Hold them securely and walk carefully. HANDLING GLASSWARE AND EQUIPMENT 40. Carry glass tubing, especially long pieces, in a vertical position to minimize the likelihood of breakage and injury. 41. Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass. Place broken or waste glassware in the designated glass disposal container. 42. Inserting and removing glass tubing from rubber stoppers can be dangerous. Always lubricateglassware(tubing, this- tle tubes, thermometers, etc.) before attempting to insert it in a stopper. Always protect your hands with towels or cotton gloves when inserting glass tubing into, or removingit from, a rubber stopper. If a piece of glassware becomes "frozen" in a stopper, take it to your instructorfor removal. 43. Fill wash bottles only with distilled water and use only as intended,e.g., rins- ing glassware and equipment, or adding water to a container. 44. When removing an electrical plug from its socket, grasp the plug, not the electri- cal cord. Hands must be completely dry before touching an electrical switch, plug, or outlet. 45. Examine glassware before each use. Never use chipped or cracked glassware. Never use dirty glassware. 46. Report damaged electrical equipment immediately. Look for things such as frayed cords, exposed wires, and loose connections. Do not use damaged elec- trical equipment. 47. If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment,ask the instructor for help. 48. Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water; it may shatter. HEATING SUBSTANCES 49. You will be instructed in the proper method of heating and boiling liquids in test tubes. Do not point the open end of a test tube being heated at yourself or anyone else. 52. Heated metals and glass remain very hot for a long time. They should be set aside to cool and picked up with cau- tion. Use tongs or heat-protective gloves if necessary. 53. Never look into a container that is being heated. 54. Do not place hot apparatus directly on the laboratory desk. Always use an insu- lating pad. Allow plenty of time for hot apparatus to cool before touching it. 55. When bending glass, allow time for the glass to cool before further handling. Flinn Scientific's Student Safety ContractPURPOSE

Science is a hands-on laboratory class. Youwill be doing many laboratory activitieswhich require the use of hazardouschemicals. Safety in the science classroom isthe # 1 priority for students, teachers, andparents. To ensure a safe science classroom,a list of rules has been developed and pro-vided to you in this student safety contract.These rules must be followed at all times.

Two copies ofthe contract are provided. Onecopy must be signed by both you and a par-ent or guardian before you can participate inthe laboratory. The second copy is to be keptin your science notebook as a constantreminder of the safety rules.

GENERAL RULES1. Conduct yourself in a responsible man-

ner at all times in the laboratory.

2. Follow all written and verbal instruc-

tions carefully. If you do not understanda direction or part of a procedure, ask theinstructor before proceeding.

3. Never work alone. No student may workin the laboratory without an instructorpresent.

4. When first entering a science room, donot touch any equipment, chemicals, orother materials in the laboratory areauntil you are instructed to do so.

5. Do not eat food, drink beverages, orchew gum in the laboratory. Do not uselaboratory glassware as containers forfood or beverages.

6. Perfonn only those experiments autho-rized by the instructor. Never do any-thing in the laboratory that is not calledfor in the laboratory procedures or byyour instructor. Carefully follow allinstructions, both written and oral.Unauthorized experiments are prohib-ited.

7. Be prepared for your work in the labora-tory. Read all procedures thoroughlybefore entering the laboratory.

8. Never fool around in the laboratory.Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranksare dangerous and prohibited.

9. Observe good housekeeping practices.Work areas should be kept clean and tidyat all times. Bring only your laboratoryinstructions, worksheets, and/or reportsto the work area. Other materials (books,purses, backpacks, etc.) should be storedin the classroom area.

10. Keep aisles clear. Push your chair underthe desk when not in use.

11. Knowthe locationsand operatingproce-dures of all safety equipment includingthe first aid kit, eyewash station, safetyshower, fire extinguisher, and fire blan-ket. Know where the fire alarm and theexits are located.

12. Always work in a well-ventilated area.Use the fume hood when working withvolatile substancesor poisonous vapors.Neverplaceyourheadintothe fumehood.

13. Be alert and proceed with caution at alltimes in the laboratory. Notify theinstructor immediately of any unsafeconditionsyou observe.

14. Dispose of all chemical waste properly.Never mix chemicals in sink drains.Sinks are to be used only for water andthose solutions designated by theinstructor. Solid chemicals, metals,matches, filterpaper, and all other insol-uble materials are to be disposed of inthe proper waste containers, not in thesink. Check the label of all waste con-tainers twice before adding your chemi-cal waste to the container.

15. Labels and equipment instructionsmustbe read carefully before use. Set up anduse the prescribed apparatus as directedin the laboratory instructions or by yourinstructor.

16. Keep hands away from face, eyes,mouth and body while using chemicalsor preserved specimens. Wash yourhands with soap and water after per-fomling all experiments. Clean all worksurfaces and apparatus at the end of theexperiment. Return all equipment cleanand in working order to the proper stor-age area.

17. Experiments must be personally moni-tored at all times.Youwill be assigned alaboratory station at which to work. Donot wander around the room, distractother students,or interferewith the labo-ratory experimentsof others.

18. Students are never pennitted in thescience storage rooms or preparationareas unless given specific pennissionby their instructor.

19. Know what to do if there is a fire drillduring a laboratory period; containersmust be closed, gas valves turned off,fume hoods turned off, and any electri-cal equipmentturned off.

20. Handle all living organisms used in alaboratory activity in a humane manner.Preserved biological materials are to betreated with respect and disposed ofproperly.

21. When using knives and other sharpinstruments, always carry with tips andpoints pointing down and away.Alwayscut away from your body. Never try tocatch falling sharp instruments. Graspsharp instruments only by the handles.

22. If you have a medical condition (e.g.,allergies, pregnancy, etc.), check withyour physicianprior to workingin lab.

CLOTHING23. Any time chemicals, heat, or glassware

are used, students will wear laboratorygoggles. There will be no exceptions tothis rule!

24. Contact lenses shouldnot be worn in thelaboratory unless you have pernlissionfrom your instructor.

25. Dressproperly during a laboratoryactiv-ity. Long hair, dangling jewelry, andloose or baggy clothing are a hazard inthe laboratory. Long hair must be tiedback and danglingjewelry and loose orbaggy clothing must be secured. Shoes.must completely cover the foot. No san-dals allowed.

26. Lab aprons have been provided for youruse and should be worn during labora-tory activities.

ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES27. Report any accident (spill, breakage,

etc.) or injury (cut, bum, etc.) to theinstructor immediately, no matter howtrivial it may appear.

28. If you or your lab partner are hurt,immediately yell out "Code one, Code'one" to get the instructor's attention.

29. Ifa chemical splashes in your eye(s) oron your skin, immediately flush withrunning water from the eyewash stationor safety shower for at least 20 minutes.NotifYthe instructor immediately.

30. When mercury thennometers are bro-ken, mercury must not be touched.NotifYthe instructor immediately.

HANDLINGCHEMICALS31. All chenlicals in the laboratoryare to be

considered dangerous. Do not touch,taste, or smell any chemicals unlessspecifically instructed to do so. Theproper technique for smelling chemicalfumes will be demonstratedto you.

32. Check the label on chemical bottlestwice before removing any of the con-tents. Take only as much chemical asyou need.

33. Never return unused chemicals to theiroriginal containers.

High School Physics Safety Contract Addendum(To be used with the High School Flinn Contract)

1. Safety goggles should be worn when there are projectiles of fast moving masses,and when open flames, glassware or chemicals are used.

2. Carefullyread all instructions regarding equipment and its usage, and listen toteacher's oral instructions. Followall instructions carefully.

3. DONOTTOUCH EQUIPMENT UNTIL IT HAS BEEN EXPLAINED AND PERMISSIONHAS BEEN GRANTED.

4. Assemble equipment according to instructions.

5. Onlyuse equipment for the purposes stated in the experiment.

6. Highelectric current makes wires and resistors HOT. Keep switch OPENwhen nottaking a measurement with a meter.

7. Never connect an ammeter to an electrical circuitwith little to no resistance.

8. Alwaysplug/unplug electrical equipment properly. Grasp the plug, not the electricalcord. Hands must be completely dry before touching an electrical switch, plug, oroutlet.

9. Report damaged electrical equipment immediately. Lookfor things such as frayedcords, exposed wires, and loose connections. Do not use damaged electrical equipment.

10. Keep water away from devices plugged in ACoutlets!

11. Put away or store equipment according to instructions.

12. When using Vernier or Pasco equipment, always plug probes into the correct port.Never attempt to force a probe into a port, always contact the teacher if you haveproblems assembling the Vernier or Pasco equipment.

13. Wear proper footwear to prevent injury from fallingmasses!

14. Students are never permitted in the science storage rooms unless given specificpermission from the instructor.

15. Knowwhat to do if there is a fire drillduring a laboratory period. Containers mustbe closed and any electrical equipment turned off. Also, Bunsen burners or othersources of flame must be turned off.

16. When using knives and other sharp instruments, always carry them with tips andpoint pointing down and way. Alwayscut away from the body. Never try to catch fallingsharp instruments. Grasp sharp instruments only by the handles.
