Nikon SLR camera sys tems.

Angular veloci ty sensors measure cameramovement, calculate the amount of compensationrequired, and the VR lens unit instantly adjustsposition to offset camera shake. Nikon’s exclusive

VR system provides the ability to shootat shutter speeds as much as

three steps slower withoutblurring the image, whilealso providing a smootherimage on the LCD monitor

that aids composi t ion.

The result is sharper whenshooting in low light, when taking advantage ofthe reach of the 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens, or whenreaching farther with an optional TelephotoConverter lens.

ANTI-SHAKE MODEA turn of the Mode dial activates High ISO andBSS (Best Shot Selector) in addition to VR (VibrationReduction), automatically sets the optimal ISO forsteady results, and selects the sharpest image fromup to ten sequential shots.

ISO 3200 CAPABILITY EXTENDS SHOOTING INLOW LIGHT

Extended light sensitivity range ofISO 64 to ISO 3200* and thenew image-processing engine’sability to preserve high imagequality at high ISO settings

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

In this sixth part of a series of techniques, Steven Yee shall sharewith you the tips on how to make use of shadow to createinteresting images. A travel photographer and photographyinstructor, Steven Yee conducts the Nikon D40/D40x, D70sand D80 workshop monthly at The Photographic Societyof Singapore. More of his works can be found onwww.stevenyeephotography.com and www.discovernikon.com

THE FUNNIEST THING ABOUT SHADOW IS THE WAY HE LIKESTO GROW -

Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow; For he sometimes shoots up taller like a rubber ball,And he sometimes gets so little that there’s none of him at all.

Stevenson, Robert Louis (1850–1894).  A Child’s Garden of Verses and Underwoods

Shadow come and go in a fleeting moment. Weencounter shadow everyday and everywhere.Sometimes it is very obvious, sometimes it is not.Sometimes it is long, sometimes it disappears. Most often, many people simply walk away withoutnoticing how shadow can help create an interestingphotograph.

There are no special lenses needed to capture theshadow. The COOLPIX with its Program mode isable to do the job well. But of course, the DigitalSLRs provide the photographers with more optionsto play with, such as the higher range of ISO andwider range of aperture.

Your main problem would probably be camerashake due to shutter speed slower than 1/(focallength). In this case, you may have to considerusing a higher ISO and a bigger aperture to getyou a faster shutter speed to minimize camerashake.

The below shall serve as a useful guide to aid youin the search for shadow.

The ingredients for shadow:

☛ The best time to get good natural shadowwill be early morning or late evening on asunny and non cloudy day. The quality oflight and shadow is at its optimum duringthis period.

☛ Shadow is longer early in the morning orlate in the afternoon.

☛ Shadow from artificial light will be great ifthe l igh t source emi t s s t rong l igh t .Sounds like common sense but spotting suchopportunities is not easy even though it canbe found everywhere. The Art of Seeing!

☛ The main subject must have distinct outlinesso that the shadow will be obvious. Avoidgroup of subjects or else the shadow will justbecome one big black area with no distinctshape.

With the above in mind, you can use this techniqueand tips in your quest to catch the lurking shadow.

Center weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/180s, Aperture f3.8, D2X,18-200mm DX lensWhile checking out at a hotel lobby in China, one of the hotel staff walked in and I immediately shot about ten pictures, out of which I canchoose one or two. Every picture is different, such as the hand and legs movement. No harm shooting more, as opportunities do not repeat

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/320s, Aperture f3.5, D2X, 18-200mm DX lensWhile walking towards the gate to board the plane, the strong light shines into the waiting area. I anticipated some good photo opportunities and took out mycamera. The long shadow shows that the shot was taken very early in the morning. I waited for a minute for someone to walk past the chairs in the waiting areaand I fired away. It worked well to have the person as a subject. It is good to have a camera all the time.

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO125, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f4, D2X, 12-24mm lensThe shadow reveals the shape of the windows of a domestic airport in Myanmar. Fortunately, a kid walked out and became my main subject. As usual, took aseries of shots to choose from as he walked towards me.

Centre weighted metering, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f5.6, D70, 18-70mmI was in an alley in one of the villages in Lijiang, China. The architecture is interesting and the older people there wear traditional costumes. Opportunity camewhen the strong sunlight created the shadow of the roof on the wall. It formed an interesting graphic image with the lady as the subject.

Centre Weighted metering, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f4, D2X, 18-70mmUpon touch down in Bagan, Myanmar, we made a dash for this shot to catch the early morning light. We were fortunate that we were not late and the shadowis relatively long. We cannot afford to wait for a candid subject to walk in as the shadow becomes shorter quickly as time flies. I asked my guide to ask the foodseller near us to pose for us.

Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO500, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/320s, Aperture f9, D2X, 18-70mmWhile on a bus, we passed by a slip road and the noon sun created a shadow of the overhead bridge on the road. Graphically, it looks liketwo “Cs”. A bicyclist cycled past and I fired a few shots.

Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO500, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/320s, Aperture f8.5, D2X, 18-200mm DX lensWe were walking along a street in Pushkar, India in the late afternoon. The long shadows looked interesting and I shot this “group photo”. You can guess whichshadow is mine. Third from left.

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO250, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/640s, Aperture f4.5, D2X, 18-200mm DX lensAs it approached noon as shown in this picture, the shadow became very much shorter and the quality of light is not very good. The harsh lighting resulted insevere “hotspot” and the “glaring” floor is something which we should try to avoid. Details on the floor are lost.

Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/320s, Aperture f8.5, D2H, 18-70mm DX lensThe shadow resulted in interesting shapes on the wall, and created something like a framing effect. The couple became my main subject.

Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f5.6, D70, 18-70mmThe sun was setting. I was in front of a Tibetan house with the door closed. The sun created very good shadows of the tree branches on the white coloured wall.I asked my guide whom I requested to be in traditional Tibetan costume to be my model and it worked well.

Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO320, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/3200s, Aperture f5, D2X, 18-200mm DX lensTwo people or four people? The early morning light created the shadow of the two people on the wall as we walked up the slope of the Potala Palace, Tibet.Oxygen is very thin there and it was sure not an easy walk.

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO800, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/5000s, Aperture f5.6, D2X, 18-70mm ED lensWhy did the chicken cross the road? The bus was moving at high speed along an expressway when the mother hen walked onto the road with her charges. Thebus has to do a jam break white I fired a few shots.

COMING UP NEXT...Coming up in the next issue, Steven Yee shallshare with you on how to get great shots usingbacklighting. He shall talk about the appropriatesubject matter, background and the execution ofthe technique. Look out for it.

Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO1600, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1s, Aperture f2.8, D2X, 10.5mm DX lensAfter a sumptuous dinner, we waited for the bus to pick us up. The street was very dark and a car headlamp suddenly shone in our direction with the two menwalking away from us. There was no time to setup a tripod. I set my ISO at 1600, use the wide angle fisheye and fired rapidly. I think I shot almost 8 shots handheldand somehow two or three appeared quite well with no camera shake, at 1s shutter speed.

Centre weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/125s, Aperture f5.3, D2X, 12-24mm DX lensGroup photograph of myself and my students, we stood in a line in the midst of the setting sun.

3-D Matrix metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/500s, Aperture f4, D2X, 12-24mm DX lensI got tired of shooting the ancient ruins of an old city in Xinjiang. The setting sun emitted a very strong orange light which made the place looked so good. I spottedthis angle where I can shoot my shadow.

Aside from engaging in the process of photography, she also believes that photographers need to be savvy inmarketing the art of photography, and to constantlycommunicate with viewers in order to reach a commonground. Gwen values individual expression in the creativefield. She feels that it is crucial to strike a balance betweencommercial assignments and personal works so that the joyof photography will not burn out. In 2005, she decided toset up a photography collective known as The Meeting Pointto share ideas among photographers. Today, The MeetingPoint serves as a platform for photographers and potentialclients to meet and bounce creative ideas off each other. For the love of the art, she hopes that there will be greaterinteraction among photographers in Singapore as well asin the region. Gwen Lee's love affair with the camera started at 14 whenshe discovered a radical new meaning to the phrase “lookingat the world through tinted lenses” (amongst other excitingparaphernalia). Since then, Gwen has tumbled down rabbitahole into the Wonderland of silver halides. Her curiosity toexplore and to share her thoughts made photography theperfect medium in her life. In 2005, Gwen emerged intothe light a full-time photographer.

Social issues are WRIT LARGE in Gwen’s vocabulary asphotography becomes her visual analogue of the proverbialsoapbox harangue. Amongst her visual polemics deliveredfrom that personal pulpit is “Spirits”, a series that slices theunderbelly of Geylang sleaze to reveal a portrait study byturns both exuberantly transient and lingeringly nostalgic.Using old school method of transparency films and reversedprocessing, Geylang emerges in all her saturated blurredglory to underscore the ephemeral ethos of a nameless andfaceless throng that haunt her. Her personal long termprojects include the photo documentation of Singapore 70'sthrough the exploration of second generation families holdingto trades passed on by their parents. Being restless with aninsatiable desire to explore, she traveled to Tibet three times, and is always contemplating where the next destination is.

Commercially, she covers a range of photography genresfrom editorial, corporate, sports, reportage to travel. In2005, she collaborated with three travel mates to showcasetheir travelogue of Tibet in her first group exhibition, Tibet:Through the Eyes of Four Travellers. In February 2006,Gwen held her first solo exhibition, Travel Light: Storiesfrom Asia, which showcased 60 images taken during herAsia backpacking trips over the last six years, at the OrchardLibrary and Woodlands Regional Library. In July 2006, sheexhibited in the Shooting Home 2005 Reunion exhibitionorganised by Objectifs. In early 2007, together with 2 other
