Tie, BREWSTER (1-0) & MAHOPAC (1-0) – Impressive wins for both. Bears won at Pearl River with great second half, while the Indians blew out Fox Lane by 22 points.

NEWBURGH (0-1)– Goldbacks were ranked No. 2 in the HVSR preseason rankings so this might seem like a precipitous drop. But you have to go with performance and what the coaches say, and NFA gave up too many big plays in their 27-14 loss to Ione Prep and coach Bill Bianco was not happy with the effort.

HIGHLAND (1-0) – The Huskies looked sharp in their 31-22 win over archrival New Paltz. Quarterback Brandon Mack was poised and showed great leadership, and, oh yeah, passed for 273 yards. Biggest takeaway? Highland’s offensive line was solid.

RONDOUT (1-0) – The Ganders were Section Nine, Class B runnerups last season and there was some question coming into this season whether they could survive the loss of quarterback Keith Malak. Rondout looked pretty good with a 14-7 win over Class A Saugerties.

ROOSEVELT (1-0) – No matter how they’re playing, Kingston is always tough when it plays at Dietz Stadium. Roosevelt made it look easy. The Presidents controlled the game on the ground – big time. 53 rushes in 54 total plays. More impressive was winning the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

MARLBORO (0-1) – Perhaps Marlboro’s season-opening loss to Wallkill was surprising because of what we’ve come to expect from the three-time defending Section Nine, Class B champs. Breaking in all the new players might take a little longer than we thought.

LOURDES (1-0) – We didn’t quite know what to expect from the Warriors this year, and the first game, a Nanuet, was going to be tough. Here’s what we know now: quarterback Dean Rotger is still good, and the Warriors have a running game that’s going to make the passing attack even better. It all clicked in the 35-14 win.

WALLKILL (1-0) – Biggest leap so far as the Panthers went from No. 7 in the preseason to No. 3 after the 31-21 upset of Marlboro. Quarterback A.J. Dembroski had a strong varsity starting debut, and WR Nick Gomez is a big-time weapon. Another important, emotional game this week too when Wallkill plays Valley Central for The Helmet.

MILLBROOK (1-0) – The Blazers were the last team to open the 2014 season after having their game against Dover postponed from Saturday to Sunday. Didn’t matter. Millbrook ran up almost 500 yards rushing in a 48-14 victory.

JOHN JAY – The Patriots came into the season No. 3 in the HVSR Preseason Power Rankings and rated No. 1 in Section One. They leap to the top spot on the strength of n impressive 21-7 win at Arlington on Friday night, in which the Patriots scored two TDs in the span of 15 seconds.
