A Tribute to Asbury United Methodist Women

Throughout the month of March, you will hear tributes to United Methodist Women who have left a memorable impression in their family’s life and in their community.

 March 5 ~ Vassal Marcus

March 12 ~ Garnet Hammond   March 19 ~ Robert Reid

March 26 ~ Albert Dickson

A TRIBUTE FROM VASSAL MARCUS

Alva Smith Marcus was born March 17, 1926 in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Cardozo High School, she attended Howard University and received a BA degree in 1950. She met and married Vassal Marcus a fellow student and created a family consisting of three boys -- Winston, Jonathan, and Theodore; and one girl, Robin. Alva was a fifth generation Washingtonian, a retired social worker and educator with a lifelong interest in literacy and civil rights. She effectively promoted the integration of Glen Echo Amusement Park, three public schools, and two communities. She lovingly contributed three sons to Asbury as altar boys -- once, Winston, was the youngest in Asbury's history. After a blessed marriage of 65 years, she sadly departed this life on February 8, 2016, the birthday of her youngest son, Theodore. We miss her, but we are confident that she is sitting at the "right hand of God", and "is waiting for me", her husband insists.

We are blessed and deeply grateful to all who have helped nurture and grow our Tree for the Future. We encourage you to be a charter sponsor of the Asbury Tree for the Future campaign, by remembering or honoring a family member, friend, or that special someone in your life; or by celebrating a special event in your life. If you wish to make your donation in person, a table will be set-up in the Fellowship Hall TODAY. Tree for the Future contributions also may be left in the Finance Office or mailed to Asbury, Attention: Tree for the Future Campaign. Be sure to include an order form, with the exact wording you want on your rock, acorn, or leaf (space and characters for engraving is limited). Forms can be found in the Narthex and outside the Main Office. We are pleased to accept credit card payments. Visit www.asburyumcdc.org and select ‘Donate’, then follow the prompts until you get to ‘Giving Tree’ and make your payment. Contact the Finance Office if you need assistance with making a credit card payment. We also can offer installment plans. If you’re writing a check, be sure to put ‘Donor Tree’ in the memo line. You can make payments until your rock, acorn or leaf is fully paid. Receipts of your payments will be emailed or mailed. Questions? Contact: Martrice Green, 202-397-3451/[email protected] René Carter, 202-422-7948/[email protected]

HEART DISEASE MONTH

Heart disease is the leading cause for death for American men and women. African American men and women are particularly at risk because they are two times as likely to have hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetes as white men and women. How does this disease present? It presents with swelling of ankles, shortness of breath, chest pain or pain in the neck or shoulder, indigestion (which is heart disease until proven otherwise.) What are the commonest risk factors? Smoking cigarettes, high blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, a sedentary life style, obesity, and hypercholesterolemia. Since an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure—how do we prevent it? After the age of 40—do the following: 1. Stop smoking cigarettes. 2. Take medication as necessary to keep

blood pressure under 130 mm/hg and cholesterol less than 200 mg/cc.

3. Add exercise to your daily routine start

by walking or other aerobic exercise at least 15 minutes a day, three times weekly. In two weeks, increase to 30 minutes a day, three times weekly. Eventually, increase to 30 minutes a day, five times weekly.

4. Add prayer/meditation to your daily routine. Exercise and meditation should each be done at least 5 times a week, if not daily for no less than 15-30 minutes.

5. Increase healthy eating—eat more fruits

and green vegetables, less red meat and salt and fried foods.

6. Annual visit to your primary care

physician to get your HB A1C, cholesterol and BP checked.

7. Sit less—interrupt sitting for five minutes

every hour with, 3-5 minutes walking or other exercises.

8. Sleep 7-8 hours every night. 9. Avoid being overweight or obese.
