Service of Worship

March 13, 2016 at 11:00 am Welcome! Thank you for joining us today for worship.

If you are visiting, please join us in wearing a name tag so that we might greet you. Our ushers have hearing devices, large print editions of the bulletin,

activity bags for children staying in worship, and directions to our nursery for babies and young children.

Prayer of Preparation Almighty God, you have given us this good land as our heritage. Make us always remember your generosity and constantly do your will. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Make us who come from many nations with many different languages a united people. Defend our liberties and give those whom we have entrusted with authority the spirit of wisdom, that there might be peace and justice in our land. Amen.

Welcome

Greeting Our God with Joy

Call to Worship Elder James Manista Leader: Welcome! The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. People: And also with you. Leader: Our help is in the name of the Lord. People: Who made heaven and earth. Leader: This is the day that the Lord has made. People: We will rejoice and be glad in it. Leader: Let us worship God.

Renewing Our Relationship with God

Litany of Confession Leader: Almighty God, you alone are good and holy. Purify our lives

and make us brave disciples. We do not ask you to keep us safe, but to keep us loyal, so we may serve Jesus Christ, who, tempted in every way as we are, was faithful to you.

People: From lack of reverence for truth and beauty; for going along with mean and ugly things; O God, deliver us.

Leader: From cowardice that dares not face truth; laziness content with half-truth; or arrogance that thinks we know it all; O God, deliver us.

People: From being dull, pompous or rude; from putting down our neighbors; O God, deliver us.

Leader: From being satisfied with the way things are, in church or in the world; from failing to share your indignation about injustice; O God deliver us.

All: O God, forgive us.

Affirming the Good News in Our Lives

Assurance of Pardon

Scripture Lessons Isaiah 58: 1-12

Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God.

“Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?” Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers. Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the

thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?

Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. If you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your needs in parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in.

Luke 13: 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

After the scriptures: Leader: Hear what the Holy Spirit is telling God’s people. People: Thanks be to God.

TODAY Three-Choir Concert

“Songs from American Poets” will be the theme of a collaborative concert to be presented in our sanctuary today at 3:00 pm. The Singers’ Club of Cleveland, Forest Hill’s Chancel Choir, and the Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word will each perform settings of poems written by Americans, including Walt Whitman, e. e. cummings, and Emily Dickinson. The Singers’ Club is a male chorus whose history goes back to 1891. (Forest Hill’s Don Grube has been a member since 1977.) The Distinguished Gentlemen of Spoken Word is a group of Cleveland African-American young men who study the art of performance poetry, adding mime, movement and song. They made a widely-publicized visit to France last summer. An offering will be received, to be divided between Forest Hill Church Friends of Music and the Distinguished Gentlemen. A reception will follow the concert.
