Dos and Don’ts of Sports Coaching for Kids- a Guideline

Sports coaching can be a tricky thing to do, more so if your student is a child. It can be difficult to handle children as each age group shows a different level of behaviour. So before indulging in a Training session, it is best to analyse and prepare a plan for your actions; This will make a session run smoother which benefits both coaches and players.

Dos and Don’ts of Sports Coaching for Kids- a Guideline

Dos• Planning- It is best to plan out each

session, what end product you want. Expectations from your players, what they should know or be able to perform at the session’s end should be realistically Achieved.

• Repeat to Reinforce- Your sessions should have specific themes; seize each opportunity and focus on some key points. Each session’s progress should be built upon; plenty of time should be dedicated to the basics.

Don’ts• Over Coaching- With young players, the

focus should be more on action instead of talking. After establishing the activity, the points should be about 10-15 seconds.

• Treating Everyone as Equal- This may not sound good, but from the point of view of development, all players of the group can never be equal. Sometimes some players may need individual attention and for this you need to make different approaches for each player.

Dos and Don’ts of Sports Coaching for Kids- a Guideline

Dos Don’ts• Too Much Commentary- In some sports,

especially in football, players have to make decisions while playing. In this respect, coaches of any good football academy for children should allow the player to make his own choice on the pitch without being scared of failure.

• More than One Coach- In many groups, there may be two or3 coaches. In that case it is best to divide the responsibilities and avoid interfering in the decisions made by that coach in that particular sphere. Each activity should have only one leader.

• Understanding Development- Sometimes it helps to become a student of the students. Try and understand the players’ abilities in a physical, emotional and cognitive manner since it will prove to be essential to your coaching performance.

• Assessing Players- Keep an eye on the players while they are performing in games or practice sessions. Focus whether they are able to execute the basics like turning, dribbling, shooting, etc.
