IntroductionThe background and reason for this final major project

Page 7: Fmp journal

Every year Anglia Ruskin and The Cambridge School of Art holds a degree show, this requires an identity for publicity which is designed by final year graphic design students. This year, this job is being under-taken by myself and one of my best friends Elliot Walker. I’ve absolutely loved my time on the course and being a part of the art school which has influ-enced my reasons for wanting to create the publicity this year. Previous years have been well designed, but now is the right time to try and move the degree show forward and push the concepts. Our aim is to create a publicity that can truly represent the passion and creativity of our students from all courses, along-side the feel of our art school. These points were set out, identified and described within my project proposal and included my question to keep focused;

“How can I find new and challenging ways to design the degree show publicity that takes the show in a

new direction for the future?”

What?

Why?

How?

The Cambridge School of Art Degree Show happens annually and graphic design students are called upon to undertake this role. This is a chance for students to showcase their abilities and final major projects, and is why it is important for the publicity to encourage people to visit. Due to the nature of the show, poten-tial employers along with friends and family will be attending for all nine courses within the art school.

Being a passionate student about the success of the art school, I feel it is now time to push the bounda-ries of the show and what is expected for publicity. Our art school deserves a higher reputation than it has. This is why it is important to explore new directions and find better ways to not only promote the art school and compete with other schools, but to fully represent our range of creative students.

Before starting to design the publicity, I will under-take research that looks at previous degree shows from a variety of art schools throughout the coun-try, concentrating on London based schools in particular. Using this research to inform my work, I will build a new direction for the art school to answer our brief. Alongside answering our brief, the designs will challenge and go beyond this in order to offer something new to the school.

Page 9: Fmp journal

Who?

If?

It is important to recognise who the show is aimed at and who I will be representing. The graduating students are key here as they are the heart of the art school and the show is for them to present them-selves and their work. However, the show opens up opportunities to meet gatekeepers and potential employers which means the publicity needs to attract them and make them want to attend the degree show.

If the publicity is a success this will become a big part of my portfolio I can professionally present and talk about with passion and excitement. The work will not only display my design skills, but it will also show I am able to work in a team and answer live briefs. This helps extend my portfolio and poten-tially open up gatekeepers for a commercial route which I am interested in taking within the Industry.

As a design student it is important to have our own design inspirations and interests outside of university and this section will showcase some of mine. Included is a selection of work from a few of my own personal favourite designers that I have either come across through research within projects, or been introduced to them through other peoples recommendations.

Also included are some design studios that I’ve been in contact with or again come across through research or projects they have completed which have been shown on design blogs or websites. As this is my final major project, I felt it was important to document some background information that wasn’t directly linked to my final project but could influence some design decisions and directions I could take. Being able to document this also forms part of a keep sake and is something to look back on in years to come when wanting to remember this final project.

I was first introduced to Jason Munns work when I was at college, I had a poster project to complete and I came across his work through some research. What intrigues me most about his posters is how clever the designs are, as each poster usually has more than one meaning. The posters are designed mainly for bands or songs including two of my favourite artists ‘Bastille’ and ‘Flight of The Conchords’. They are so

clean cut with good use of typography and colours amongst having the extra meanings within the graph-ics. A further range of examples are shown above, each design I’ve always felt to be confident and some what witty at the same time. For example, The Postal Service shows an envelope to represent the name but the fold is designed to look like a mouth, symbolising the second meaning within the poster.

Not only do I completely admire the work of Jessica Hische online, I also have two of her prints from the Alphabird collection which are outstanding. Her work with typography is beautiful and the standard of her work I believe has to be one of a kind. The intricate details of her letter forms, amongst the use of thick and thin strokes, including the decorations are showcased above from a set of book covers that she designed. A few examples of her work which are my favourite, are shown on the following few pages.

I first discovered the work of Sarah Hyndman when I was researching for an essay on the effects that typography have on us. Her work investigates the meaning behind choosing a typeface and how we perceive them. Her talks are informative and fun including food made from different typefaces which forms part of her experiments. Some examples are shown on the page across and below. Type Tasting is the name that Sarah uses for her research and has brought out two books that present the results from her research and investigations. These include areas of discussion around how designers see typefaces differently to non-designers, do different typefaces have different uses along with different personalties and does the use of typefaces influence what we buy.

A project in my second year designing a set of books and brand guidelines led me to be introduced to the work of Astrid Stavro. Her knowledge along with understanding of not only design but use of typogra-phy is incredibly extensive. I’ve always found her work to be very confident, challenging and bright, with always a good solid use of different typefaces. This is always something I’ve felt that my design lacks as a student and seeing her design work and reading her

books has influenced and informed me. My favourite project is the collection of essay books which are shown on the next page. It was the first piece of work that I had seen of hers and I fell in love with them. The use of typography, grids and colour allow each book to be visually different but they still remain as a set and show continuity throughout. A few more of my favourite projects Astrid has designed are shown across the page, above and on the following pages.

There were a mixture of reasons as to how I found Anthony’s work, one was mainly due to research in a second year letterpress project and the second, was accidentally stumbling across a book of his at the V&A. There was something so refreshing for me when looking at his work, the colours were always some-thing that stood out and the statements he wrote always seemed to resonate with me. This was how I

managed to stumble across his book and recognise it from some research I had previously undertaken. The book I Like It What Is It? Is full of statements and quotes all designed like examples shown above. Anthony uses letterpress techniques to achieve these outcomes, which is how I found his work when using letterpress type myself. I think he brings a new look and feel to using letterpress techniques in this way.

At the beginning of every project there is always research that needs to take place to make sure that the brief is being met to its full potential and answered correctly. One of the biggest tasks that I wanted to achieve was to really represent the art school and the feel that it has. The school has nine different art courses and although not all can be successfully represented in just one poster creatively, its inter-esting to see how other schools have been able to do this with different forms of media and concepts.

From all the research that was undertaken, I was able to see how other universities successfully designed their publicity which is effective, creative and clever. This helped form a base of research to begin as I was able to see what standard of design was needed and how it is has been previously implemented. From my project proposal, I wanted to design an identity that would compete with other universities and help to promote our art school successfully for the future.

Here is an example of some posters for publicity that were created and designed by Marta Gawin for a street art festival. What stood out to me before I knew this was designed for a festival, was the colour and structure, It grabs your attention right from the start. Even when you don’t know what the poster is for, it is intriguing and this is the impact that we need to create for the degree show posters. The use

of typography is strong throughout and the colour combinations confident. The posters are exactly the same throughout the set structure wise but each have their own colour scheme which works well for the set. For the degree show this year, it would be an idea if a concept we created allowed us to create a set of posters in this way. The following pages demonstrate how the concept was applied for the whole publicity.

Norwich University of the ArtsDegree Show 2011 & 2013www.behance.net/gallery/1678298/NUCA-Degree-Show-Poster

An idea that is a recurring theme throughout degree show posters is using items to create the posters. These items that were used related to all aspects of design courses, such as paper and pencils but they took this a step further by using items students use, such as a set of headphones. It is an effective way to represent all courses but its something that has been done before and been done well. Another route that could be taken, is to create something that shocks the audience or is walking on a fine line. The second example above certainly does this with the tag line “some don’t make the cut”. I don’t think this is effec-tive in the correct way for our publicity - its too risky.

Page 35: Fmp journal

35

The University of BrightonGraduate show & open day

http://cargocollective.com/jamieeke/Degree-Show-Poster

Continuing the theme from using items to create the poster, Brighton have done the same thing as Norwich using this idea and constructing a letter. Again it is effective and does represent every course but its quite obvious and the more I see this being done the more I’d like to move away from this. On their open day poster however, this does move away from the usual items and uses building bricks and Lego. Having this sets the scene and gives you a feel-ing that if you go to the university you will be build-ing your career with them. The typography again is strong and represents the university digitally as well as allowing students to be creative off the computer.

Rhode Island School of DesignGraduate Showwww.vivianejalil.com

These two posters above from Rhode Island School of Design stood out to me because they had just used their initials and kept the poster quite simple but effective. The posters really remind me of plastic moulds where as a child you can pull out the plastic shape and build something from it. This perhaps is a key part of the two posters so people think that their students break the mould and are different to other students graduating from various other schools. Having a theme that represents our students is some-thing that we would like to achieve and include in our publicity so we can stand out to potential employers.

Rhode Island School of DesignGraduate & Thesis Show

www.risd-id.orgContinuing to look at designs from Rhode Island School of Design are two different examples below. These again have good sue of typography and for the thesis show have cleverly designed this in a witty way. The graduate show uses this idea breaking up the letters and allowing them to look more like stencils, these can be difficult to read at times but the layout and colours are quite successful. From all these examples its clear that concept, colour, structure and form all need to work together to create a message.

Kingston University have been very clever with some degree show publicity by using a play on words. _ing for a name doesn’t sound to begin with something that could work, but once placed with words such as designing, coming, thinking and presenting this really starts to come together. Some examples of their invi-tations are above and work incredibly well due to the play on the words. The designs have strong use of typography and are confident and bold. An idea like this hasn’t been done for The Cambridge School of Art and could be a route to take if we found a word.

Page 39: Fmp journal

39

Bournemouth have created some clean invitations for their show called Engage. This does work more of a buzz word but it talks to the audience on some degree and shows their students are engaged. The invitation used a dye cut which then shows through the colour that is underneath. The use typography within this works really well when the letters from engage are broken apart. This does there for make you look at the invite in more detail and to a point actually engage with it because you are able to see visibly the different layers and colours of the word engage.

Pilot Project 1Names for the 2016 Degree Show

Page 47: Fmp journal

47

Our very first pilot project was to try and come up with a list of potential names that this years degree show could be called. This was far harder than we first imagined because the words needed to resonate with us and have some meaning to them rather than just random words. To begin with, we did look at and try to think of words that were related to design, our course, the art school and the students, yet this still wasn’t particularly successful.

There were words that could be potential degree show names but perhaps wasn’t going to take our degree show anywhere it hadn’t been before previ-ously, and of course this is something we wanted to change. I think once the obvious names were out of our systems we found ourselves thinking more practically and more unusually than before. We started to find some themes that could be developed to more than just a word, for example looking at old vinyl albums and lyrics from songs that were not very obviously a degree show name, but would intrigue the audience to hopefully come and visit our art school and all our students.

The first page of names were thought of in week one and are the most unsuccessful of them all because they are too obvious and don’t fully represent the art school. The second and third page were ones that developed and occurred throughout the following weeks until our presentation of concepts. These did started to become more interesting and less appren-tice like as such, they were more interesting and talked to the audience. This was something that we had set out to achieve as previously we haven’t had a name we felt that really speaks to all our audience.

Previous names that were used we thought sounded more like a buzz word and we hoped to avoid this for our show – onwards and upwards! The names that we are taking forward to experiment with and try to develop are going to be, ‘Keep your electric eye one me’, The Climax, Momentum, Transition, Final Final Final, Overture and Vista. These however, are likely to change throughout and act as a starting point for us. We have potential names, the next stage is to find potential designs that work for the show.

Pilot Project 2Experimenting with coloured inks

Page 53: Fmp journal

53Pilot Project 2

Our second pilot project was to spend some time in the letterpress and printing room, we didn’t use the type to create different textures but used the rollers and inks instead. We wanted to concentrate more on textures and colours rather than type, this was mainly due to a couple of reasons. Firstly, we had a whole list of names and non of which really at this point came to a conclusion to use, and secondly, moving away from the computer and experiment-ing could have helped open up several new direc-tions for concepts that were not computer based.

We had a variety of different coloured inks and a collection of paper which we used. It was good fun and nice to go back down to the print room but the prints were probably not as successful as we wanted. We thought perhaps a good route would be to physically create a textured back-ground that could be used and was hoping it could fit with a concept or a thought that could be developed for a concept. Either way, the prints were a good exercise but were not to be used.

Page 57: Fmp journal

57Pilot Project 3

Our third pilot project was similar to our second, but instead we used coloured paints which were acrylic to try and create textures. We didn’t always use paper this time we used acetate because it was transparent. This allowed us to visually layer the different prints in the hope of creating something new for a concept. We went strategically through many colour schemes and tried to experiment with some brighter colour schemes and then some that used paler colours to try and see how these contrast with each other.

This experiment was really fun as we splattered the paint randomly for some experiments and others we dripped paint at the top and let it run down naturally. Every drop of paint we had was either being splat-tered or dripped onto a plastic transparent board, which afterwards we pressed paper and acetate on to get a print. Each print is different and individual because you can’t get the same effect twice like you would be able to on screen, but personally I think that’s what makes a print. All experimented prints are documented over the next few pages.

Electric EyeProject development work weeks 1–6

Page 63: Fmp journal

63

This concept was one of the first that appeared after week one which I was able to work on closely throughout the first six weeks. This section here showcases the ups and downs, designs and rede-signs and plenty of name changes that were involved through the development of this concept. At the very beginning of week two when we started to get more abstract names, some of these came from albums and songs. I thought that as David Bowie had recently past away and was a big figure in the arts, this could be a potential route to go down.

It needed to be delicately addressed because it doesn’t act as a tribute, it is more of a reference and influence and this needed to be clear from the start. It wasn’t apparent when discussing names how this concept would work. We wanted it designed in a way that, if you were a fan of David Bowie you would understand and get the links, but if you wasn’t a fan, you would still be intrigued by the design and name. To get this balance deemed hard at first, but through slight references to him and his costumes (particularly from the Ziggy Stardust era) I was able to make a start on the direction the design would take.

Electric Eye Weeks 1 – 6

Page 64: Fmp journal

Final Major Project64

As a starting point from the names we had found, I thought looking perhaps at David Bowie outfits and costumes would be a less obvious, and more abstract start. The images across the page showcase some of the most remembered and well known outfits he had worn throughout his time. In particular the black and white outfit with its mirroring pattern on each leg was a real starting point to try and develop something from this that could relate to David Bowie.

I saw these shapes as a real opportunity to develop further into some patterns that would show influences from David Bowie but not be as a direct copy. I also looked at his album covers along side the costumes to try and get a sense of understanding, visually and emotionally to how he projected himself. I wanted to make sure that the patterns I created had the same feel that he did, full of energy, bright, intriguing and pushed the boundaries. Even though it isn’t a tribute I wanted to make sure that these links subtly remain.

69

Developing the patterns from the images that I had of David Bowie, resulted in them being cut up into nine with the thought of helping to represent nine courses. The struggle at this point was attempting to get the text and patterns to work together which as it stood, was not working successfully. The background wasn’t looking very good in black, the text did not work in the orange colour and the pattern was too simple. Bringing this forward, we tried to add some new colours which were red, pink and green, prob-ably some a little too closely linked to David Bowie.

The screen shots to the left show this development of the designs and the full use of these colours. Upon reflection, breaking the patterns up into nine squares may not have been the correct solution but from this point forward the colours and patterns needed to evolve further. They were to simple without the intricate detail and quality that was needed and expected for the degree show. The colours needed to be ‘electric’ as such and really represent and show the influences that we have had from David Bowie and his costumes. This doesn’t however, mean that moving forward we should be creating patterns or colours that directly and obviously link to Bowie, we need to develop them and make them our own work.

Regional Design Annual 2015Marian Bentjeswww.bantjes.com/work/print-regional-design/

Page 71: Fmp journal

71

Here is an example of work by Marian Bentjes who is another designer that inspires me. I was introduced to her and her work in first year through having a lecture of contextual studies. The collection of posters were shown to me as example in week 3 to see how she created different shapes and patterns that work with the text. At this stage I am currently lacking this with ‘Keep your electric eye on me’ and

the posters show that different colours and patterns can work collectively as a set. The idea and concept behind these are so strong that it doesn’t matter they aren’t the same colour or the text isn’t in the same place. Looking at these I was able to realise that actually a set of patterns can work with different colours and text. Moving forward with this concept I can take these ideas and thoughts on board and use.

Electric Eye Weeks 1 – 6

Page 72: Fmp journal

Final Major Project72

New direction moving forwardLooking into more detailed geometric patterns

At this point in the project it was good to stop and reflect because as it stood, the concept as a whole wasn’t working particularly well. Whilst reflecting and hoping to continue the concept, we were advised to look at some geometric patterns that were more detailed and would perhaps move this concept in an exciting direction. Here are three examples of some patterns I looked at in order to give me an idea of what quality and detail I needed to create for the show. The circle pattern to the right certainly reminded me of the Bowie costume he wore which was black and white.

Page 73: Fmp journal

73

This pattern here is colourful,

bright and reminds me of the

costume Bowie had.

Electric Eye Weeks 1 – 6

Page 74: Fmp journal

Final Major Project74

From looking into more intricate details of devel-oped patterns, I was able to see what I needed to do in order to evolve the current patterns into something less simple. Not really sure where to start, I made a selection of shapes and started with the circles because I felt this reflected a David Bowie costume the most. As his costume was black with a number of white lines going through it, I decided that perhaps each shape should be a collection of nine, not only would this show a great influence from Bowie but it also helps to link to the total number of courses the art school has.

Using this a starting point, I cut apart the circles and experimented with how they could be placed back together creating different boarders and patterns. The circled boarders look effective, but they wasn’t a successful way to link them in with a pattern in the main space and trying to make them a continuous on going pattern didn’t work. Having the circles link to together worked better as a set of 4 as these could be overlapped to create a continuous pattern. The next few pages now show the development for the circle pattern and various others that I created.

Here are the posters as they stand in week 3. The patterns are now further developed and hold nine shapes in each to link to the art school having nine courses. The shapes either link together or overlap each other in some way which is most appropriate for each individual pattern to make it continuous across the page. At this point the posters were just in two colours as I’m not completely confident using colours and creating bright colours schemes. They do need to be taken and push further and new colours do need to be introduced for the posters to become usable.

I think out of all the patterns the circle one is the most successful because not only does it link to the costume Bowie had, it is probably the most intricate and well linked design of the set. Another pattern that links to Bowie is triangles, it hints at the Ziggy Stardust era and the famous lightning bolt cover.

The layout of the posters shown to the left acts as an outline and does not particularly work. The use of typography isn’t strong enough and could actually be challenged more and this goes for the colour as well. Moving the posters and concept forward, the designs need to be more electric and not as polite. The type-face needs to change and be experimented with and this will act as a fourth smaller pilot project to explore.

New Poster DesignsEach poster has the potential for a different quote

Page 85: Fmp journal

85

The previous page showcases the experiments with new colours and new typefaces which acted as a little mini pilot project. I tried to go against all my design instincts and just have a play around with colours and typefaces that I would usually stay away from. Some colours and typefaces really did not work but others were some what of a revelation. This was a vital experiment in week three to take the posters and the degree show somewhere where it hasn’t been before.

The next set of posters on these pages show how the concept has developed and the colours along side the typeface has moved forward. The publicity for the main degree show has the potential to be a more fluid name because each poster could have a different lyric on. This would work as well for two different names for the fashion show and film, they have a different lyric linked to their subject and a completely different pattern to help represent them.

These are the set of six final posters that will be part of the concept presented to The Cambridge School of Art in week six. In the end, the name of the degree show needed to be one title but the names for fash-ion and film were flexible enough to change. The concept itself is strong enough to have these three names which were “Keep your electric eye on me” for the main publicity, “Oh! You pretty things” for fashion and then “Hooked to the silver screen” for film & tv.

The design within the concept is strong to then allow each poster to link together through the use of the patterns, colour and typography and as a set pose as a solid contender for the presentation. This concept has developed over the first 2-5 weeks and has come a long way from the very first simple patterns in week three to now having a strong elec-tric colour palette to work with the intricate patterns on all six posters that are influenced by David Bowie.

The one aim I feel has been really achieved is, if you were a massive fan of David Bowie you’re more than likely to see the links given the use of lyrics and patterns, but if you weren’t, the lyrics are still strong enough to be intriguing and capture your attention alongside this. The patterns whether or not you see the link to his costumes and outfits he used to wear doesn’t matter because they are just as intriguing as the lyrics and would still grab your attention if you saw them on the street far away.

Set of ThreePotential concept based around images called ‘Triptych’

Page 91: Fmp journal

91

This was the third concept that was created but rather than working individually, Elliot and I worked together to develop this further for the presentation. We had already two concepts that we felt tried to push the brief for the presentation, we needed one that was a little more polite and reserved and one we could work on together. The main idea behind this concept is to show a story through the university which comes in a set of three images. These images are from the Cambridge School of Art, they involve using light coming through windows and shadows on walls with then an overlay of a burst of colour.

Although this is the safest option for the presenta-tion, there isn’t an actual one worded name for these sets, the first set was called “View, Engage, Inspire” the second set was called “Purity, Within, Artform and the third was “Journey, Spectacle, Moment. The words are based around the thought of having an input, action and output and works on the basis of how you would feel once you had visited the show. The next set of pages show the development of this concept and final images that were presented.

95

The images originally began from the first image of the spot light by the graphic design base room as it included dark and light moments. From that photo, the concept then developed and more images were taken to match this image to try and see if the feel could be replicated. Initially the name was to be ‘Highlight’ or ‘Vista’ but they didn’t really represent the concept as a whole and the journey. The colours placed over the top were to compliment the design and enhance the highlights, lowlights and shadows.

The colours really worked as an accent over the top and brought emotion and passion to the images to represent our students. As the images developed we found that they weren’t strong enough on their own so being displayed in a long narrow poster as a set of three worked effectively and successfully. The concept was developing with no actual name, we had several up in the air but non that stuck until we created the words as an input, action and output. Although this was going to be presented to the art school, we did though however, at this point prefer the other two options, they moved forward the degree show more.

Page 97: Fmp journal

97

This section will showcase the concepts that never made it to the week six presentation or beyond the sketchbook because they weren’t right for the project in the overall development process. These thoughts and potential concept ideas run from week one to week six where the majority of experiments were generated in order to compile work together for the presentation. This was a crucial part of the project when thoughts and ideas had to be quickly explored and established, whilst being able to discontinue with the unsuccessful directions that we were taking.

This was quite a hard part of the project because not only did we want to answer the brief the art school set, we wanted to push the boundaries and meet our own brief to take things in a new direction. Some concepts were really good and had the potential to become the publicity for the degree show but they wouldn’t be taking it in a new direction for the future. The next set of pages show this development phase.

Concept based on CambridgeLooking at the map and surrounding areas of the town

This was a concept that never went any further than drawings because it didn’t have the look or feel that was needed to achieve moving the degree show forward. The thought process behind this idea was to draw out the roads and parks and then identify points of interests. These were where other courses would have shows and screenings out of the university to form part of the degree show, for example, film & tv use the picturehouse and fash-ion use the junction. Along side these indicated on the map, Anglia Ruskin would also be shown and would be in the middle of the map with a surround-ing area of x amount of miles in a circular shape shown in the drawings above. This was drawn out to see if there were any patterns appearing out of the roads or to see if something exciting would appear so the concept could find some potential.

MomentumAn experiment with the use of arrows

Page 101: Fmp journal

101

Momentum was a late runner in the line of concepts because others were not developing and new ones needed to be created in order to have a selection to pick from for the presentation. The drawings that I made for the climax I thought could be used for this name and potentially work, as using the arrows would in turn represent movement. It was mainly an experiment to see what could be created and how movement could be shown through the use of colours and shapes. Trying to create a colour scheme was difficult as I wasn’t sure what set of colours could

show this movement and be bright and eye catching. I didn’t think the graphics were going anywhere so did attempt to add some images behind the arrows. This still wasn’t taking the degree show somewhere new and at this point we didn’t think it would be a concept to take to the presentation. Moving the concept forward the colours were changed and the arrows restructured so that each poster had a differ-ent variation of movement because the yellow post-ers were too confusing. The new set are shown on the next page with a distinct leading coloured arrow.

Page 105: Fmp journal

105

From drawings to vectors on screen, this direction of thought didn’t make it many weeks in but was good to experiment with in between other concepts. Most other ideas we had were not just focused on typog-raphy, they involved other forms of graphics and we wanted to move away from this to see if we could

create something new. The word ‘Final’ repeated we felt didn’t completely need to be seen three times so the idea to split or break up the letters and words was a direction we took. Above show some experiments that we did, they were not particularly as successful or as strong as we had hoped for when starting the idea.

107Presentation Week 6

This project forms not only part of my final major project, but its an on going live brief that we have with The Cambridge School of Art. Wanting to treat the presentation as professional as possible, we mocked up every poster onto a template so rather than showing flat images, they looked liked they were hanging on the wall. Alongside the posters, we also made sure the invitations were mocked up showing the fold rather than a flat image and even had time to create some tote bags to really sell the concepts.

As we are all mostly in the digital age now, we made sure to create website banners and mock these up on both the Anglia Ruskin website and The Cambridge School of Art website. This then really gave the group of people we were presenting to less to visualise, it also gave them visuals on how versatile the designs were in different formats. The order of concepts for the presentation was as follows; Keep your electric eye on me, Triptych and Transition. To give each concept a fair chance, we felt this was the best order for them to be presented in. The following pages showcase all work we presented and their mock ups.

The presentation went really well and instead of being able to steam ahead on one concept, we had two that needed preparing for print. Initially ‘Keep your electric eye on me’ was chosen from a general vote but due to copy right issues we thought we may have to go with the concept Transition instead. This worked well as I had created and developed ‘Keep your electric eye on me’ and Elliot had worked on ‘Transition’ so we both had to continue with these until week eight and make sure they were print ready.

To move forward with the first chosen concept, due to the copyright issues that we had, we shortened and changed the name to ‘Electric eye’. In week eight we had the first set of proofs received, this was the first chance we had to see our artwork profes-sionally printed out. It was a great opportunity to see how proofs work and the approval process when working with clients. From these proofs we were able to decide that ‘Electric eye’ was ok to use, the patterns and coloured printed out well and everyone was pleased. From this point, rather than working individually on our concepts, we worked together.

At this stage in week 7, both concepts had to be ready for first proofs. There were two main reasons we did this, firstly this was due to copy right issues so if Electric eye wasn’t confirmed to use we had Tran-sition at the ready to go to the printers. Secondly, if Electric eye was to be used, we needed to make sure the colours and patterns worked and that the text was legible. Above are some examples of Transi-tion and the tests to the right show Electric eye. We created a set of three for each poster and each time made the text visibly brighter. This was to ensure that the design that was picked was correct and visually worked all together once professionally printed out.

Fashion Poster DevelopmentNew colour scheme and name for their fashion show

Page 125: Fmp journal

125

Once being able to use the concept ‘Electric eye’ we went through a series of developments with the Fashion department to ensure we created a relevant theme within their show. Fashion did have their own colour scheme already planned for the graduate show so we worked closely with them to ensure we could use this colour scheme to fit in with their theme. The pattern didn’t need any re-designing as they were happy with this, it was just the colours

that needed editing from the first draft. The colour scheme was grey, white and the one accent colour of yellow, so these were implemented into the poster. Some of examples of the development for the poster are shown above. The name was originally “Oh!, You pretty things” but as we needed a two worded short-ened lyric this was a bit of a task. The agreed name was then ‘The fusion’ as this was a song lyric but also it linked to the clothing range this season they created.

After moving forward with the concept Electric eye, we needed to find a shortened two worded lyric that we could use for the Film Screening title. The pattern had already been created it was just a case of working closely with this department of the school to come to a solution. We had several different colour schemes but the blue seemed to be one that worked best with the names we came up with. One of the first names that was suggested was ‘Silver screen’ but this

presented itself as an issue because the picturehouse already used this name. Our second choice of names was ‘Light machine’ as this best described we felt a projector which is used to show films at the cinema. Above are several examples of colour schemes and designs that we developed, we thought a grey back-ground would work well with fashion and the blue acts as a accent colour. It represents light and still has that electric vibe and feel to link to the main publicity.

From the first set of printing proofs, we were able to confirm that the concept Electric eye could be used. We were also able to choose from the prints which brightness of text we needed, this was a very good idea and vital set of prints within the development process. We knew that deadlines were approaching and needed to make sure that we were successfully meeting them, so having these coloured test prints previously saved not only time but also helped us with important decisions.

Now the posters have text with a new brightness we noticed that the pink poster with the yellow text was actually too bright and didn’t work within the set. We then decided the pattern broke up the text too much which made the text harder to read so perhaps a orange would be more successful. These amendments were easily changed and were sent just for some final proofs before we mass produced the publicity. The images shown on the previous pages are the second set of proofs, we did have a few issues with invitations but this was resolved with the printers. Originally they printed out without the pattern and once folded the ink cracked which wasn’t a professional look if you were receiving the invite.

Again these few little problems we had, were easily then resolved by working closely with the printers throughout the project. After these test proofs we were then able to go ahead with mass production of the publicity which not only included the post-ers and invites, we were now able to have bigger scale of artwork printed which was quite exciting.

Page 135: Fmp journal

135

Not only is it important to create a successful public-ity for the degree show, its also very important to create a set of effective signs so ensure people arrive at the Ruskin Gallery. The university has many differ-ent buildings and confusing routes which can take people to the gallery, all of which need to have trail blazers and directional signs in place. This part of the project is something that is left till the end because the printing deadlines do come around quite fast.

The concept needs to have been fully established in order to implement the designs throughout a wayfin-ding system. As Electric eye is a geometrical pattern that creates depth, we felt using this on 3D signs would enhance this effect it has. Not only are the colours already bright, but the pattern is very distinct and recognisable which would work well for the trail blazers. The initial idea was to have 3D boxes stuck on the wall with a mixture of laminated signs strategi-cally placed at the tricky parts to help guide people. The next few pages demonstrate the development of the signage and final outcomes that will be used.

ConclusionThe last chapter of my final major project and my degree

Page 141: Fmp journal

141

My final major project has sadly come to an end and its been one of the best projects I have undertaken at university. It has been incredibly challenging and difficult at times, but certainly a rewarding project to be involved in. Our organisational skills, professional-ism and passion has driven the project at all times in order to represent our art school at this years degree show. I feel I have successfully answered my proposal question and have not only been able to push the show publicity this year and brief for next year, but I have been able to push myself as a designer as well.

The theme throughout using the bright colours and patterns was something I had not done before and I enjoyed developing these each small step at a time. They did become recognisable and worked success-fully for the degree show. Throughout the project we did work closely with all printers to achieve the best prints as possible. I think from this project I’ve realised that, being a designer is half the job, the other half of your actual job is to keep up with emails, attend meetings, create presentations and fulfil your clients needs in every way you can. I am leaving this project proud of my achievements and looking forward to my career in design and all that it entails.
