at the Coconut Grove in Santa Cruz. That Good Samaritan deed started us down a whole new path in life - together. This month, I dusted off an article I wrote here in The Fountain six years ago about what makes a relationship work and how it is the very same principles that hold a community connection together. You’ll see it on page 25.

My daughter graduating from high school seems a little surreal. She has been blessed to grow up here in San Elijo Hills – breaking ground on our house, starting 3rd grade at La Costa Meadows, breaking ground at what is now San Elijo Middle School and then breaking ground once again at Pacific Ridge School where she attended her four years of high school. Her high school years have put her on four different continents and while everything about society says to ‘be

Editor’s CornerkAren SmITH

Accomplishments & Accoladesafraid – be very afraid’ of those teenage years, I have to say, they have been the best! Having teenagers is even more fun than having those cute little toddlers. Seeing them branch out and start to explore their talents and purpose for being on this planet….it is so exciting to watch and be part of!

Along with all of the fun celebra-tions and activities you’ll see here in The Fountain for June, we hope you’ll enjoy reading about some of your own neighbors’ accomplishments. There are so many people doing interesting things here in San Elijo Hills. You’ll find just a few of those spotlighted in this issue.

As you honor Dad, the end of the school year, and the start of summer

this month, we hope you’ll really cherish and celebrate these times and take full advantage of the San Elijo lifestyle – get together with neighbors, attend the Summer Celebration, Buy Local and, most of all, have fun!

If you have a fun story to share with us, don’t hesi-tate to call us at (800) 497-1309 x708 or email me at [email protected].

Sidewalk Saturday Fun!The Sidewalk Saturday Buy Local San Elijo

Hills event held on May 7 was a great success. Over 60 vendors gathered in the Town Square offering some amazing crafts – from fair trade baskets to jewelry and unique children’s items. In addition, fun activities were provided for

children sponsored by A Colorful Universe, Art Soup, Art 4 Children, and the Girl Scouts.

The event was part of the Buy Local campaign sponsored by the San Elijo Hills Foundation. The purpose was to get residents together to share their talents and expertise – while also generating foot traffic in the area to support our local stores.

Thank you to Lanni Insurance for sponsor-ing this event. A special thank you also goes out to everyone who par-ticipated. Your support of these events means so much to everyone who volunteers their time and energy to make them happen. Thanks for being part of it and if you’d like to be included in future events, please email the Foundation and request to be added to their email list at [email protected].

You have to register in advance by going to www.san-mar-cos.net. (Minimum enrollment must be met, so gather up some friends for a group date!) Upcoming dates include: June 10, July 8 and August 12. bev Paine, real living lifestyles

Windermere Exclusive Properties, one of San Diego County’s leading real estate companies, recently announced it had selected Real Living as its new franchisor and that it is changing its name to Real Living Lifestyles in June. Long time resi-dent of San Elijo Hills, Bev Paine, has been a real-tor with Windermere for a number of years. She is very excited about the new franchise agreement with Real Living Lifestyles. “I will be better able to serve my clients with the increased technology and relocation services. More importantly, our phenomenal management team will remain the same. I’m looking forward to Real Results in the Real Estate market in 2011!”

Real Living is a full-service real estate bro-kerage franchise company with a comprehensive and integrated suit of resources and services. The Real Living brand and its innovative concepts were recognized as one of the best by Entrepreneur magazine; won the Inman Innovator Award, and was named “The Most Promising New National Brand” by the Swanepoel TRENDS Report. Real Living is an affiliate of Brookfield Residential Property Services, a leading global pro-vider of real estate and relocation services, technology and knowledge.

Steve Rodgers, President/Owner of Windermere Exclusive Properties, feels the company’s new agreement with Real Living will allow his firm’s agents to immediately benefit from being part of an agent focused and much larger, global organization. “At the end of the day, we have the best of both worlds to offer our agents and their clients: we’re locally owned and operated, but backed by the formidable resources of Real Living.”

Elizabeth Houk

Elizabeth Houk, a nine-year-old San Marcos resident and dance student at San Elijo Dance and Music Academy has been selected from over 150 dancers in the United States to dance with the New York City Ballet this summer. Droves of young ballerinas showed up recently at the National Museum of Dance hoping for the chance to dance with the New York City Ballet (NYCB) company during its season at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, July 5 – 16. Elizabeth, speaking about the audi-tion says, “It was really exciting at the audition because I didn’t think I was going to make it, but then I did! A lot of people were getting cut so I was really nervous. The New York City Ballet is really important and people are going to come from a lot of different places to see the perfor-

mance that I’m going to be in, and I’m really excited!”

Elizabeth is part of a pre-professional conservatory ballet program at San Elijo Dance and Music Academy (SEDMA) in San Marcos, directed by Ben and Lauri-Michelle Houk. In discuss-ing this opportunity with NYCB Lauri-Michelle Houk states, “New

York City Ballet is the premiere bal-let company in the world and to be a part of the Children’s Cast is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a little girl. I think it speaks so highly of our training that once again our students are chosen to dance with other top students from the country.” To find out more about the San Elijo Dance & Music Academy, visit http://www.SanElijoDanceandMusicAcademy.com.

nate Wennes

Nate Wennes, a resident here in San Elijo Hills in the Mariner’s Landing neighborhood, recently celebrated a big win with his travel hockey team with the San Diego Junior Gulls. Nate has been playing hockey since he was 4. He is now in 7th grade at San Elijo Middle School. Nate loves hockey because of the competitiveness and the speed of the sport. His team, made up of players from North County up to Temecula, just finished a long season, but the rewards were great! The three rounds of play-offs started in February. Winning the first round as one of the top two teams in the Bantam Division (13-15 year olds), they moved to the second round for the Southern California Amateur Hockey Association Championship. At that tournament, Nate’s team played Burbank’s number one team upsetting them 2 to 1. This unex-pected victory was exciting for the whole team and all of the fami-lies involved. Ultimately, the team took the State Championships for their age group at the San Jose Shark arena. The four-day tour-nament took the top two teams from Northern California and the top two teams from Southern California to face off for the title. The San Diego Junior Gulls went undefeated in the tournament and even enjoyed an overtime victory in the championship game. It was an exciting season that will always be remembered!

Sophia Walton

Sophia Walton recently participated at the Sidewalk Saturday event where she displayed her paintings for purchase. Sophia has been paint-ing since she was about two years old. She is now seven and is in 2nd grade at SEES. She credits her dad, Steve Walton, and the art program at school for teaching her about art. The Walton family saw the flyer that came home in the Wednesday envelope at school inviting kids to participate in the event with a discounted table and the opportunity to showcase their talents and crafts. Sophia decided the time was right to ‘set up shop’ and she clearly had a fun day of it! Her parents, Steve and

Tatiana, were on-hand all day supporting their little artist. They helped Sophia prepare for the event the week before and to set up her table that morning. Sophia said she had a few pieces before the event, but that she had to work hard the week before to get ready and build up her inventory. She even painted on-site. In fact, at the end of the event, one participant commissioned her to paint an abstract. With only 40 minutes left in the event, she gave it some thought and agreed she could get it done, which she did and sold at her named price of $15. In total, Sophia sold six paintings at the event. Her parents and many event participants were very proud of Sophia for her accomplishments, her tenacity and her talents. When asked what she would want others to know about art - Sophia shared, “That you can have fun and create anything you want!”

rachel latterich

Rachel Latterich, a resident here in San Elijo Hills and a junior at Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, has been named a San Diego Regional Finalist in the Distinguished Young Women competition. Previously known as the Junior Miss Competition, Rachel will join four other contestants throughout California to compete at the state final in July. Rachel is the second student in two consecutive years from Pacific Ridge School to be honored at the state level in the program. Last year, Anisha Mudaliar was named the Distinguished Young Woman of the Year for the State of California.

Distinguished Young Women are recognized for scholastic achievement, community involvement, creativity and the quest for excellence in every facet of life. All of the young women compete in five categories: interview, scholastic, talent, self-expression and fitness. While holding the position of Junior Class President, Rachel has achieved in both academics and community service. She is a member of the Learn to Serve service learning group at Pacific Ridge School, where her goal is to observe and interact with the members of specific communities to gain a better understanding of their major needs, as well as employ her skills and innovation to develop a sustainable solution to that need.

The Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program spans the country, with more than 5,000 of the nation’s brightest and most talented young women participating at the local, state and national levels each year. It is the oldest and largest national scholarship program of its type for high school females. Distinguished Young Women inspires high school females to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments. The program encourages continued education by providing col-lege scholarships, develops self-confidence and the ability to interview effectively; encourages and showcases excel-lence in academic achievement, physical fitness, on-stage performance skills, and the ability to think and communicate clearly; and creates opportunities to beneficially inspire the lives of others.

Jake Vaughn

Jake Vaughn has had an exciting year! He was recently nominated for the 2011 Young Artist of the Year award and had the opportunity to walk the red carpet. At five years old, that’s a pretty amazing accomplishment! Jake has spent the last 14 months on All My Children playing a recurring role as Spike, grandson to Susan Lucci’s character, Erica Kane. Jake’s mom, Janet, shared what an amazing experience it has been. They travel up to L.A. on the days Jake needs to be on the set, often stopping at Disneyland on the way home. “The staff and the actors are wonderful. Jake is very loved on the set and they take such great care of him. He has his own dressing room, studio teacher and acting coach on site.” Janet and Jake were on site the day that it was announced that All My Children was going to be canceled. “It was very emotional for everyone. To be part of this era of the show has been an amazing opportunity for Jake. He really loves being there.” Janet also shared that with the last show being on September 2, it is perfect timing because Jake can transition from the show right into starting kinder-garten at San Elijo Elementary this fall. Some of Jake’s other accomplishments include appearances on the Sarah Silverman Show and playing “Young Finn” on Glee. When you talk to Jake, he smiles and speaks of his ‘work’ as fun. He’s a wiz at memorizing lines and much of it all seems to come very naturally. What’s in the future for Jake? Who knows! With so many doors open, Jake will have lots of opportunities, but like any family in San Elijo Hills, they can’t wait to start kindergarten at SEES!

Jake is not the only ‘celebrity’ in the family. His little sister, Jenna, starred in Star Trek 11 as baby Spock. She’s also been in several commercials and lots of print, includ-ing ads for Target, toy box covers, and more. The Vaughn family has lived here in San Elijo Hills in Promontory Ridge since 2005.

AYSO Region 1505 continues to grow here in San Elijo and assert its presence as the community soccer program of choice. The growth in new soccer programs offered by Region 1505 has been continuous and stable throughout the 7 years of its existence. As part of this expansion, Matrix San Elijo has added two new teams this coming season.

As a pilot program within the AYSO Matrix organization, under-9 (U9) teams have been approved and Region 1505 is taking the lead within AYSO Matrix as the only Region to field a Boys U9 team and Girls U9 team. These two teams will join the existing Boys U11 and Girls U12 teams playing in the Presidio Soccer League as Matrix-San Elijo; the U9 teams look to continue the success already achieved by the teams of 2010.

Speed and Agility

During the month of May the Matrix teams have been receiving specialized train-ing in speed and agility from a former NFL player. Darran Hall of Elite Performance Gym in Poway has been working with each team here on the fields in San Elijo.

Darran is from San Diego and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds to play baseball. He played 3 years for the Reds organization and then went back back to school and played football as a wide receiver for Colorado State University. He was voted MVP of the Holiday Bowl while at Colorado State! He was drafted in the 6th round by the Tennessee Titans and played 4 years in the NFL with Tennessee, St Louis Rams and the Indianapolis Colts.

“I believe Darran will help our players build confidence, core strength, agility, and speed,” stated Fabrice Lapeyre, Girls U12 Coach. “He will help

CHrIS orlAnDo: CITY CounCIl The City has taken several steps toward beginning work on the long anticipated San Marcos Creek District. Last month, the Council approved financing for the first development within the Creek District and took the initial steps toward establishing a rubber-wheeled trolley system that will eventually provide easy access

to the Creek District and neighboring University District developments. In addition, a second project in the Creek District will be considered by the Council soon. While work still remains to secure the environmental approvals needed to allow work to begin on the infrastructure in the heart of the Creek District, these initial steps mark the start of the long awaited development of the Creek District.

In 2007, The City Council approved the plan for the San Marcos Creek District, which includes more than 214-acres of land south of San Marcos Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Discovery Street. The innovative plan envisions mixed-used, residential, and commercial development that will create an active, walkable area in the center of San Marcos. Because the plan also establishes for the first time a comprehensive plan to manage the creek area, a critical natural resource within San Marcos, it has required considerable review by a range of state and federal agencies. That process, which is nearing completion, will provide the approvals necessary to begin work on the infrastructure to support the Creek District.

While the environmental review process continues, two projects within the Creek District, but outside of the area requiring additional environ-mental approvals, are already getting underway. Residences and Shoppes at Creekside is a residential and commercial development at the foot of Grand Avenue across from the entrance to Lowes and the Creekside Market Place. It includes 98 residential units above 26,500 square feet of ground level retail space. The development, which will seek LEED Silver (Leadership in Energy

City Takes Further Steps toward Creating Creek Districtand Environmental Design) or equivalent environmental designation, will provide affordable housing options, bring the initial retail development to the Creek District, and add the first segment of Creekside Drive, which will connect Bent and Grand Avenues. The Council approved financing for the project through the Redevelopment Agency in May 2011.

In addition, in the coming months the Council will consider the East End Main Street development, which is directly adjacent to the Residences and Shoppes at Creekside. Also a residential and retail development, East End Main will complete the first city block of the Creek District. It includes 60 residential units and 7,000 square feet of retail space. The development will also seek LEED Silver certification.

Managing traffic congestion within the City and making the Creek District easily accessible are two key components to the Creek Plan. The additional and improved roads that are a part of the Creek infrastructure development are an important part of that strategy. In addition, the City is actively working to develop a plan for a rubber-wheeled shuttle that would provide easy access to the Creek District and neighboring University District. The shuttle, which would be launched when the two develop-ments are sufficiently established, would connect the Creek and University Districts with other parts of the City and with Sprinter and Breeze transit services. The concept is designed to not only provide easy access to the two districts, but also keep cars off the streets, providing congestion relief on our local roads. The Council took initial steps toward funding the shuttle in May, the complete proposal will be considered in June.

While the City is still several years away from achieving its vision for an active and vibrant Creek District, concrete steps are being taken today to begin the development of the area. Residents will soon begin seeing the initial projects within the Creek District come out of the ground. Over time, the Creek District will become a central point of San Marcos that all residents can enjoy.

Nicole and Todd are on their ‘second tour’ in San Elijo Hills. They originally moved into Calistoga, years ago, but Todd was transferred to Ireland for two years. When they came back, they bought a home in Promontory Ridge and their second tour began!

Todd recently joined Isis Pharmaceuticals in Carlsbad. He is an engineer and is thrilled with the shorter commute after working many years in Temecula. Nicole has worked as a reporter for KUSI, The Reader and for a Temecula news station. However,

right now, she is staying at home with the girls for at least another year or two.

During their two-year stay in Ireland, Todd worked for Abbott Labs and Nicole wrote, produced and filmed a documentary about some of the sacred sites in Ireland. Her finished program aired on two stations in town

there. They lived in a very small village called Grangemockler and their daughter, Cashel, was born in Waterford.

Todd and Nicole have three beautiful little girls. Talia (7) is very outgo-ing. She loves piano and swimming and was recently honored as Student of the Month at San Elijo Elementary. Cashel (4) enjoys the Raggedy Ann Preschool program here in the neighborhood, playdates with her friends, and gymnastics at So Cal Gymnastics. Bellamy (2) is one of the happiest kids you’ll find. She always wakes up in a great mood and makes sure that every-one in family laughs daily.

Nicole’s mom, Rosemary Panther, also lives here in San Elijo Hills in the Calistoga neighborhood. She has a silk art business and makes the most beautiful one of a kind wall hangings and scarves. She can do them in any size and color. You can learn more about her work at www.silkartcreations.net.

As a family, the Thessens love being outdoors. Todd enjoys surfing and golf. They have a big group of friends right here in the neighborhood that they’ve developed through the years. The entire family takes advantage of the convenience of having everything so close – spending much of their time right here in the neighborhood…walking, bike riding, hanging out with fam-ily and friends.

Don’t miss the opportunity to meet the Thessen family when you’re out and about!

Catch Up or Get Ahead this Summer! PoInTS from A PrInCIPAl – DouGlAS HAll

Helping a student take advantage of the opportunities of summer requires some effort and planning. An appropriate place to begin is with your student’s teacher(s). Find out about the areas in which your student may need to do some catching up or some maintenance. Perhaps there are skills that need strengthening through summer practice. Ask about areas in which your student has shown specific interests that can form the basis for summer projects. Inquire about the availability of materials from school for use at home during the summer. And, above all, ask about summer school classes. Find out if your school offers classes for credit or enrichment. No doubt your school will also have information about community programs offered by local agencies other than the school. Gather as much information as you can from the staff at your student’s school.

With information in hand, you are now ready to plan summer activi-ties with your student. Listen to what your student expresses about choices, interests, and needs for the coming weeks. Don’t be discouraged when your student tells you that nothing is interesting- that everything is boring. Make it clear that doing nothing is not an option this summer, and then move into what the available choices are. Be prepared to negotiate, to bargain, and to offer mature and wise counsel about realistic choices so that there will be variety and growth and, yes, even fun for your students.

The summer plans you make with your student should include activi-ties that provide for academic catch-up and maintenance. Your student may attend a remedial class or receive instruction from a qualified tutor if these experiences meet his or her needs. Though this may be a high priority goal, it should be accompanied by other activities which will provide some bal-ance to address the social or emotional needs of your student. Summer is a great time for your students to make new friends in a day camp or summer recreational activity. Summer sports programs, arts and crafts programs, and other learning experiences are often available through community agencies, churches, and even community colleges. The summer months also provide an opportunity for your student to take on increased responsibilities at home and in the family.

Summer is a time when students can engage in music lessons, art projects, community service projects, and other activities that are not pro-vided at your student’s school. Research the opportunities for these kinds of enrichment experiences so that new adventures can be part of your student’s summer plan. As always, please contact your student’s school about help-ing your student get ahead or catch up during the summer. We are here to assist you both during the school year and beyond. Let’s make it a summer to remember for all of our lifelong learners!

Summer vacation! What better time to finally finish that book that’s been bouncing around in your backpack all year? SEMS students clearly love reading—they checked out almost 18,000 books during this school year! Summer vacation is the perfect time for hours of uninterrupted reading. And parents, the research is clear that students who read over summer break retain valu-able reading skills.

There’s never been a better time or place to be a middle school reader. Both the San Marcos and the Carlsbad public libraries are open 7 days a week, and both have plenty of summer activities planned. Middle school students can also volunteer in the summer reading programs for younger children. The libraries’ schedule of events will be available very soon on their websites, so be sure to check them out.

Do you have a long trip planned for the sum-mer? Both public libraries offer audio books you can download to your computer or iPod. It’s easy to find a title the whole family can enjoy using the online library catalog. Don’t forget about ebooks, too! You can down-load books from the library directly to your computer. Of course, there’s nothing like turning pages, so don’t forget to browse the shelves for good books. If you have younger brothers or sisters, why not model good reading habits? Check out an enormous stack of picture books and enjoy them together.

Wondering what to read? Check out the links on the SEMS Library’s webpage at www.smusd.org/sems! There’s enough there to keep you busy until the first day of school and beyond. Look on the navigation bar on the left side of the main page, and happy reading!

school newsPACe Scholars

SMHS is proud to announce that 81 students have committed to attend Cal State San Marcos in the fall through the PACE Promise! To date, 24 of those students have already qualified to receive a PACE scholarship for $1,000 a year for 4 years. PACE scholars and their parents were invited to the PACE Scholar Celebration breakfast at CSUSM to honor their achievement. Juniors on track for PACE (meeting A-G college entrance requirements) were invited to a PACE Breakfast of Champions. Students heard from cur-rent CSUSM students, learned about upcoming deadlines for testing, etc. and were bussed to AMF Bowling Alley in San Marcos to celebrate their achievements.

What is the PACe Promise?

The PACE Promise, a joint program of San Marcos Unified School District (SMUSD) and California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), guarantees CSUSM admission to all district students continuously enrolled in the district from 9th through 12th grade who meet entrance requirements. This program begins with the SMUSD graduating classes of 2009.

The Promise provides a step-by-step plan of preparation for college. Beginning in seventh grade, San Marcos students must work to fulfill program expectations. Meeting these requirements also prepares them for admission to most California public and private universities and colleges. Students who meet all the program’s academic benchmarks and the financial need criteria, as determined by CSUSM, may receive monetary assistance from a private foundation associated with the Promise while attending the university.

Improving college options for this generation of students, the Promise provides dynamic, accelerated services which include tutoring and mentoring, visits to the university campus, enhanced test preparation for English and math entry-level exams, and extensive information regarding college prepara-tion and admission. The Promise thus provides a vital link from the secondary school setting to the university.

Purpose of the Promise

• To give students the necessary academic tools for entering college or the workforce without remediation.

• To improve access, retention and college completion for underrepre-sented students.

• To raise academic expectations and ensure that students not only qual-ify for college admission but thrive when they get there.

• To expand comprehensive support services and to target every student in every school.

For more information about the PACE Promise, visit PACE.smusd.org.

Imagine training athletes for nine months, getting them to a prescribed level of conditioning…then telling them to take three months off and do

nothing. Now, imagine getting them back on the field of competition at the end of those three months and expecting them to perform at their training peak. Ironically, this is the very thing that parents and schools routinely do over summer vacation – and the effect of this lapse is seen most dramati-cally in the lack of retention of basic math skills. Studies have shown that,

on average, students lose nearly 2.6 months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months: nearly one third of a school year! The same thing can happen with reading and writing skills When the school year begins, teachers will typically spend the first month reviewing what happened last year. Not the best use of time!

On the other hand, what an opportunity summer can be! Summer is a great time to build on students’ basic skill sets and get them prepared for next school year. Doing a quick, intensive review/preview course of study at a learning center this summer can turn this wasted time into a great opportunity to ensure a successful year at school. Breezing through the first month of school gives students confidence and establishes a “virtuous cycle” whereby the teacher views them as students who “get it” and rewards them with positive reinforcement rather than exasperation.

Academic basic skill development and retention is a key summer pas-time, and one that is likened to sports camps that keep skills honed between seasons. In today’s schools, budget cuts and increasing class sizes are a fact of life. During the summer, having your child at an academic learning cen-ter with very low student to tutor ratios can give them an important basic skills boost and increase their confidence. The summer months allow the time to review last year’s learning, fill any skill gaps, and prepare for the upcoming year.

Boost Skills & Prevent Summer Learning Loss in Your KidsBelow are some facts extracted from an article By Ruth A. Peters, Ph.D., a contributor of “Today.”

• All students experience learning losses when they do not engage in edu-cational activities during the summer.

• On average, students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade level equiv-alency in mathematical computation skills during the summer months.

• A majority of students (56%) want to be involved in a summer program that “helps kids keep up with schoolwork or prepare for the next grade.”

• Research shows that teachers typically spend between 4-6 weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer.

• The summer months are an excellent time for your child to fill in learn-ing gaps or zoom ahead with enrichment activities at supplemental learning centers or via tutors or last year’s teacher.

• Learning alone and informally, or via a structured group for either part of the day or part of the summer, will help to prevent summer learning loss and help your child stay sharp for school next year.

It is important for children to have fun in the summer and enjoy family, friends, and the beach. It is also important for them to use this opportunity, even if only for a few hours each week, to hone their academic skills and be properly prepared for the upcoming school year.

For more information about summer learning programs that are available, contact Tutoring Club San Marcos at (760) 599-0886 or visit their website at www.tutoringclub.com. Tutoring Club is a proud sponsor of programs at SEES and SEMS.

Remember that old commercial for Chiffon Margarine back in the 70’s (OK, I just

aged myself ). I think the line was “It’s not nice to FOOL Mother Nature!” Well, I think that is really good advice!

Don’t get me wrong. I love technology and innovation, but it seems to me that when we mess with Mother Nature, it never works out so well for our health. Our body is a per-fectly designed organism with the sole purpose of continually healing itself. All it asks for in return is the proper fuel to do so. The cool thing is, Mother Nature also provides the perfect fuel for our bodies and an internal mechanism that tells us what the best fuel is and how much and when to consume it.

Sometimes, I think we are a bit too smart for our own good. We some-how think we can improve on Nature by making things ‘better’ (aka: faster and cheaper). But what happens is, we end up making them worse (aka: faster and cheaper). Particularly, when it comes to our food.

In a lot of ways, we have really messed up our food. Sure, we can produce a heck of a lot of food (and we have a lot of people to feed, so for the most part it is a noble cause), but we should also be asking – Is the food we produce good for our bodies? Is it what our bodies require to be healthy? Looking around these days, I would say, not so much!

Whenever we take something from its natural state and alter it (to make it better, faster, cheaper), we think we are smarter than Mother Nature and that we can do it better. We take that whole food, whether it be a plant or animal, as it is found in nature. We strip things out, add things back in, alter its genetics, feed it steroids, antibiotics, spray it with chemicals, add chemicals, add color, wrap it up with lots of healthy pictures on the pack-age and viola, we have a brand new food that we can store, ship, market and sell. Wow, that is like magic!

Well, after all of that food ‘voodoo’ it does kinda look like food, but when it goes into our bodies, our bodies don’t know what to do with it. When we alter our food from its original format, by processing it, we are not necessarily making it better for our health. In fact, most of the time we are making it worse. We are removing things that Nature creates that our bodies need and adding foreign things that our body has to now somehow deal with. Ultimately, what we are doing when we process food is we are making it more profitable (not healthier).

Now, I am not going to go get all political up in your grill, but sometimes following the money is interesting. I mean did you ever wonder why healthy food does not have all the fancy packaging and commercials? Why is all the healthy stuff just laying there for you to pick out and put into a plastic bag? How come large food companies are not marketing healthy foods to our kids on Saturday morning cartoons? Could it be that there is more profit in bad processed food vs. good healthy foods? Plus, who is regulating what is healthy for us and what is not, the government? And, what companies contribute the most money to the government?

Just for fun, let’s add some insult to injury. Now that we have messed

It’s not Nice to FOOL Mother Nature! with our food, made it unhealthy and have gotten really good at marketing it and mak-ing a handsome profit, we start gaining a few extra pounds. Then through some bad information, we are taught to eat a low fat diet, watch our calorie intake and exercise more – hence the boom of the fitness industry and the low fat diet craze. Yet, our health is spiraling downward out of control even faster now — obesity, high blood pres-sure, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and so on.

The solution is easy, right? Just stop eating the bad food and bada-bing bada-

boom, problem solved! Nope, that is way too easy. What we do instead is use our ‘smarts’ to address the symptoms rather than fixing the original problem. How? Drugs, of course! We have a drug for everything. (Hey, medicines do play an important role at times, but sometimes addressing the root cause may be a better approach vs. covering up the symptoms – although much less profitable).

So, we have food companies making a boat load of money selling us food that is making us sick and we have pharmaceutical companies making a boat load of money selling us drugs to hide the symptoms caused by the food that is making us sick. That just seems to me like running on a treadmill and getting nowhere (oh yeah, we are doing that, too)!

There is a lot of information out there on what is healthy for us and what is not healthy for us. People are confused. Heck, sometimes I am confused and I spend all my time researching this topic! There is so much information and mis-information out there that I am very sympathetic for people trying to do the right thing for their health. For years I thought I was doing all the right things, but it turns out I wasn’t.

No one wants to be overweight. No one wants to be sick. So, what do you do? Unfortunately, we can’t wait for it to fix it self. We are all going to have to fix this problem individually. We have to take the responsibility ourselves to get educated on what is right for our bodies.

If I had to make it as simple as possible, I would say just remember this one line, “Don’t mess with Mother Nature!” As much as you can, make sure the food you eat is whole (not processed or at least minimally processed), buy organic (locally, if possible) and eat a good portion of your produce raw so you get the benefits that Mother Nature intended.

Feed your body the fuel it was designed to run on and you will have that perfect body Mother Nature intended for you to have.

Celebrating the Unique Qualities of Dads...

to experience depression, to exhibit disruptive behavior, or to lie and were more likely to exhibit pro-social behavior. This same study found that boys with involved fathers had fewer school behavior problems and that girls had stronger self-esteem.”

Researchers attribute some of the increase in self-esteem to a father’s tendency to encourage children to engage in new experiences and handle situations more independently. This, in turn, fosters a sense of personal responsibility and confidence in their abilities, since the father has shown faith in the child’s ability to perform a given task.

As a single mom, when I started reading this report, I thought, “That’s super for those kids whose dads are still involved in their children’s lives, but what about the rest of us?” I needn’t have worried. The researchers go on to state that any male figure in a child’s life can impart these positive effects, including a stepfather, an uncle, a grandfather or a close friend.

No matter their actual title – Daddy, Grandpa, Uncle, neighbor Brian – it’s clear that men play a vital role in a child’s life, providing something unique as men that mothers just can’t. Of course, the article remarks, “The important thing to remember is that mothers and fathers often bring dif-ferent strengths and styles to their parenting roles. These roles complement each other, meaning that they are not interchangeable and are each necessary for healthy childrearing.”

Since we now find ourselves in the month of “dads and grads”, there seems to be no better time to appreciate these men who bring so much to our lives. Happy Father’s Day to all dads and honorary fathers!

Historically, the perspective of fathers can be summed up by Adam Sandler’s character in the movie, Big Daddy: “Having a kid is great...

as long as his eyes are closed and he’s not moving or speaking.” Being actively involved in the minutiae of their children’s lives has more often been rel-egated to mothers in many families, leaving a lot of fathers to the traditional role of breadwinner and responsible for introducing rough-housing into the playtime rotation. Sometimes the father himself institutes and maintains these roles; other times, he may land there by default, feeling edged out of any other roles by an uber-capable, multi-tasking supermom.

However, evolving trends in parental roles have brought more and more stay-at-home dads into the picture. Bucking traditional stereotypes completely, these fathers provide the daily care for their children; they also shoulder the responsibility for most of the household tasks, such as cooking, cleaning and shopping for the family. Sometimes as a result of a job loss, other times as a conscious decision by both parents, becoming a stay-at-home father is forcing a new generation to re-examine traditional gender roles and the abilities of fathers to parent their children equally well.

Interestingly, though, it might not be a matter of fathers behaving more like mothers. Current research suggests that the unique qualities a father – or any other prominent male figure – brings to his relationship with his children is integral in their personal development and well-being. A report published from The Institute for the Study of Civil Society states that chil-dren whose fathers play an active role in their lives score higher in empathy, perform better in school and have better peer relationships than those who do not have a strong male figure. It’s also important to note that the father need not live in the same house full-time with the child for these positive effects to take hold, so long as the child feels a close emotional connection with his father. For the many divorced parents who share custody of their children, this is particularly significant. It really is a matter of quality over quantity in this case.

Rough-house play, often the bane of many-a mother’s existence – fraught with concern for injury, flashes of bloodied trips to the ER – is actu-ally an important teaching tool. For younger children, researchers state, “[F]athers create obstacles for their children and demand respect for limits and boundaries. At the same time, they challenge their children and encourage them to explore their own strength, their ability to do new things, and their impact on the world around them.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services published a report of the Office on Child Abuse and Neglect, U.S. Children’s Bureau, which echoes these findings: “One study of school-aged children found that children with good relationships with their fathers were less likely

Community Love – I Do!

The good news is that you’re now beyond the puppy love and into a more ‘grown up’ kind of love…probably one like you’ve never experienced before. That infatuation you had for the community has evolved into a deeper love and commitment. It’s at this stage that you begin to feel like a real family. The love, while different, is deeper than you ever anticipated and it takes your life to a completely different level. Friendships are deeper. Your commitments are deeper. You’ve never felt as connected to anything before.

Obviously, at this stage you could also take a different path. In marriage, they call it the ‘seven year itch.’ Suddenly, you start spending your free time looking at new neighborhoods…younger models. You start to notice all the little things that bug you. You start to notice the weeds and rather than doing something about it, you complain. You start to count the number of dog piles along the trails and common areas. You start looking for reasons why the

‘love is gone’. You start to fantasize about how a new community will change everything. You

justify all of the reasons why ‘moving on’ will be better in the long run. Hey, we’ve all seen marriages that took this path and you know where it’s heading.

If, however, your marriage makes it through the children and work pressure phase, you have something really signifi-

cant…something only few people find in their lives. (Did you know that after

15 years of marriage only 2% will divorce?) You’ve survived a series of shocks together

-- the shock of having children, the shock of no romance, the shock of work and family pressures.

You’ve found all of the little tiny ways to stay connected. You find more ‘us’ time. You schedule more play time. You

realize that the love and passion is still there; it was just temporarily buried. You begin to help each other find ways to live your best life. You

find you have a true partner in life. So, what’s the secret? How do you get there? How do you make it last?• You find time for play.• You spend time together.• You remember what brought you together and you find ways to do

those things together.• You don’t ‘nickel and dime’ everything little thing.• You argue constructively.• You keep a sense of humor.• And, you take your commitment ‘for better or for worse’ seriously.

The same goes for keeping ‘community love’ alive. If you’re looking for more than the infatuation of a ‘sense of community’ – if you want a true community…a love that lasts…something that will make your family life rich…something that your kids will come home for…something that will help you live your best life…it takes work. It takes some ups and downs and it takes personal sacrifice, but there’s nothing like it when you get to the other side and find you have a true life partner and connection that allows you to live your best life with all the love, passion, romance and fun that goes with it.

That’s what this community has to offer you. All you have to say is “I do!”

Think about a time when you felt ‘true’ love. There are very distinct stages. At first, you are so infatuated with each other that you spend

every moment together. You go out of your way to do nice things for each other. You don’t ‘sweat the small stuff ’. There’s passion, romance, spontane-ity and lots of fun.

The natural course of love moves next to -- commitment. The commit-ment is exciting at first (engagement, wedding, etc.), but it’s not long before the reality of marriage sets in. Sure, you still love each other and life is still good…very good, but it’s different. There are ‘roles’ and ‘expectations’ and ‘routines’ and ‘rituals’ and before long, things are more automatic than spon-taneous and you start noticing the little things…not just the things you love, but the little things that drive you nuts! It’s where you go from this point that determines the course of your future together.

The longer I live in San Elijo Hills, the more I real-ize that community is like marriage. Seriously, think about it. Whether you moved in a week or a decade ago, you probably moved in completely enamored with the idea of a ‘perfect’ little community. You fell head over heels in love. Your house was perfect. Your neighbors were perfect. Everything around you was perfect! You met your neighbors out in the driveway and talked for hours. Sure, you had noth-ing in common with them, but it didn’t mat-ter. They were PERFECT! You were over-whelmed with this happy feeling of infatuation. You told all of your friends about your amazing community. You invited everyone you knew over to see this magic little place. You vowed you’d spend the rest of your life here…through thick and thin…better or worse…richer or poorer.

But, like marriage, it’s not long before ‘routine’ starts to set in. Suddenly, you realize that rather than hanging out chatting with the neighbors, you’re trying to find ways to avoid those lengthy conversations. You start to notice things about your house that aren’t quite perfect and begin to bury yourself every weekend in home improvement projects. Things that used to be new and fun become ‘expected’ and then when they don’t happen, you’re disap-pointed. Voluntary events start to feel like obligations. On and on it goes.

Hey, don’t get me wrong…you still LOVE the community. In fact, you love it so much that you decide it’s time to step up and get involved in something. Just like having children in a marriage…you decide to ‘give birth’ to a group or a club or a neighborhood gathering or a volunteer posi-tion. And, just like having children, it changes EVERYTHING! You love it dearly. You give up your free time for it. You make sacrifices. You love every minute of it, but you’re exhausted all the time. You simply don’t have enough time. All of the spontaneous and fun moments you used to have are gone. You WANT them…but you just can’t muster the energy to make them happen…so you roll over and go to sleep.

And, just like in a marriage, this is the stage where you realize commu-nity is a lot of work. You realize that it’s not ‘magic’ and that you’re going to have to make some conscious effort to make your ‘community love’ last. You can no longer rely on spontaneous moments to occur. You have to cre-ate them. You have to create time for ‘romance’. You have to make time to rekindle that love you swore would never die.

My husband and I will celebrate our 20-year anniversary this month. That’s a big number! The following article is one that I wrote for The Fountain back in 2005

talking about what it takes to keep love alive. I dusted it off because it’s such an important message. Community is a lot like marriage. Relationships have very distinct

stages and so does community life. My 20 years with TK has resulted in the most amazing life partnership. And, this year, we celebrate 10 years in San Elijo Hills….

another commitment that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

business spotlight

June is a month of celebrations and parties from graduations to Father’s Day, weddings, anni-versaries and more. Whatever the occasion, The Crimson Cake is a company you’ll want to have on your radar.

The Crimson Cake is a custom cake and cup-cake shop right here in the La Costa Meadows Business Park and they will knock your socks off with their amazing cakes and personalized service. The business is operated by two sisters, Alicia Phoenix and Sarah Pilapil. Alicia attended the Scottsdale Culinary Institute in Arizona and she definitely has more than a knack for cake decorating. Alicia has been deco-rating cakes for over ten years, but she and her sister officially started The Crimson Cake in the fall of 2010. Sarah brought her talents in photography and marketing to the business, creating a perfect match of talents and skills. Together they do it all – orders, baking, decorating, delivery, web design, marketing and blogging. And, you can tell how much fun they are having when you see their work.

The Crimson Cake website (www.crimsoncake.com) allows you to not only learn about their business and see a gallery of amazing cakes, but you can even build your own cake right there online. Choose the size, flavor, shape, decorations and more to create the perfect cake for that special occa-sion. Sarah shared, “We rarely have someone ask to have a cake from our gallery replicated exactly. Everyone has their own spin, which is why we came up with our tagline – ‘Cake as Unique as You.’”

The perfect cake, cupcakes or cookies can really help establish the theme of any special event. Pool party cakes, graduation cake and cupcakes, wed-dings, bachlor parties, 1st birthday ‘smash’ cakes…the options are limitless. Cupcakes featuring your child’s favorite character, sport, or activity, can really make your party theme come to life. The Crimson Cake can even match the hair color or other traits of the person being honored. You name it!

The Crimson Cake recently participated in a cupcake challenge at the Terraza models, where they were able to recreate San Elijo Hills in cupcakes. The cupcakes included all of the shops on the main strip, the schools, the park, Visitor’s Center and the fountain.

The Crimson Cake delivers cakes from San Diego to Temecula and delivery is free here in San Elijo Hills with a minimum purchase. To learn more, visit www.crimsoncake.com or call them at (760) 613-8973 or email [email protected].

“Bev represented us on the purchase of our new home in San Elijo Hills. We were initially overwhelmed with making a purchase from 3000 miles away, but Bev walked us through the process and negotiated excellent incentives on our behalf. She worked very hard to ensure all our needs were met, and continued to assist us even after we closed escrow. We are so thankful to Bev for all she has done (and continues to do) for us!”

“In a choppy housing market you need an agent that keeps the selling and buying on an even keel. We knew Bev, with her confi dence, tenacity and sense of humor, was the agent we wanted to work with from day one. Her advice for staging and selling the house proved invaluable. She brought the buyers to the door and kept them in the process. That’s experience!”
