The Perfect Beginner Class

Future Star! That one kid….

Foundations Matter

Building Awareness

Students make physical changes in their playing when they can:

• Identify there is a problem.• Sense the issue in their own body.• Have an understanding of the

benefits of the change.

A teacher’s job is to help students get out of their own way.

Physical habits arise for a reason: they served the person at some point in their life.

You do not know if the habit was born out of poor teaching, laziness, fear, or trauma.

Tread lightly when working with the body.

Potential to Move

• Head, arms, hands and torso should not “lock” into place!

• There must be independence amongst the parts so they can move freely.

• Watch out for the triangle of death!!!

Classroom Set Up

The flute takes more space to play than the other instruments. Please give it to them.

The flute section is on the left side of the band. It does not extend past 1:00.

The music stand, student’s head, and flute face the conductor.

The body and the chair are turned to a 45 degree angle to the music stand.

Floot Fire Foundations, p. 8

Do not ask students to sit sideways or on the corner of the chair.

Do not ask flutists to use a posture chair in a manner that defies its design!

Notice how her right foot is pulled back and her hip is slightly higher than her left.

Turn the chair, not the player.

No No’s!!!

These chairs are too close together.

Notice the students going behind the player next to them.

Look at the side-eyes!!!

No No’s!!!

Flutes are on the wrong side of the band.

This causes them to play with their back to the audience.

Imagine if their chairs weren’t turned at an angle! How twisted would they have to sit?

Every face is different

Embouchure Attributes

The embouchure should look as much like the natural face as possible.

No creases around the mouth unless they are there naturally.

There is potential for movement in the jaw and lips. In other words, they are not locked or tight.

The tongue is soft, touching gently behind the bottom teeth, saying “AW.”

AlignmentAlign the center of the embouchure hole to the center of the natural opening.

For most people the edge of the embouchure hole will touch where the lip meets the skin.

Master Class Master Class is a performance and coaching session. Students perform 1-2 times during the week. Our outstanding faculty then guide students on ways to improve their playing and become better musicians. Students may audit the class if they prefer not to perform.

Recitals Faculty recitals take place daily. Because our faculty are renowned performers and teachers, the concerts are inspiring! Students get to hear professional musicians performing at the highest level in an intimate setting. The Grand Finale concert featuring all Floot Fire students takes place on the last day. All concerts are free and open to the public.

Class Levels Students are grouped by age and skill level. Class and Ensemble assignments are based on information provided on the student’s registration form. There are no auditions. Please answer all questions thoroughly when applying.

About Our Workshops Floot Fire students participate in daily master classes, small ensembles, flute choir, electives, and listen to faculty recitals. During the workshop students work on tone, articulation, vibrato, technique, breathing, stage presence, intonation, dealing with nerves, practice habits, musician’s wellness, playing with an accompanist, and much more!
