Western canada Fashion Week (WcFW) is a continually evolving creative event that generates excitement through local and international designer and artisan communities. It is the longest running and most established Fashion Week in Alberta and the third largest fashion week in canada. WcFW has worked since fall 2005 to support local and canadian

creators while also showcasing a selection of established international designers. They work to create public awareness for talent by providing a progressive environment for designers to promote their collections to an appreciative audience and potential buyers. The list of creative minds engaged in WcFW includes photographers, make-up artists, hair stylists, fashion stylists and models, all of whom have the opportunity to collaborate with emerging and established designers and refine their skills while developing a strong design community. “This is a huge event for young designers and artists,” said

executive and creative director Sandra Sing Fernandes. “We’re the only incubator of this kind in canada, and we sponsor and support all of these creative people. This is where we launch a lot of successful careers, some as designers or hairstylists, some as buyers for stores or other related industries.”WcFW garners attention from local and national media, buyers

and the general public, as well as international attention from designers, media, buyers and other fashion weeks. There is a runway showcase bi-annually and they have also launched “Western canada Fashion Week Incubator Program,” designed to help advance Western canada’s fashion entrepreneurs to a national and international level. The WcFW team works year-round to promote its designers, and

artists have participated in a number of events, including The Edmonton Fringe Festival, The Works Art and design Festival, Old Strathcona Fashion Extravaganza, couture For cambodia, Fashion on Fire, Kingsway garden mall “Let your Light Shine” campaign, and Transcanada Runway (montreal).WcFW supports rising talent through a variety of competitions

held through the week. you’ll find design, hair and makeup contests that allow artists to showcase their unique ideas.“It’s a way to get into the industry, especially for those who

aren’t sure where to begin,” said Sing Fernandes. “Our contests are the perfect opportunity to get noticed and meet other artists, whether it’s hair, makeup or others.”Every day brings something new to WcFW, and this year watch

for theatre and dance performances, all of the competitions, and showcases that range from celebrity and salon to retail and 2012 designer collections.“This is an incredible, collaborative event,” said Sing Fernandes.

“The cross-pollination of creative minds is so important, and everything we do comes from the heart.”WcFW runs Sept. 13-20 at the TransAlta Art barns. Tickets are

available at The Fringe Theatre box Office or Tix on the Square. For more information visit westerncanadafashionweek.com. While you’re on the website, check out all the details on the spring season.“We’re always anticipating our next season,” said Sing

Fernandes. “And young people can start thinking about spring 2013 and all the opportunities we offer to help them get into the industry. If they contact us in October, after the fall season and well before spring, we are happy to help in any way we can.”

eyeWear trendsfor fall

Thin and bigOne trend we’re noticing that is relatively new this season is taking all the

popular shapes of the last few years, trimming the thickness down, and keeping the size. The result is glasses with stunning presence and very little visual weight. Perfect for showing off big beautiful eyes and more of your natural personality while distinguishing you from the boring alternatives.

Round or P shapeThink round and its many iterations, more along the lines of Johnny depp

or Robert downey Jr. than Harry Potter. These classically intellectual shapes have a timeless distinguished vibe that look as good with a white T-shirt and jeans as they do with an ascot and a pipe. Women can also take advantage of slightly reworked classics with a touch of femininity, especially in beautiful high contrast, never seen before versions of tortoise-shell or deep olive.

Cat’s eyebetter than finding an old pair at a vintage shop, these reworked classics

come in much more interesting and beautiful colours and shapes than their predecessors. beveled details, luxurious sandwiched colours and undeniably feminine. Look also for frames that would traditionally be more masculine updated with a slight feminine lift to appropriate those big looks for those looking for a pair that’s a little more luxe than a vintage rescue job.

Metal versions of classic plastic shapesWant the look of more distinguished plastic frames but need the professional

look and feel of metal? These titanium versions of classic looks will give you beautiful quality, comfort, and adjustability while still setting you apart from others. The resiliency of these frames also is great for those with an active lifestyle who don’t necessarily need everything they own to scream sports. conservative doesn’t have to mean boring.

Clip-onsWhile sounding a bit geriatric, clip-ons are starting to reflect fashion and

function. custom made for any frame, the idea of pulling it off is either making them as inconspicuous as possible, or if they do have to be a bit more obvious, lend an extra element of design to the frame. Adding a second bar and playing with lens colour really can make a clip on something you don’t have to feel embarrassed about clamping on and heading out the door.

The team at The beauty Lounge put together these three fabulous fall looks. They’re a little retro, a little futuristic and all about creativity and

playing with hot, new looks. Watch for new colour combinations, a lot of different textures, and heavy hairstyles this fall. They’re

bold and sexy and each look makes its own statement. In this first look (a), the team used purple extensions to complement model Ashley’s rich hair colour. With

a sideswept front, side pin curl and length through the back, this is a versatile look that is both sensual

and ethereal, which we love. Products used include Artego’s casual Volume mousse, Shine On me Spray and Root Lifter, all available at The beauty Lounge.

The second look (b) varies drastically and gives Ashley a whole new dimension to play with. Her length is curled and pinned and gorgeous texture is added throughout. The team worked with Ashley’s hair colour and tendencies, as well as her colouring and face shape. Products include brocato’s cloud 9 Hotshapes Flat Iron and Finish Spray, Volumizing Tonic Lifting and Finishing Spray and big Easy Volumizing dry Shampoo, all available at The beauty Lounge. This third look (c) is a work of art. using

additional extensions, swirls and layers of braiding, this style attracts attention! It’s feminine and simply demanded photos of the front and back. The team used Osis products, including Freeze Pump, Shape Texture and gloss Wax, and dust It mattifying Powder, all available at The beauty Lounge.
