Upcoming… While the year’s drawing to a close, there’s some significant events coming up, for which we would value your prayers…

ES AGM Our new committee and leadership team will be voted in at this gathering on October 14.

Celebration Dinner This is our final on-campus event for the year, where we commission those graduating, and celebrate the work the Father has been doing in 2014.

Waikerie Mission A team of Flinders and UniSA students will be heading to the Waikerie region over November 27-30 to share the Gospel through school programs, prison ministry, youth events and in churches. This is a great opportunity for students to put into practice some things they have learned through the year.

NTE National Training Event is our national conference, held in Canberra over December 6-10.

Preaching Mission At NTE students will be trained in workshops to prepare and deliver a Bible Talk. This mission, held after NTE, will be a chance for them to deliver their talk.

FLINDERS UPDATE Proclaiming Jesus | Teaching the Bible | Helping students grow in Christ

Who is Your God? August 18-21 was Jesus Week at Flinders.

It has become somewhat of a tradition for ES to be a presence on the plaza in week 4, engaging with passers by on their views, finding out what they know or don’t know about Jesus, fielding tricky and sometimes hostile questions, and having lengthy chats over coffee and cookies with those who are genuinely seeking and exploring the big issues of life."Many people appreciated the fact that we were interested in hearing what they thought about life, the universe and God, and this often opened the door to sharing our perspective - and more importantly, the truth of the Gospel."Our posters advertising the four lunchtime talks caused a bit of a st ir for some, prompting posters in response f rom the Pastafarians (an Atheist club), a few angry retorts and complaints,"

and a number of assumptions about what the talks were about from people who didn’t bother to come along and hear what we actually said. However we still have a number of non-believers come to talks, a few of whom indicated a genuine desire to hear and wrestle with the claims of the Gospel."

Next year things will look considerably different as the central campus undergoes renovations (see below). This will offer both challenges and new opportunities to enga ge wi th students in public spaces, and may park the end o f our P laza outreaches. We’ll have to wait and see!

Flinders & UniSA suburban Mid Year Conference, July 7-11, at Walker Flat. Theme: Afterlife

Could you help us? ‘Ministry to the Interior’ Every Tuesday evening of Semester time, our Tuesday Night Training program involves eating a meal together. Up until now, this has been catered by students, however this id becoming increasingly difficult to organise, especially with some unknowns about access to kitchen facilities in the future (see below). We are looking for person or two who would be willing to serve the students in 2015 by organising the catering for some or all of these nights. All expenses will be reimbursed. If you are interested and would like to know more, contact us.

What’s Happening on Sturt Campus? Lauren Hull If you’ve ever visited Sturt Campus you’ll know it’s a unique place. First there’s its location – 20mins walk from main campus through a valley of pine trees. Then there are the buildings – four wings surrounding a main courtyard, making it feel like you’re isolated from the rest of the world. And of course, there are the students – nursing & midwifery students, film and media, paramedics, assorted allied health, and the IELI (English as a Second Language) community – a slightly confusing combination! ES has always wanted to establish a presence down at Sturt campus, but in the past this has been a challenge. This year things have started to get off the ground. I have been able to spend 1 day a week at Sturt & with an enthusiastic bunch of Sturt ESers there have been lots of great things happening. It’s still early days for Sturt campus, but it’s been exciting to see weekly Bible study groups, public events (like a hot cross bun g iveaway a t Ea s ter ) and a g rowing excitement for Sturt-based evangelism!"

International Students meeting Jesus Dave Spencer This year has been a very encouraging year for Flinders FOCUS. We have had a large number of both Christian and non-Christian students of many nationalities attend our weekly meetings on campus. One of the most exciting parts about this ministry has been talking to the non-Christians about Jesus. The students have many questions, and are very keen to learn about who Jesus is, and what He has done for them. "

Three students, in particular, have come to a point where they are seriously considering Jesus' message and what that means for them. One Chinese student said that the most touching thing he has experienced this year has been witnessing the difference in the way that Christians treat each other. Another Chinese student, said that he was particularly moved by the note of joy and hope expressed in some Christian music. The third student, also from China, has started learning how to pray to God, and is already beginning to reach her family and friends in China with the gospel. "

God is very much at work amongst the international students here at Flinders University. Please continue to pray for His Name to be glorified, both here and among the nations."

Dave will be taking on the role of Flinders FOCUS Director in 2015. Currently his support is well below what will be needed if he is to have the time to effectively lead this ministry. If you would like to support Dave and Kate Spencer, go to afes.org.au/support or contact us using the details on the back page.

Big changes! 2015 will be a time of significant physical changes a t F l inders , w i th the redevelopment of the central precinct (top) and the opening of the new Tonsley campus (bottom). With these physical changes will come some operational changes for ES. We’re anticipating a greatly reduced access to the new Oasis facilities, a different open space in which to engage with students, the opportunities and challenges of a brand new campus on which to pioneer a new work, and an extended time of adapting and accommodat ing a s reno vat ion work continues through the year. We are trusting that God now only has all this in His hands, but that He will use these changes to bring more students to hear the great news of the Gospel. "
