Flexible polyurethane foam for mattresses — Specification — Part 2: Mattresses

1 Scope

This Part 2 of this Draft Rwanda Standard covers seven types of flexible polyurethane foam sleeping mattresses intended for use in homes, hotels and similar applications.

2 Normative references

The following documents are referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content constitutes requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this standard, the definitions in EAS 7-1 shall apply.

4 Requirements

4.1 Types

A sleeping mattress shall be of one of the following types:

a) Type 1 — A sleeping mattress having a flexible polyether foam core;

b) Type 2 — A sleeping mattress having a reconstituted foam core;

c) Type 3 — (S) mattress, the foam interior of which consists of a single type of polyurethane foam;

d) Type 4 — (FS) mattress, the foam interior of which is divided into two parts to give the user a firm or soft sleeping surface option;

e) Type 5 — (RS) mattress, the foam interior of which consists of two identical polyurethane foam parts placed above and below reconstituted foam;

f) Type 6 — (RFS) mattress, the foam interior of which gives the user a firm or soft sleeping surface option together with a reconstituted foam centre part;

g) Type 7 — (M) mattress, the foam interior of which is a multiple combination of foams of design differing from those given for types 1 to 4 (inclusive).

4.2 Fillings and quilting foams

4.2.1 Type 3 mattress

A filling for a type 3 mattress shall consist of foam complying with class No. 26, grade 12 of EAS 7-1 without correction or repair. A layer of convoluted foam filling shall be used to form the top (or sleeping) surface(s) and the quality of this foam shall be not less than class No. 26, grade 12 of EAS 7-1.


4.2.2.1 General

A filling for a type 4 mattress shall consist of an upper and a lower filling part. The interface surfaces between the upper and lower filling parts shall be contoured, provided the minimum thickness given in Table 2 is maintained. A layer of convoluted foam filling shall be used to form the top (or sleeping) surface(s) and the quality of this foam shall be not less than class No. 26, grade 12 of EAS 7-1.

4.2.2.2 Lower part

The lower filling part shall be of a foam of a quality not less than class No. 26, grade 16 of EAS 7-1 and of thickness not less than 90 mm.

4.2.2.3 Upper part

The upper filling part shall be of a foam of a quality not less than class No. 26, grade 12 of EAS 7-1 and of thickness not less than 50 mm (38 mm at the lowest point in the case of a contoured mattress).


4.2.3.1 General

A filling for a type 5 mattress shall consist of two identical foam parts placed above and below a reconstituted foam part (centre). A layer of convoluted foam filling shall be used in the construction of the upper and lower filling parts to form the top (sleeping) surface(s) and the quality of this foam shall be not less than class No. 26, grade 12 of EAS 7-1.

4.2.3.2 Upper and lower filling parts

The upper and lower filling parts shall be of a foam of a quality not less than class No. 26, grade 12 of EAS 7-1 and of thickness not less than 25 mm.

4.2.3.3 Centre part

The centre filling part shall be of a reconstituted foam of a quality not less than class No. 64, nominal hardness factor 19 of EAS 7-3, and of thickness not less than 75 mm.


4.2.4.1 General

A filling for a type 6 mattress shall consist of three foam parts:

a) soft part providing one sleeping surface;

b) firm part providing a second (alternative) sleeping surface(s);

c) centre part being of reconstituted foam.

A layer of convoluted foam filling may be used in the construction of the soft and firm parts to form the top (sleeping) surface(s) and the quality of this foam shall be not less than class No. 26, grade 12 of EAS 7-1.

4.2.4.2 Soft filling part

The soft filling part shall be of a foam of a quality not less than class No. 26, grade 12 of EAS 7-1 and of thickness not less than 25 mm.

4.2.4.3 Firm filling part

The firm filling part shall be of foam of a quality not less than class No. 26, grade 16 of EAS 7-1 and of thickness not less than 25 mm.

4.2.4.4 Centre part

The centre filling part shall be of a reconstituted foam of a quality not less than class 64, nominal hardness factor 19 of EAS 7-3 and of thickness not less than 75 mm.


A filling for a type 7 mattress shall consist of a combination of foams provided that any foam used shall have a quality not less than

a) class 26 of EAS 7-1 for polyurethane foam; and

b) class 64, nominal hardness factor 19 of EAS 7-3 for reconstituted foams.


4.3 Foam used for quilting

Foam used for quilting of thickness 4 mm or greater shall be a foam of various grades meeting quality requirements specified in EAS 7-1.

4.4 Adhesion of mattress filling contacting parts

Contacting surfaces of mattress filling parts shall be uniformly and acceptably adhered to one another. The adhering edges shall not have any single unadhered length exceeding 100 mm.

4.5 Finish

All outer surfaces of the mattress shall be smooth and free from defects, including splits and tears. The mattress shall be clean in appearance, without any objectionable odour. All sewing shall be securely and neatly finished off.

4.6 Materials

4.6.1 Cores

The core of a sleeping mat or mattress shall comply with the following requirements:

a) Type 1 — The core shall comply with the requirements for class No 23, Grade 12 of EAS 7-1;

b) Type 2 — The core shall comply with all the requirements for class No. 56 of EAS 7-3 and the nominal value of the hardness factor shall be 10;

c) Types 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 — The core shall comply with all the requirements for class No. 26, Grade 12 of EAS 7-1;

4.6.2 Classes of foam

The classes of foam shall be one of the following:

a) Classes 17 and 20— These two classes of foam are for use in light duty (L) mattresses;

b) Class 23, 26— This class of foam is for use in medium duty (A) mattresses;

c) Class 30— This class of foam is for use in heavy-duty mattresses;

d) Class 36— This class of foam is for use in mattresses (V) subjected to severe stress under normal usage.

4.7 Dimensions of core

4.7.1 Thickness

Minimum thickness shall be 30 mm.

4.7.2 Nominal length and width

The nominal length and width of the core of a sleeping mattress shall be as specified.

4.7.3 Actual length and width

The actual length and width, measured in accordance with EAS 7-1 shall not differ from the nominal values by more than the appropriate tolerances as given in Table 1.

5 Packaging and marking

5.1 Packaging

5.1.1 Mattresses shall be so packed that they are adequately protected during normal transportation and storage

5.1.2 Mattresses shall be individually wrapped in sealed polyethylene bags that are strong enough to prevent any damage, gross distortion and nicking to contents during storage and transportation.

5.2 Marking

The following information shall appear in legible and indelible marking on a strong durable label that is firmly sewn to the outside of the ticking of each mattress:

a) name, postal and physical address of manufacturer;


b) lot or batch number;

c) dimensions;

d) density class of foam;

e) Country of origin.

5.2.1 Additional marking of type 2 and type 4 mattresses

A type 2 or a type 4 mattress shall have information indicating which sleeping surface provides a soft or firm support, printed prominently in legible and indelible block letters (of height at least 30 mm) on a strong, durable label that is firmly sewn to the ticking of the sleeping surfaces.

5.2.2 Bulk containers

The following information shall be given in legible and durable marking on each bulk container or on a label securely attached to the container:

a) information specified in 5.2 a), b), and c);

b) quantity of mattresses;

c) any additional information specified by the purchaser.

6 Sampling and compliance with Part 1 of the specification

NOTE This section applies to the sampling for inspection and testing before acceptance or rejection of single lots (consignments) in

cases where no information about the implementation of quality control or testing during manufacture is available to help in assessing the

quality of the lot. It is also used as the procedure for adjudicating in cases of dispute.

6.1 Sampling

Representative samples shall be taken randomly from the factory, market or elsewhere and tested for compliance with the standard.
