    ell into another

    year already.

    Christmas is now

    just a distant

memory for most of us. If like me,

you were lucky enough to have

your family close to you at this

    time, they have probably packed

up now and settled back into their

    Focus Towcester &

    Surrounding Villages is

up now and settled back into their

own routine and maybe missing us

as much as we are missing them!

So its back to earth with a bump,

but thats OK, as weve got lots

of things to look forward to and

some of them are all happening

in the next couple of months.

    Good old Valentines Day, do

    something special

    this year, and

    check out page

    17 onwards

    for some great

    places to eat

locally with your loved one. DO

    NOT forget Mothers Day. This

year it is the 18th March so dont

say you have not been warned.

    Plan something now dont leave

it until the last minute. Surely shes

worth more than a last minute

bunch of flowers from the petrol

    station!

    The Sudoku

    competition

    is on page

    47 this time

    so have a

    try at that.

    Also on page

    59, meet

    Ash our new gardening guru

who is going to be giving us

tips throughout the year for our

garden. See what he has to say

    about February and March!

The exciting news for me is that

the days will be staying lighter

    for longer from 25th March,

where we will all be putting our

    clocks forward an hour. Surely

that means Summer is on the way

and we can say goodbye to this

    horrid cold weather, brrrrrr..

    How to aim high

    for the future

    F

rom Brownies to ballet, chess to clay pigeon

shooting, the range of co-curricular activities at

independent schools can be vast and eclectic.

Why are these activities so highly valued?

No-one would dispute that children need to learn

about team spirit and that exercise and hobbies are

excellent ways to unwind from study. Independent

schools, however, place great importance on co-

    curricular activities. Why is this?

Co-curricular activities are a great confidence

builder, says Jonathan Whybrow, Headmaster of

Beachborough, a local independent school near

Brackley. Life is not just about exam results and

children at Beachborough achieve just as much

outside the classroom as within it. Our children are

valued for a whole range of gifts and talents, just as

    they are in adult life.

Clubs and activities give children a degree of

    independence

    that they wouldnt

    otherwise

    experience and also

    allow them to work

    with teachers outside

    the normal classroom

    disciplines, which fosters a

    fantastic sense of community

    at Beachborough.

The broad ranges of co-curricular activities are aimed

to encourage and nurture different personality types

and talents. Not everyone has the confidence to get

up on stage and perform individually, but they may feel

more comfortable as part of a choir or a musical band.

There is no doubt at Beachborough, that they

add a valuable balance to a very busy academic

    school life.

If you would like to find out more about

Beachborough, please contact the school on

01280 700071 or visit their website:

    the winning formula

    W

e are extremely proud of the Bosworth

maths team who recently won the

County Regional Final Day of the

    UKMT National maths competition.

Every year the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) holds

various maths competitions, this one the Senior Team

Maths Challenge is aimed at Year 11 - 13 students.

The UKMT is a registered charity whose aim is to

advance the education of children in mathematics.

Last academic year over 600,000 students from

4,000 schools took part in the UKs biggest national

    maths competition.

Twenty-three schools and colleges from the County got

through to the Regional Final Day of this competition

which took place at the University of Northampton.

The students competed in three rounds:

Group round: to answer 10 questions in 40 minutes.

The teams must decide on their own strategy, work in

pairs, as a group or individually.

Crossnumber: a mathematical crossword puzzle with

one pair from the team solving the across clues and

the other pair solving the down clues.

Mini-relay: members of the team have to answer

mathematical questions, but the information passed

from other members of the team is needed to solve

    them completely.

Every year there is extremely strong local competition

and Bosworth are very pleased to have won this

regional heat, their worthy opponents Oundle School

and Kings School Peterborough came joint second.

They are now through to the National Final which is to

be held in London on the 1st February 2012.

    To have and to hold,

    for richer, for poorer?

    T

he average 2011 wedding cost was estimated

to be around 18,605 which was slightly

down on the average wedding costs of 2010.

I wonder with the current climate if we can

expect to see the figures dropping again for 2012!

There is no minimum spend to make your day

beautiful in your own style. Wedding expectations are

    subjective to each individual couple.

    So todays Bride & Groom

have to be savvy about what

they are expected to pay for

    certain products and services.

Whats important to one couple might not necessarily

be important to another, therefore its essential that you

    get your priorities in order.

With a whopping 35% of the overall cost being spent

on the reception, (thats 6.5K on the average 2011

wedding cost) including the all important Wedding

Breakfast the cost can easily spiral out of control. If the

happy couple wanted to sacrifice such a huge guest

list the money could be allocated somewhere else that

may be more important to them. Lets face it when

did you last see Auntie Alice or Old Uncle Henry, and

more to the point do they even remember you?more to the point do they even remember you?

    DO YOU WANT YOUR DOG

    TO LOOK AND FEEL FANTASTIC?

    New rules for pets

    travelling outside the UK

    A

s you may (or may not!) have seen on

the news recently there have been some

significant changes to the rules associated

with pets travelling to and from other

countries under the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS). These

changes bring the UK into line with other EU member

    states.

In order for your dog, cat or ferret to travel to EU

and certain non-EU countries and back to the UK the

following rules must be adhered to.

    1) A microchip must be fitted to properly

    identify your pet.

    2) Rabies vaccination must be carried out after your

pet is microchipped. There is no longer a requirement

for pets to be blood sampled after vaccination.

However, a period of 21 days must pass before your

pet can travel. Booster vaccinations are then required

    every 3 years.

    Luxury Cattery

Our cattery located in Flore offers the most

modern cattery facility available within a

beautiful secluded rural setting. Your cats

health, safety and comfort is our priority and

our light spacious, heated chalets provide the

ideal environment for your cat. As a fab (feline

advisory board) listed cattery you are assured

that your cat will receive the best attention and

    care.

    Small Animal Boarding...

Is now available at the cattery. Guinea pigs

and bunnies can now be cared for in purpose

built hutches with grass runs available. Their

usual diet will be catered for with fresh fruit and

vegetables available daily. Hamster care is

also part of our service where you can bring

their own home and we will ensure they are

    cleaned and exercised regularly.

    3) An EU pet

    passport is issued.

    4) Before returning to

    the UK all dogs must

    be treated with a

    product effective against

    tapeworm. The product

    must be administered by

    a vet 24-120 hours (1-5

days) before your dog checks in for its journey to the

UK. This is not a requirement for dogs travelling from

Finland, Ireland or Malta. Previously animals were

required to be treated for ticks prior to travel to the UK.

This is no longer a requirement but it is recommended

to treat your pet to prevent infections that are spread

    by ticks.

    5) Your pet must travel via an approved route with an

approved transport company into the UK.

For further information (including requirements for travel

from non-EU countries) please visit the DEFRA website.

    Health, Beauty & Fitness

    Stay injury

    free in 2012!

    S

pring time is a busy time for BACK

at EASE as New Years resolutions

    to exercise begin. Sudden

    increases in exercise or twists

and turns which our bodies arent used

    to can unfortunately cause problems.

As an Osteopath and Clinical Pilates

instructor, I treat all kinds of injuries from back

strains to shoulder problems and help patients with

rehabilitation to get back to their chosen sport.

5 golden rules for staying injury free as you exercise:

    1) Take the time to warm up. This increases blood flow

to muscles and lubricates joints before you

    place demand on them.

    2) Have some form of core training incorporated into

your exercise to help prevent back problems and

    improve your performance.

    3) If you are losing technique because of fatigue or

pain, take a break before something gets injured.

    4) Look after yourself after exercise- it is normal to feel

a little muscle soreness after exercise. Try a warm

bath to relax sore muscles and leave enough time

    between workouts to recover.

    5) Dont pretend that injuries will magically disappear

because you dont want to stop exercising. Weve

all done it! But they usually dont and you may be

    making things worse.

If something is painful or repeatedly niggling you as

you exercise then seek professional help from your

GP or another healthcare professional such as an

Osteopath, Physiotherapist or Chiropractor. This will

ultimately help you get back exercising as soon as

possible and back on track for 2012.

    The Juniper House Care

    Home Open Weekend

    J

uniper House Care Home in Candleford Close

is busy preparing for an open weekend on

3rd and 4th March. The open weekend is an

opportunity for both the local community and

prospective residents to view the premium facilities and

care options the new Brackley home has to offer.

The home has already hosted events including a

naming ceremony and carols by candlelight for local

residents who have watched the development take

shape. Juniper House has sponsored a calendar

supporting the local high street and launched this

event with local traders and councillors in January.

A campaign was also held to nominate local heroes

who will officially open the home in February.

Jane Tombleson, General Manager at Juniper House,

said: I have been delighted by the positive feedback

regarding the home and am keen to welcome our

first residents. My team and I are looking forward

to developing the home into a welcoming, safe

and person centred environment for residents. It is

important to create a feeling of community within our

home which mirrors the links we are forming with the

wider community. We really appreciate the huge level

of support we've had from our neighbours and hope

many will join us for our open weekend.

Over the last couple of months people have been

keen to look around the information suite which is

open every day including weekends from 10am

to 4pm. The information suite gives a flavour of

what Juniper House will be offering and the open

weekend will enable the community to see the

finished home and meet the team who will be

responsible the care and well being of our residents.

Juniper House offers a welcoming environment.

    An independent guide to

    M

ore and more families are finding

themselves in a difficult position, having

to make quick decisions on something

which they often have little or no

knowledge. Help is now closer than you thought,

    writes Jane Harris.

My Care My Home offers personalized impartial

guidance for those who need help and advice on

every aspect of finding and funding the care that is

    correct for them.

The fact is, for anyone with assets over the threshold

there is little or no help available. This time for many

is very emotional and daunting, trying to sort things

out. Most really worry, and end up feeling at their

wits end. Our care advisors are highly trained care

professionals, who are now here to help such families.

Their advice is impartial and importantly FREE.

The free advice service helps people to make fully

informed decisions on what care a person needs

and where to get it. This is regardless of whether the

care needed is at home or elsewhere and covers

advice on reliable funding options and ways to make

peoples assets/properties work better for them. Last

year alone over 50,000 people sold their homes to

pay for their care. Its important people realise this is

not the only option available to them. My Care My

Home advisors offer impartial advice covering all

providers of care and the services they offer. Not only

this, your dedicated advisor will stay in contact until

you are content that you and your loved ones are

happy with the choices you have made.

Please contact My Care My Home on Freephone

0800 731 8470 from this call, you will receive a

There are two types of Junior ISA, a Cash

    (Stocks & Shares Junior ISA).

    A new Junior ISA

    is now available

    M

ost of us have become accustomed

to investing in ISAs since they were

launched on the 6 April 1999. They

offer valuable tax breaks in that there is

no tax on any interest earned or any Capital Gains

Tax and no further tax is due on dividend income.

From the 1 November 2011 the new Junior ISA was

launched which will enable any child born on or after

the 3 January 2011 and any child under 18 years

of age born before September 2002 to contribute

3,600 per annum. Parents, Grandparents, friends

and anyone else with an interest in the childs financial

future can contribute to their Junior ISA provided the

total amount is no more than the annual limit.

    There are two types of

    Junior ISA, a Cash Junior

    ISA and an Investment

    Junior ISA (Stocks & Shares

    Junior ISA). Each child will

be able to hold one of

    each account, with different

    providers should they wish, but

the total combined investment allowance between the

two accounts remains at 3,600 per tax year.

With regards to the investment flexibility, you are able

to invest in a full range of funds similar to a normal

ISA until the child reaches the age of 18 when they

legally become entitled to the monies. For smaller

gifts this could be useful to help pay for University

fees, purchase their first car or to get their foot on the

property ladder. Either way we feel that Junior ISAs

will become a key cornerstone of planning for the

    younger generation.

    if you are cleaning

    your carpets or rugs

    enough?Or toomuch?

    Who To Call For Profes-

    sional Carpet Cleaning?

Eco Clean is a local family

    run, professional and trusted

    company that guarantees the

    most thorough clean with spe-

    cialist Eco-Friendly Equip-

    ment and cleaning solutions.

    Using the latest drying tech-

    nology means carpets are usu-

    ally dry within 1-2 hours.

    Youve probably heard

Wait as long as you can

    before you clean your

    carpet... or Once youve

    cleaned your carpet, its

    never the same...

    But heres the thing, these

    widely used comments have

    stemmed from unfortunate

    encounters with uninformed

cleaners that have left the car-

pet with an overload of de-

    tergent residue.

The good news is that a

    properly cleaned carpet will

not re-soil as quickly and will

    actually last longer. Why?

    Because damaging soils are re-

    moved with effective cleaning.

Soil that is not removed by

    vacuuming, cuts the carpet fi-

bres as the carpet is being

    walked on.

A clean carpet is a healthy

carpet not to mention that a

carpet that is not cleaned on

a regular basis is an unhealthy

carpet. Carpet is like a sink.

    It collects soils, pollens, in-

    secticides, etc. that gets

tracked in or blown in from

    the outdoors. This creates

    and unhealthy indoor envi-

    ronment.

    What About My Rugs?

    And finally, a 9 x 12 Orien-

tal Rug can hold up to an as-

    tonishing 40 kilograms of

    soil without looking dirty!
