The President’s Corner

Welcome to another year of garden club fun!

I can hardly wait to see you all and to get started on a new year of garden experiences and fun times. We had the best year ever last year and now we are ready to top that. The past is the past and the future is before us.

You need to be at the first meeting on September 7 to pick up your new club yearbook, edited by Erin Angulo. This is a must! If you can’t be there, designate a friend to get yours for you. You can’t go months without your yearbook and directory.

You will be blown away when you see the new club website introduced on the big screen by Sharon LuVisi. The site will become your new Best Friend!

We will have a speaker, refreshments, a raffle and the usual exciting things going on. We have eight new members, so take the time to get acquainted with them and share all your news with them. We currently have 137 members.

I did a plant exchange this summer with Adrienne Coolidge. Hope you shared your plants with others, as well as your enthusiasm for gardening.

Welcome back…you’re gonna love it.

■ Ron Byrd, President

Garden Tour News

We hope that your summer has been full of color, glory, and happiness. Are you ready to help with the 2018 FGC Garden Tour on Saturday April 28th and Sunday April 29th? We need lots of volunteers to help make this a success. The Garden Selection Committee has been busy all summer looking at lovely Folsom gardens, and we think that you will like the lineup. Please put the FGC 2018 Garden Tour Kick Off Meeting on your calendar. We will meet at the Murer House on Thursday, September 14th @ 12:30PM for a potluck lunch, with the meeting starting at 1PM. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm, and of course, fabulous food for the potluck. Thanking you in advance for your support, Barbra McKenna and Jessica Hodge2nd VPs & Co-Chairs of the Garden Tour

June Dirt Gardener Event - Amador Flower Farm

folsomgarden.org Est. 1934 5

A beautiful drive in the country on a perfect summer day took us to this farm in Amador County’s wine country. Amador Flower Farm grows more than 1,200 varieties of day lilies and includes a gift shop, nursery and acres of demonstration gardens filled with day lilies, unusual perennials, and grasses.

We enjoyed a tram tour led by owner Jeanne Deaver through the gardens. In addition to viewing acres of beautiful plantings, we met their sheep and farm dogs too.

OWNER, JEANNE DEAVER TELLS US ABOUT THE FARM

TRAM RIDE! (JUST LIKE DISNEYLAND!)And we brought a potluck picnic lunch and enjoyed it under giant old oaks next to a pond with ducks and frogs.

FGC Scholarships

Our scholarship awardees are an amazing group. The Scholarship Committee provides us with updates from our past awardees. Hear what this ambitious bunch are up to, in their own words:

Zoryana Pope (2013-14 & 2014-15)

I just graduated from Humboldt State University in December with my B.S. degree in Environmental Protection and Management (Cum Laude honors :) ). I couldn't have done it without the amazing help and generosity from the Folsom Garden Club! I actually just accepted a job last week for Project Manager at a company in Rocklin, CA called ExcelChem Environmental Labs. I'm very excited! Thank you again (I couldn't possibly thank the Folsom Garden Club enough)!

Alicia Streetman (20115-16)

It is so very thoughtful of the Folsom Garden Club to keep in touch with its scholarship recipients. I was one of the 2015 recipients and continue to benefit from the opportunities the FGC scholarship helped open up to me. After completing my conservation ecology study abroad program at Stellenbosch University in South Africa (one of top the botanical biodiversity hotspots of the world), I returned home to finish my Forestry and Natural Resources BS at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I will be graduating this June and hope to work in Forest Ecology research. Last summer I worked for the US Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research station conducting research on Sierra mixed-conifer forests. We were able compare vegetative cover, tree health, tree density, and forest composition in stands that had recently burned or were overdue for a burn with historical forest structures. I also participated in stem-mapping efforts on historical plots. I hope to continue my career in this direction (so hopefully the hiring freeze on the USFS doesn't last too long). I again wish to thank FGC for their generosity, it truly has helped me achieve my educational goals. Hope all is well with the members.

James Fong (2015-16)

Thank you again for the Folsom Garden Club Scholarship. Since the last time I presented at the Folsom Garden Club Meeting in October, I have been keeping busy with vice presidencies in the Entomology Club and Botany Club at UC Davis. I have also continued my work at the Botanical Conservatory working on carnivorous plants as well as in the Ramirez Lab working on mechanisms to differentiate two different orchid bee species based on mandible morphologies. My current coursework include a greenhouse crop management class as well as a course in cellular biology and upper division writing. I plan to spend my spring break in Oregon to explore the diversity of plants, mushrooms, and insects. Spring quarter I will be taking an angiosperm systematics course and a forensic entomology class. I am excited! After graduation, I plan to find a job working with plants and/or insects. I hope all is well! Please send the club my best!

Frank Duffy (2012-13)

After Graduation from UC Davis, I was able to get a job immediately with Doug Halter at Halter-Encinas Enterprises in Ventura, Ca. I’m in love with my career and have a few of my first designs currently being built. I'd love to send you some pictures at the progress progresses. Along with the full time position with Doug, I’m am also an Assistant General Manager for the Hampton Inn by Hilton. Things have been really great for me since graduating and working for two amazing companies.

If there is every anything I can do for the Folsom Garden Club please let me know, I’d be happy to do what I can to help you guys since the club helped me in a time of need to get me where I am today. Thank you so much.

Grants Update —by Jennie Lewis, Grants Chair

We work hard to raise money; we award grants. What do we look at when we award grants each year? Here is an overview of the information that the Grants Committee considers as part of the award process.

A new grant cycle (2017-18) was initiated in August, with grant applications due Tuesday, October 27, 2017. The 2017-18 awards will be announced at the FGC’s November meeting.

The Grants Committee members apply established criteria against all applications to determine the awards. As an overriding guideline, the Club is committed to encouraging variety and balance in the kind, purpose, and size of grants given to nonprofit organizations within the City of Folsom.

Further, all grant projects must support the Club’s mission, as follows:

The mission of the FGC shall be to educate and foster relationships among people who have a love of horticulture,

and to promote beautification of the City of Folsom.

Sustainability of the proposed project is also considered, including qualified leadership, volunteers who are available to implement and continue a project, as well as the ability to provide updates at six and twelve months.

Finally, the requested award amount is assessed to determine if the cost estimates for the scope of the proposed project are reasonable and appropriate. If needed, adjustments are enacted. If the total of all grant requests exceeds the funding available, then priority is given to first time, or rare interval, applications for FGC funding.

The Committee looks forward to announcing the upcoming 2017-18 awards in November.

Our Affiliates

Have you ever looked at the list of Affiliations on the front page of the newsletter and wondered who these groups were and why we were affiliated with them? Over the course of this club year, the newsletter will explore our affiliates and learn more about them. You may be surprised at what these groups have to offer us.

The bureaucracy looks like this: National Garden Clubs, Inc. covers 50 states and divides them up into eight regions. We’re part of the Pacific Region which is comprised of California plus seven other states. California Garden Clubs, Inc., “CGCI” is divided into 28 districts. We’re in the Sacramento Valley River District, “SRVD,” which serves Sacramento, Solano, Sutter, and Yolo counties. SRVD has 17 clubs, including the Folsom Garden Club.

CGCI started in 1931, joining National Garden Clubs, Inc., Pacific Region at the same time. According to their website, CGCI is “the largest nonprofit, volunteer gardening organization in California with over 350 garden clubs, plant societies, affiliates and youth groups throughout the state representing more than 21,000 members.” They offer educational courses and materials, and support a wide range of environmental projects. Some projects you may already be familiar with, like Penny Pines, while others offer new opportunities, like the Rare Plant Treasure Hunt.

In future articles, we’ll learn a little more about our Affiliates.

The Benches Are Here!

At the September 2016 Business Meeting, we found out that the City of Folsom had removed a broken park bench from the Folsom Garden Club Park which is located on the corner of Natoma Street and Sibley Street. Embedded in the back of the bench was a plaque that read “Folsom Neighborhood Gardeners, 2001.” The City returned the part of the bench with the embedded plaque, and asked if we wanted to replace the bench with the requirements that, (1) we pay for the materials to make the concrete pad it sits on and (2) the replacement bench meets the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

Co-1st Vice President Denise Martinez worked on this project during the summer of 2016 with approval of the Board. A replacement bench was selected which included a four inch by eight inch granite plaque engraved with the words “Folsom Garden Club, Est. 1934.” The total cost of the Folsom Garden Club bench and pad was $850.

In addition, the Stefani family wished to donate another bench with a plaque in memory of Sandra Stefani, who had

been a club member since 2002. The City agreed to install a pad for the Stefani family’s bench for the cost of materials, another $100, bringing the total cost to the club to $950. At the September 2016 Business Meeting, members voted to purchase the replacement bench and to pay for the materials to install two concrete pads for a total cost of $950.

The wet winter delayed pouring the concrete pads, but finally the work was completed and the benches were installed this summer. The two benches are identical except for the plaques. Next time you're nearby, stop and admire our benches, and enjoy the Folsom Garden Club Park and our rose garden too.

What We Did On Our Summer Vacations We grew things, took photos, wrote poetry…ah summer!

One Little Black-eyed Susan --by Ron Byrd One little Black-eyed Susan wandered into my yard one day,I don’t know where she came from but I invited her to stay. She seemed so bright and sunny and she required little care,And everyone who saw her thought her beauty to be rare. Soon her roots spread deep, she fell asleep, flowers no longer grew,Then, after fall and winter’s silence, they all said “hello” anew. Now, during summer days she reigns as nature’s golden queen,When all the Black-eyed Susans bloom and make a garden scene. So, be mindful when small flowers may often come your way,For time will pass and soon you’ll have one large, beautiful bouquet.

The Last Word

Thank you Joyce Sheffield for your June Business Meeting photos and notes, and thanks to Sharon LuVisi for her sneak peek photo of our new website. And thanks to all of you who've contributed articles and photos to this issue.

We’re now on Facebook—Check us out and Like us: Folsom Garden Club

Last year, I ended the September newsletter by saying, “This is my first newsletter, ever, except for the one I put together in First Grade.” Over the course of the last year in which it has been my honor to be your Newsletter Editor, I’ve learned a lot and improved my newslettering skills at least a little. And I’ve been awestruck by the kindness and generosity of all of you—you've contributed so much to the newsletter and made my job so much easier. Thank you!

Please continue to contribute to the newsletter: send pictures of what's growing in your garden, that new tool you bought that just works wonders, or a gardening event that you'd like to share. How about trying your hand at writing or photography? Committee Chairs, we’d love to hear from you—tell us what you do for the club, and let us know when you need our help.

Your contributions to this newsletter are always welcome. I break out my Disco ball and do The Hustle around my iPad every time someone sends me something for the newsletter. Submissions for the October newsletter are due on September 23rd. You can email me (and I have a new email address) or text me.

"I have found, through years of practice, that people garden in order to make something grow; to interact with nature; to share, to find sanctuary, to heal, to honor the earth, to leave a mark.

Through gardening, we feel whole as we make our personal work of art upon our land."

—quote by Julie Moir Messervy, Design Studio (JMMDS)
