The importance of food
The ‘Need for Feed’ Think about some of the world events or
issues and how food may have played a part.
- world wars - famine - flood - drought
So, why is food so important?
1. Grow and repair body tissues2. Produce heat and energy3. Regulate body processes4. Protect us against diseases.
Our bodies need food in order to:
Food and Water......
Can anyone think of
any amazing survival stories
they may have
heard?
Our bodies cannot survive without Food and Water and so, are considered to be a BASIC PHYSICAL NEED.
Physical needs relate directly to body functions and include the provision of food, water, air, rest and shelter.
Has anyone heard of Maslow's ‘Hierarchy of Needs’?
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs...
What does this mean? So what he is saying is that before we
can have any success or satisfaction in any other part of our lives, we must first satisfy our physiological needs.
What does this mean to you? - think about how you feel when you are
hungry or tired
Through the Years!!! Prior to European Influence, what did the native
Australians eat? With the increase of migrants, development of
technology and the simple convenience of today, the diet of Australians is VERY different.
Research has shown that Australian obesity rates have doubled in the last 20 years. Around 47% of women and 63% of men are overweight or obese which can lead to a multitude of other health issues and diseases.
A staggering 25% of Australian children are overweight
How is it calculated? Our Body Mass Index is calculated to determine if we
are in a healthy weight range. BMI = Weight (Height x Height)
weight in kilograms, height in metres.....
So, for someone who was 85kg and 170cm tallBMI = 85 (1.7 x 1.7)
= 29.4
Calculate your own BMI...
