SFCT: What do you wish you had known when you were first starting out as an artist?

DM:  I wish I had not so easily categorized art within the confines of traditional modes of expression

like writing, painting, acting, or music. For it is possible to extend art into many different forms,

including social artistry in the sense of uniting people around a common purpose, or finding ways to

weave together the wisdom of diverse cultures, to broaden understanding and effect change in the

world. You could call this kind of artistry compassionate activism.

SFCT: What has been your most memorable or influential experience as an artist?

DM:  Publishing my latest book, Sojourns of the Soul: One Woman's Journey around the World and

into Her Truth (Quest Books), a spiritual travel memoir and gold winner in the 2013 Nautilus Book

Awards, recognizing books that seek to raise awareness and create a better world. Sojourns of the

Soul has served as a catalyst for transformational talks and workshops I'm giving around the country.

SFCT:  How do you prepare for working in the studio or in the field? Describe your process: are you

methodical or adaptive, analytical or intuitive?

DM:  As a writer, you need to draw from both the left and right brain--the analytical and intuitive.

That said, I believe I rely more on my intuitive gifts, as I believe the best writing comes when you

surrender to the creative process and open yourself to receive wisdom and inspiration from the

unseen, higher realms of consciousness.

SFCT:  Have you ever seen a work of art and thought, "I wish I had done that..."?

DM:  I wish I had written novels like those of Virginia Woolf, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Leo Tolstoy. I

just completed my own novel and am waiting to see what happens with it.

SFCT:  In his memoirs, Ernest Hemingway famously describes the starting point of each of his

works: “All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence you know.” How

does this idea apply to your own art?

DM:  As a longtime writer/journalist and author, expressing the truth--what I know, feel and believe

to be true at the core of my being--has always been my first priority.
