COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

Nextdoor UpdateFC3 Exceeds 400 Members since January

Forest Creek III joined an on-line private social network called ‘Nextdoor’ in the fall of 2013 in order to streamline online communications and increase resident member engagement and awareness in neighborhood activities. We’re proud to announce that 62% of our 458 households are now enrolled and the number is growing every day!

WHAT IS NEXTDOOR:This community is where information is posted from the Board

of Directors and includes upcoming events, Crime and Safety information, and urgent alerts. This online community along with the official HOA website, www.fc3hoa.org, is the online forum to receive communication and information on events for the neighborhood.

HOW TO JOIN:Register by visiting www.NextDoor.com and entering your

address. It will find our community and ask you to verify your residency. Once you have done that, you are in and can control your notification settings.

Each person can send up to two postcards per month inviting neighbors to join.

Nextdoor has mobile apps available for iPhone and Android

ONLINE IMPRESSIONS:With a growing online community, it is important to

remember that when you post you are creating a persona that others will attribute to you when you meet in person. Consider writing posts, comments and conversations online, as you would treat an in-person conversation or conversation in the workplace. Please be considerate of your neighbors and put your best impression forward.

TIPS:When you post via the web, iPhone or android apps, you must

select if your post is to just Forest Creek III or also neighboring communities from the Choose Neighbors pull down.

For Crime & Safety, Classifieds, Free Items, it’s recommended you post to Forest Creek III and also neighboring communities.

For neighborhood specific posts like about upcoming events, pool conditions, HOA specific communication, please only post into Forest Creek III.

To send a post via email, send your post to [email protected]. For general usage or join questions please contact Shanna Claycamp, FCIII Nextdoor Lead at [email protected].

30 Minute Tortilla Soup

September means back to the daily grind. The lazy days of summer have been replaced with a hectic schedule of school and sports practice while the daylight hours get shorter and shorter. That’s why this month I chose a super healthy and hearty 30 minute recipe, guaranteed to fill the hungry bellies in your house and keep them going through the after dinner homework hours.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:• 1 Tbsp. olive oil + plus

additional to crisp tortillas• 2 garlic cloves, minced• 1 onion, diced• 2 poblano peppers, diced• salt and pepper to taste• 2 carrots, peeled/diced• 2 Tbsp. cumin• 2 tsp. coriander

• 15 oz. can fire roasted tomatoes• 18-20 oz. can crushed tomatoes• 16 oz. bag of frozen corn• 2 cans black beans, drained• 4 cups vegetable broth• 4 corn or flour tortillas• 1 avocado, diced• ¼ cup chopped cilantro• lime wedges

DIRECTIONS:In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion,

poblano peppers, garlic, salt and pepper. Cook until onion is translucent. Next, stir in the carrots, cumin and coriander and cook together for about 5 minutes. Lastly, add the corn, black beans, tomatoes and vegetable broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes. While your soup is simmering, preheat your oven to 400°F and cut your tortillas into thin strips. Place tortilla strips onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spray or drizzle enough olive oil to lightly coat the tortilla strips. Sprinkle on salt and give them a toss to coat. Place into oven and allow to crisp. Watch closely. Crisping happens fast, within 5-10 minutes. Once your soup is done, garnish with avocado, tortilla strips, cilantro and lime. A squeeze of fresh lime at the table really makes this soup! Hope you enjoy!

A FOCUS ON BACKPACK SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR FAMILYWear both straps: The use of one strap causes one side of the body

to bear the weight of the backpack. By using two shoulder straps, the weight of the backpack is evenly distributed. Wear the backpack over the strongest mid-back muscles. Pay close attention to the way the backpack is positioned on the back. It should rest evenly in the middle of the back. Shoulder straps should be adjusted to allow the child to put on and take off the backpack without difficulty and allow free movement of the arms. Straps should not be too loose, and the backpack should not extend below the low back.

Lighten the load: Keep the load at 10%-15% or less of the child’s body weight. Carry only those items that are required for the day. Organize the contents of the backpack by placing the heaviest items closest to the back. Some students have two sets of books, so as not to have to carry the heavy books to and from school.

Proper backpack usage: While a backpack is still one of the best ways to tote homework, an overloaded or improperly worn backpack gets a failing grade, according to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Improper backpack use can cause injury, especially to children with young, growing muscles and joints. Injury can occur when a child, in trying to adapt to a heavy load, uses harmful postures such as arching the back, leaning forward or, if only one strap is used, leaning to one side. According to physical

therapists, these postural adaptations can cause spinal compression and/or improper alignment, and may hamper the proper functioning of the disks between the vertebrae that provide a shock absorption. A too-heavy load also causes muscles and soft tissues of the back to work harder, leading to strain and fatigue. This leaves the back more vulnerable to injury. A heavy load may also cause stress or compression to the shoulders and arms. When nerves are compressed, the child may experience tingling or numbness in the arms.

What to look for in a backpack: Physical therapists recommend the following features when selecting a backpack: •Apaddedbacktoreducepressureonthebackandpreventthepack’s

contents from digging into the child’s back •Awaistbelttohelpdistributesomeoftheloadtothepelvis•Compressionstrapsonthesidesorbottomofthebackpackthat, when

tightened, compress the contents of the backpack and stabilize the articles •ReflectivematerialsothatthechildisvisibletodriversatnightThe results: Worn correctly and not overloaded, a backpack is supported

by some of the strongest muscles in the body: the back and abdominal muscles. These muscle groups work together to stabilize the trunk and hold the body in proper postural alignment.

For more information on backpack safety, visit the American Physical Therapy Association at www.apta. org.

aRound the Rock will be an entertaining look at restaurants within a 10-minute drive from FCIII to help you answer the all-important question “where do we eat tonight?” The important things in life; food, wine and music, are subject to our own

individual taste and this is but one man’s opinion... I look forward to your input as I decide my next stop.

aRound RocktheMONTHLY RESTAURANT REVIEWS BY LARRY BROOME

I hope you are enjoying the start of your fall! This is a great opportunity to try some new food (and drink). So, I have been asked why don’t you review some place you don’t like? Well, here it goes.

The place is Green Mesquite Barbecue in the Wal-Mart shopping center (off IH 35). Now maybe after a year of eating BBQ at Louis Mueller (Taylor), Snow’s (in Lexington), Franklin (Austin) and Opie’s (Spicewood) I am really becoming a Texas BBQ snob.

There seems to be something amiss with Green Mesquite from the time you walk in the door, as employees look uncomfortable and unsure of who should seat you. And it really doesn’t even smell like anything is being smoked, rather disconcerting. It also had an appearance of shabby.

Finally after being seated a few minutes a waiter approaches. I

am always concerned when you ask for a suggestion or a ‘what’s your specialty”, you are told everything is good. Usually this means that nothing rises to outstanding or in this case, even good.

After receiving our iced tea with a metallic aftertaste, indicating being there quite a while, I should have hit the door, before my initial premonition came true.

The brisket was more like chewy pot roast and the pork rib in a sickeningly sweet sauce had a just ‘okay’ pull. I think we kind of liked a side but forgot what it was by this point. And then we waited for the check, although the restaurant was half-empty at this point. As a businessperson waiting for a check drives me crazy. I would think after serving great food and providing great service you get the money, turn the table and start again.

Unfortunately, I cannot say that anything worked for Green Mesquite during this Saturday lunch.

BERMUDA GRASS SURVIVAL TIPS

Most of us in FC3 have Bermuda grass - a highly resilient but somewhat tricky grass to maintain, especially in the earlier stages of its lifecycle. In order to prevent those nasty winter weeds that we can end up spending all spring dealing with, here are a few preventative tips to use to get a jump on fall maintenance.

SEPTEMBER THROUGH NOVEMBERMowing: Bermuda grass should be mowed every 5 to 7 days

and less often when the lawn is drought stressed.Fertilizing: Apply no more than 0.5 pound of nitrogen per

thousand square feet in September or four to six weeks before the first expected frost. Apply lime during these months if recommended by soil tests.

Watering: Dormant Bermuda grass may still need to be watered periodically when dry, windy conditions occur for an extended period. Additionally, newly planted sod should be watered during this period to prevent desiccation.

Disease Control: Some diseases such as spring dead spot are active in the fall despite the fact that no symptoms are visible. If your lawn has a history of spring dead spot, fall applications of fungicides may be beneficial.

Weed Control: Apply pre-emergence or post-emergence herbicides as needed to control winter annual and perennial broadleaf weeds such as chickweed and henbit. Pre-emergence herbicides do not control existing perennial weeds. Apply post-emergence herbicides only when weeds are present. Do not apply herbicides designed to control annual bluegrass if the lawn is to be over-seeded with ryegrass.

Following a regular maintenance schedule will help your lawn to stay greener and more enjoyable longer into the fall!

Happy Gardening!
