FORTHCOMING SYMPOSIUM
International Symposium on Modelling Soil-Water-Structure Interactions SOWAS '88, Delft, The Netherlands, 29 August-2 September 1988
This symposium will be organized under the auspices of the International Association for Hydraulic Research (IAHR), Section Experimental Methods in Hydraulics and Fluid Mechanics. It will be sponsored by the following: the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMFE); the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM); the Royal Institution of Engineers in The Netherlands, Division for Civil Engineering; Delft University of Technology; 'Rijkswaterstaat'; Delft Geotechnics; and Delft Hydraulics.
Subject fields where interactions may be important include:
--hydraulic and marine structures --berthing structures and (bridge) piers ---dikes and dams --filters under non-stationary conditions --offshore structures --anchoring --pile foundations in marine environment --landslides, earthquakes and liquefaction ---dredging/dumping
Problems concerning loads, responses and failures all fall within the scope of the symposium. Points of particular interest are:
--model laws with special emphasis on scale effects 235

--measurements and particular experiences in nature --special measurement techniques in models and nature ---comparison of scale models with experiences in nature -----comparison of computations with model and field observations ---description of particular and interesting phenomena --applications of new materials (e.g. geotextiles)
Authors wishing to contribute are invited to send an abstract--in triplicate-- of their proposed contribution before 1 October 1987. Abstracts must be in English and no longer than two A4 pages, excluding illustrations. They must show the full title of the paper, the names and affiliations of all authors and the full mailing address of the lead author. Preliminary selection of papers to be presented at the symposium will be made on the basis of a review of the abstracts.

FORTHCOMING PUBLICATION
A B o o k o n C a s e Histor ies
The Committee on Geotextiles and Geosynthetics of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMFE) intends to prepare a book describing outstanding case histories where geotextiles, geomembranes, and other geosynthetics were used. Special emphasis will be put on projects likely to be of interest to geotechnical engineers, such as dams, embankments, retaining structures, landslide repair, drainage, waste disposal facilities, etc. Only case histories of structures actually constructed will be considered (test sections, experimental projects, and full-scale tests will not be accepted). Approximately 50 outstanding projects will be selected by the Committee. Each case history will be described in four pages using a standard format. Proposals to prepare case histories should be received before 31 December 1987. The earliest proposals will have the highest chance of being considered. Proposals should include: (1) name of the structure; (2) country where the structure is constructed; (3) a maximum of ten typewritten lines of explanation as to why the proposed project is outstanding (dimensions, critical role of the geosynthetic, performance monitored for many years, etc.); (4) name of person(s) who will accept to write the case history or get it written; and (5) any supporting information such as published papers, photographs, etc.
