Faculty Recital: Bernadene Blaha and Martin Chalifour with special guest Sergey Antonov Tuesday, October 13, 7:30 pm Alfred Newman Recital Hall Admission is free Thornton faculty Bernadene Blaha, piano, and Martin Chalifour, violin, are joined by guest cellist Sergey Antonov in a chamber program featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Haydn, and Arthur Honegger. past 25 years, the NMO event has premiered more than 125 compositions, often leading to professional commissions and international recognition. Paderewski Lecture-Recital: Musica Antiqua Polonica Sunday, October 18, 7:00 pm Alfred Newman Recital Hall Admission is free The Polish Music Center celebrates its 30th anniversary with a survey of rarely-heard Polish works from the late Renaissance and Baroque. The USC Thornton Baroque Sinfonia will be joined by violinist Stefan Plewniak, an expert on this period, and together they will weave an exquisite tapestry of music and history. Pepe Romero Masterclasses Monday, October 19, 7:00 p.m., USC Brain and Creativity Institute’s Joyce J. Cammilleri Hall Tuesday, October 20, 12:00 p.m., Simon Ramo Recital Hall Tuesday, October 20, 7:00 p.m., USC Brain and Creativity Institute’s Joyce J. Cammilleri Hall Admission is free Classical guitar master and Thornton faculty member Pepe Romero offers an up-close glimpse into his renowned artistry in three masterclasses. Romero is the second son of “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” the Romeros. His contributions to the field of classical guitar have inspired a number of distinguished composers to write works specifically for him, including Joaquín Rodrigo, Federico Moreno Torroba, Rev. Francisco de Madina, Lorenzo Palomo and Celedonio Romero. Pianist, Poet, and Composer: A Concert of Songs by Alan Smith Tuesday, October 20, 7:30 pm Alfred Newman Recital Hall Admission is free. International opera stars and distinguished musicians gather to celebrate the work of Alan Smith, chair of Keyboard Studies and director of Keyboard Collaborative Arts at Thornton. Smith will be joined by international opera star Stephanie Blythe, mezzo-soprano; Rod Gilfry, baritone, Thornton Vocal Arts faculty and USC alumnus; Diana Newman, soprano, Lyric Opera of Chicago Young Artist and Thornton alumna; and cellist Jonathan Dormand, current Artist Diploma student at Thornton. The musical works featured in this tribute, many of which were composed expressly for the performers, will include two West Coast premieres. This free event is co-presented by USC Thornton and Visions & Voices, USC’s arts and humanities initiative.
