This year our meeting is scheduled for April 28. We will be meeting at Reagan Elementary. Sign in begins at 7:00 pm and the official meeting starts at 7:30 pm. We will be also be serving a BBQ dinner buffet, so I hope many of you will come out, eat a little dinner, visit with neighbors and vote for your new board members. Speaking of new board members, we will be voting to fill THREE vacancies this year. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please send your bio to Keri at [email protected]. This year, the Board approved a new committee called the “Major Project and Capital Expenditure Committee.” This committee is comprised of the ACC Chair, Landscaping Chair and Pool Committee Chair. Currently, Bill Mauer, Mel Kirkland, and Jennifer Harrison hold these positions. The role of this committee is to bring together all the different expertise in the neighborhood in order to efficiently plan for future improvements. Mel and Bill have spent several hours driving through neighboring communities to see what amenities other similar neighborhoods are offering. The committee then solicited the services of Larson Burns Smith, a landscape architect company. Larson Burns Smith provided an estimate to prepare landscaping plans for several areas in the neighborhood. The Board voted to select two of the projects: Pool 1 improvements and mailbox covers for the community mailboxes. We will hopefully have some plans to show off at the Annual Meeting. If you have professional experience that would lend itself to this committee, and you are interested in joining, please email Mel at landscaping@ forestoaksonline.com. Jennifer Harrison has also been a busy lady. She has been reaching out to several pool companies to request estimates for possible improvements to Pool 2. With the improving economy, the pool companies in town are very busy and this is going to be a somewhat time consuming process. But Jennifer has some exciting plans and is very excited to get this project going. If you share Jennifer’s passion for improving the pools in our neighborhood, she would love to have your help on the committee. If you are interested, you can email her at [email protected]. Paint MaintenanceAs we move towards spring it is time to start thinking about what needs maintenance. Many of the homes in our neighborhood are passing their first decade. Because of this, many of the painted exteriors of our homes are showing their age.

It is important to repaint when wear-and-tear shows to help prevent premature damage to siding and trim, including damage from the sun, water, and mold. This can be seen in fading (or chalking), or when very far along as uneven color due to the siding showing through in thinner areas of the paint.

Most of the siding in the neighborhood is hardie board. This strong material is a fiber cement board, capable of withstanding our rough weather. The siding itself is good for 50 or more years, if maintained. It is naturally resistant to rot, but any damage or non-sealed edge

can be an issue with water and fast temperature changes. When it starts to damage, it will delaminate or warp. Paint provides a good seal over the edges.

Trim differs across the neighborhood, from hardie board to wood. Once wood trim shows any discoloration or wear it should be painted. Mold and mildew will start to grow quickly, spreading under the paint. It is an accelerating process, as mold holds more water in the wood and is able to draw moisture out of the air. Once compromised it becomes a potential leak into the home if the wood penetrates the siding, such as with a gable vent.

Thanks – I’m Out of HereAs I wrap up my tenure on the Forest Oaks Board of Directors and look toward a future of watching and participating from the sidelines, I wanted to take a moment to remind residents of the importance of being involved in our neighborhood. From sorting through homeowner complaints to considering lifeguard proposals and monument sign bids, serving on the HOA board is rarely exciting and generally underappreciated. That said, there are few things that so directly affect our lives like the neighborhood in which we live. Whether it’s volunteering for a committee, taking a turn on the board of directors, or just showing up at the yearly meeting, every household should consider participation on some level as part of the responsibility of owning their home. As much as I cannot express how happy I am to finally leave the HOA Board, I’m equally as happy to have had the experience of participating in my community. With a new HOA Board election just around the corner, I hope that many of you will consider running. I cannot promise that it will be any fun, but I can say that it is definitely worth doing!

If you’re interested please submit your name and a brief bio to Keri at [email protected].

The Board of Directors approved to install a monument sign at the entrance to the Community Center where all social events will be posted. This will allow homeowners to easily view the upcoming social events. This improvement will be installed within the next two months.

While ski trips and beach vacations offer plenty of excitement for Spring Breakers, there are alternatives close to home that may be just as enjoyable. If your idea of a “wild” time includes learning more about Texas birds, animals, and plants, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department has just the tools you need.

The Great Texas Wildlife Trail Maps and Birding Trail Maps showcase four areas of the state with eight separate maps that include recommended driving routes and locations of parks and natural areas, camping sites, ranches, hiking trails, and more. Read about the birds or wildlife you might spot as you drive or hike in each location, and follow the careful directions to reach your destination easily. The maps detail the best time of year to see certain species, so keep that in mind when planning your trip.

Three Birding Trail Maps are available: the Lower Texas Coast (South Padre west across the Rio Grande Valley to Laredo), Central Texas Coast (Matagorda Bay south to Kingsville), and Upper Texas Coast (Brazosport north to Beaumont).

The Heart of Texas Wildlife Trail is divided into two maps, East (starts south of San Antonio and follows points north along US Hwy 281 and IH35) and West (San Antonio to Del Rio to San Angelo).

Explore the Panhandle Plains Wildlife Trail with the map that takes you from San Angelo to Amarillo and beyond.

More than 250 sites are included in the Prairies and Pineywoods Wildlife Trail Maps. The East map ranges from Houston north to Paris, Texas. The West map covers a broad area from Houston to Austin, through Dallas and Fort Worth, on up to Wichita Falls.

Remember to take field guides with you to help you identify plants and birds, and don’t forget your binoculars.
