To be a Centurion required that, ina mostly illiterate society, one be able to readand write clearly, to be able to convey and createorders, to be capable of not only performing everyskill of a Roman soldier but to teach every skill ofa Roman soldier. Becoming a Centurion requiredintense physical ability, courage beyond the norm,years of sacrifice and a total devotion to thephilosophy which was Rome.

Weight! There are several philosophies on dealing with weight as it applies to load carriage.Some development has occurred in lightweight materials, but these tend to sacrificeperformance. Other developments have taken place in load transfer by shifting weightaround, but they reduce flexibility while increasing heat retention, bulk and even overallload. FirstSpearhas taken a different approach. We listened to the Users and decidedto eliminate the weight and sacrifice nothing.

In the design assessment of current pouch attachment systems, FirstSpear

recognizedthat the major weight parasite on both the platforms and the attaching pockets is the yardsof bulk nylon, snaps and polymer stiffener. The FirstSpear6/12technology eliminatesthese components and achieves a 20%-40% reduction in weight per standard Assaulterconfiguration when compared to current pocket attachment systems.

The FirstSpearteam invested more than a year developing and testing the FirstSpear 6/12Pocket Attachment System. It utilizes state of the art fabric technologies to delivera completely modular system, compatible with standard MOLLE pockets. FACTORS TO CONSIDER IN DETERMINING YOUR

MARITIME PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS:

WHAT IS NEUTRAL BUOYANCY AND WHY WOULDYOU WANT TO BE NEUTRAL LY BUOYANT?

The term neutrally buoyant refers to a Usersability to float just at the surface of the water,without bobbing like a cork, and to be able tohave his or her mouth slightly out of the water,without requiring effort. Neutral buoyancy alsoallows you to get under the water in the eventthat you would need to do so. There are manyreasons one might need to be able to get underthe water including to avoid detection or toduck under a wave on insertion or extraction ofan OTB. FirstSpearprovides state of the artBuoyancy Compensation BC Inserts for our lineof armor carriers. These BCs give the wearerapproximately 10lbs of positive lift in seawaterto assist the end user in achieving his or herneutral buoyancy.

WHAT DOES BUOYANCY FACTOR MEAN?

Every item an Operator wears has a buoyancyfactor. Each items buoyancy factor depends onthe amount of water it displaces and the densityof the item. For instance, a pure block of leadweighing 5 lbs on land will weigh 5 lbs negativein sea water, as it has a buoyancy factor of zero.

However, 5 lbs of bullets on dry land will not be5 lbs negative in sea water as they have sealedblack powder as well as casings made from lessdense materials such as brass. Most radios aresealed and waterproof which also changes theirbuoyancy factor. Everything has a buoyancy factorand understanding the buoyancy factors of yourequipment is critical to achieving neutral buoyancy.

WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO FIGURE HOW MUCHLIFT I NEED TO MAKE MY KIT NEUTRALLY BUOYANT?

It is simple; take all of your operational kit, putit in the water, and let it soak for a minimumof ten minutes. This will allow your kit to fullydeplete itself of any air pockets and become fullysaturated. Next, hook your kit together as tightlyas possible and weigh it hanging from a scale atthe surface of the water (not out of the water, butat the surface). The number your scale measurestells you how negative your gear is and whereto start when it comes to offsetting and makingyour kit neutrally buoyant.

PERSONAL BUOYANCY?

Every persons body is different due to theirindividual mass and density. Two men whoweigh the same will most likely not have thesame density, so therefore they will not have

the same negative buoyancy. After getting in thewater and allowing your clothes to become fullsaturated, grab hold of the same scale that yourkit is hanging from (grab below the surface).Allow your lips or nose to be out of the waterand hang, as this will give you the amount ofpositive lift you will need to fully compensatefor your negative buoyancy factor and becomeneutrally buoyant.

DIP TEST

It is always extremely important to perform aDip Test with your gear. It is not acceptableto just assume you are good. If your kit changes,then you need to compensate for the piece ofgear that was added or removed. Dont be thatguy that took a shortcut; it could make for along night.

HARD CELL OR CLOSED CELL FOAM VS. INFLATABLE?

This is an old argument that dates back to theBC timeframe. Which is better, closed cell foamor inflatable? It is first important to understandthat closed cell foam creates buoyancy byencapsulating air into tiny pockets. To gain theamount of lift you may require with closed cellfoam can become very bulky and in normaloperations you only need the flotation for a shortperiod of time. Carrying around a lot of extrafoam adds weight and bulk, restricts movement,and can add significant heat build-up and

increase overall heat stress. At FirstSpear

we believe in using a hybrid approach of smallportions of technically advanced closed cell foamand inflatable chambers to properly achieve neutralbuoyancy only when you need it. This allowsyou the option of deflating your BC Inserts whenyou are out of the AO that required them duringyour operation. Not only does this approach aidin your ability to adjust your personal protectiveequipment (PPE) to the fight, it keeps the foamfrom being exposed directly to the water, thuskeeping it dry and light.

TACTICAL AID TO FLOTATION

FirstSpearbelieves in the combination of BCInserts to get to neutral buoyancy in conjunctionwith manually activated tactical aids to flotation.

It is important to note that FirstSpear doesnot produce or claim to provide PFDs (personalflotation devices) or life saving devices. Weprovide the best Tactical Aids to Flotation.

HOW MUCH LIFT IS ENOUGH FOR A TACTICALAID TO FLOTATION?

Our Tactical Flotation Cummerbund provides thefollowing:

57lbs of lift at a depth 15fsw

80lbs of lift on the surface in salt water

Why do we provide so much lift? It is important

to note the lift we are looking to provide is notat the surface, but at depth. Our goal is to allowyou, the equipped Operator, the ability to exita crashed helicopter or sinking vessel at depthand to get you and potentially another victim tothe surface. The 80 lbs of lift on the surface issimply a byproduct of the lift needed at depth.Our bladders are sized properly to allow for80lbs of lift at the surface, eliminating the needfor a blow off valve, commonly used on otherflotation devices.

Oh yeah, if you are that guy that didnt do a diptest, this is where we have your back; you aregoing up when you pull the handles.

AUTOMATIC ACTIVATION OR MANUAL ACTIVATION?

The problem we see with automatic inflationis they can go off when you dont want themto, potentially trapping the end users in a overturned vessel or inside a sinking helicopter. Itis important that the user clears the hazard priorto activation of their tactical aid to flotation.

C02 QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE.

If used with a properly sized bladder, each gramof C02 will give approximately 1lb of lift at thesurface in sea water. FirstSpear InflatableTactical Flotation Aids are standardized on 38gram CO2 filled cartridges (P/N 86121Z 2W134weighing 147 grams each). These cartridges

WHAT ARE THE THREATS I AM FACING?

The threat you will be facing is one factor that should be considered in yourselection of Body Armor. This is not always easy, however, many reputableresources provide information that can be used in your decision for bothForeign and Domestic environments. Among them are the FBI Uniform CrimeReport (UCR) and published Reports such as the Bureau of Justice StatisticsSelected Findings Guns Used In Crime paper. Through interaction with severalGovernment agencies and related Operational experiences, several things havebeen proven over time and foremost among them is that Body Armor saves lives.

THE QUESTION THAT YOU AS AN OPERATOR NEED TO ASK IS: HOW MUCH DO I NEED?

Weight reduction does not just occur with better platforms. The ballistic protectivecomponents that are inside the carrier are a critical factor in the overall systemweight. Some Operational personnel cannot have a say in their armor selection.For those who do, or one day hope to, FirstSpearhas been hard at work on thischallenge. This year FirstSpearwill bring forward several different soft armorpackages that will be labeled FirstSpearand certified by the National Instituteof Justice (NIJ).

DOES THE WEIGHT AND THICKNESS OF MY BODY ARMOR SYSTEM MATCH

MY TACTICS, TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES EMPLOYED OPERATIONALLY?Specific threat projectiles require proportional amounts of weight and mass tomake effective, survivable stops. Are the threats that you commonly mandateactual threats in your Area of Operations (AO) or are they a blanket statement?This should be a frequently asked question particularly when selecting a soft armorinsert for a Hard Armor Plate solution. If your TTP is to make use of dynamicmovement, rapid entry and Initiative Based Tactics (IBT), then attention mustbe paid to the overall weight and bulk of the armor system employed.

Frequently FS Users will request a NIJ I IIA.06 Soft Armor Insert for theirFS Plate Carrier. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services studied 844 homicidesthat occurred in 18 jurisdictions from 1989 through 1991. Firearms were identifiedas the murder weapon in 600 cases. Over 70% of the firearms used were handguns. Of those handguns for which the caliber and firing action could be identified,19% were .38 caliber revolvers, 10% were .22 caliber revolvers, and 9% were9 millimeter semiautomatic pistols.

The Hawaii Department of the Attorney General, Crime Prevention Division, studied 59 firearm-related homicides in Honolulu from 1988 to 1992. Handguns wereused in 48 homicides (over 80%) including 11 handguns of 9 millimeter caliber,10 of .357 caliber, 10 of .38 caliber, and 5 of .25 caliber.
