The Chapman FundWe believe exposure to other cultures at a young age is critical to becoming a citizen of the world. That is the vision of Howard and Betsy Chapman, community leaders and generous donors. A significant scholarship fund has been set up in their name and is administered by FWSCI. This fund exists to facilitate international exchange opportunities for Allen County high school-age students. Monies can also be used to support students between the ages of 14 to 21 from our sister cities to travel to Fort Wayne.

Fort Wayne, Indiana and Mawlamyine, Myanmar signed an official Friendship City agreement in February 2016. This pact opens the door for student and cultural exchanges between Fort Wayne and Mawlamyine.

Taizhou CHINA

In 1978, Takaoka Mayor Kenji Hori led the first official delegation from Takaoka to Fort Wayne. This sister alliance has led to many exchanges of government officials, teachers, students, artists, and private citizens.

The official recognition of a Sister City relationship was completed in March of 1990. Since that time, there have been many exchanges, including Plock’s Wisla Folk Ensemble appearing multiple times in Fort Wayne; several Fort Wayne teachers conducting summer classes in English in Plock; as well as celebrations in both cities commemorating anniversaries of the alliance.

The formal agreement initiating a Sister City relationship was signed in Gera, June 6, 1992, by Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke and Gera Mayor Michael Galley. There have been numerous exchanges between the two cities as artists, musicians, government officials, and students have participated in special events in both communities.

On May 10, 2012, the formal sister city agreement was signed in Mayor Henry’s office with Mayor Henry, Tom Herr, Xue Xianchu and Xiang Wenmin signing their names on the agreement. The agreement represents just the first step of long march. Both cities will have to orchestrate more exchanges and form closer ties in economy, education, health care, culture and sports in the future.
