ALSACE

DOMAINE WEINBACH

Situated at the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill, Domaine Weinbach was established in 1612 by Capuchin monks, who were enthralled by the magnificence of the scenery and the quality of the soil. The vineyards that surround the Domaine and which have ever since been known as the ‘Clos des Capucins’ existed before 890 A.D. when the Empress Richarde gave the land to the Abbey of Etival. Sold as State property during the French Revolution, the Domaine was acquired in 1898 by the Faller brothers who left it to their son and nephew, Théo. Théo, a prominent figure in Alsace winegrowing, strove to improve the quality of Alsace wines. As a fervent advocate of the region’s recognition as an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée, he continuously promoted its terroirs and grape varieties. Devoted to Domaine Weinbach, he developed, expanded and enhanced it. Since his death in 1979, his wife Colette and daughters, Catherine and Laurence, have perpetuated Théo’s passion for the great wines of Alsace and his unfailing commitment to delivering excellence. Domaine Weinbach is now regarded as one of the GREAT WINE ESTATES OF THE WORLD.

BORDEAUX

Ets. J-P Moueix

Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, is a wine merchant (négociant) in Libourne. The family moved from the heart of France in the Corrèze, as did many of their neighbours, seeking a better life nearer to the important port of Bordeaux. They settled on the right bank of the River Dordogne in Libourne. Today, the headquarters of Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix line the quays overlooking this mighty river.

Jean-Pierre was succeeded by his son Christian (b. 1946) who joined the business in 1970, becoming Président in 1991 and recently, by Christian’s son Edouard (b. 1977).

This traditional company sells its famous estate-bottled wines and exclusivities only to its own agents and importers abroad. It also distributes wines exclusively for a number of neighbouring estates as well as having a large business selling its generic wines all over the world, often under its own Christian Moueix label.

In the 1950’s, Jean-Pierre Moueix started to acquire several valuable vineyard properties on the Right Bank and has added more to these in recent years, concentrating on the appellations of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. In 2000, Autres Rivages, a second négociant company was formed to concentrate on the Left Bank wines of the Médoc, Graves and Sauternes.

J-P Moueix: Château MAGDELAINE, St-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé 1952, Château HOSANNA, Pomerol 1999 Château LA FLEUR-PÉTRUS, Pomerol 1953 Château TROTANOY, Pomerol , 1953 ( Societe Civile du Ch. Domaine Clarence Dillon In 1934, Mr. Clarence Dillon, the eminent international financier, visited Bordeaux. These were difficult times for the major world economies. Bordeaux had not

been spared by the depression and many of the most renowned vineyards of the region were for sale. Among these featured the illustrious First Growth, Château

Haut-Brion. In Château Haut-Brion, Clarence Dillon found not only the charm of an elegant and fabled estate, but also the opportunity of a lifetime. He

discovered a tarnished jewel.

This estate had sparkled for centuries prior to these difficult times and yet in 1934, Mr. Gibert, the current owner, had not been successful in his bid to give the

estate away to the town of Bordeaux because of the high maintenance costs and meagre returns. It is thanks to these many improvements and innovations, as well

as the great men and women who instituted them, that Château Haut-Brion was able to remain worthy of its noble heritage. In 1983 the Dillon family also

acquired the neighbouring estate of Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Today the Dillons are also responsible for producing the two most famous white wines from

this region: Château Haut-Brion Blanc and Château Laville Haut-Brion The same teams that are in charge for these venerable white wines, also oversee the estates

and vinification of the fabled First Growth as well as the only property of size that over the centuries has consistently rivalled the first Growths both in quality and

price: Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Seventy years after the arrival of Clarence Dillon in Bordeaux, his great-grandson, Prince Robert of Luxembourg, has

opened a new chapter in the Dillon family story in Bordeaux, by creating Clarence Dillon Wines and the new range of reasonably priced Bordeaux Clarendelle

produced by the same team

The Second wines of both Châteaux have recently been renamed, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion is now the 2nd wine of Ch Haut-Brion and La Chapelle de La Mission

Haut-Brion is the 2nd wine of Ch La Mission Haut-Brion and La Clarté de Haut-Brion is a new creation and is the 2nd white wine coming from both Châteaux.

In addition to the above wines being currently available ex-stock, the following wines are available to be ordered directly from the Châteaux cellars in Bordeaux,

vintages and pricing available on special request.

CHATEAU DE FIEUZAL

Ch de Fieuzal, classified Grand Cru in the 1959 classification of Graves is situated in Léognan in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation of Bordeaux. It has been owned by an Irish couple, Brenda and Lochlann Quinn since 2001 and even though it had already garnered a stellar reputation, it has been going from strength to strength each vintage since then. Not only does it produce exceptional red claret, it is perhaps even more famous for the quality of the white wines of the estate even though they are not classified Grand Cru. The recently acquired young winemaker Stephen Carrier is innovative and highly dedicated and is working wonders with the cellar. Hubert de Bouard of Ch. Angelus fame is consulting in the past few vintages for the red wine. The affable Gilles Maligne is in charge of the Commercial side of things.

These wines, though modern in style, still reflect the elegant, even under-stated style of the top wines of the appellation although they are certainly not lacking in concentration. The blend of the red is approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot with 18 to 24 months in one third new oak barrels and with fining but no filtration. The white is roughly two thirds Sauvignon Blanc and one third Semillon, with 12 to 18 months in barrel, of varying proportions of new oak, especially with the Semillon, and with batonnage, fining and no filtration.

Domaine de Perdrix, Nuits St George

Domaine des Perdrix, which possesses thirty acres of vineyards in the prestigious villages in the Côte de Nuits, was taken over by Bertrand and Christiane

Devillard in 1996. The Perdrix Domaine owns an exclusive [Monopole] Premier Cru ‘Aux Perdrix’, a superb vineyard of nine acres but also has substantial plots

in the best parts of Echézeaux making up another three acres.

Low yields, sorting table, long vinification and ageing of most of its wines in new oak barrels are some examples of the Domaine’s commitment to producing the

highest quality wines. Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, Gevrey Chambertin

A marriage of two famous Burgundian families, the Rossignols of Volnay and Trapets of Gevrey, this is a small Domaine, run by Nicolas and Florence Rossignol

at Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard prides itself on its wholly biodynamic approach to viticulture in the vineyard.

The wines are carefully aged in oak and display a firm yet silky structure with that hint of mineral at the core, so typical of Gevrey-Chambertin. Domaine Jacques Prieur, Meursault

Established in Meursault in the late 18th century, Domaine Jacques Prieur has 21 hectares of vine in the greatest terroirs in Burgundy. The Estate has now been taken over by Edouard Labruyère who also owns Château Rouget in Pomerol.

"You can never totally possess a wine estate. You can only be a steward and caretaker of something to pass on to future generations". This quote is particularly true of Jacques Prieur, and the Domaine's history, its wines, and the families that have owned it are the perfect illustration of Burgundy's timeless character. The Domaine's strong point is to bring together under one name a selection of wines from the most prestigious terroirs in Burgundy. From Le Montrachet to Le Chambertin, by way of Le Corton, Les Echézeaux, and Le Musigny, the Domaine owns vineyards in some 22 appellations, including the most mythical in the Côte d'Or. Consisting entirely of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus (except for Clos de Mazeray in Meursault, an exclusivity), the Domaine produces famous white and red wines. However, even the most superb terroir is nothing without experienced, passionate men and women to make the most of it. Since 1870, the families in charge of the Domaine have given priority to providing the utmost care and attention to their vines in order to preserve the soil and provide a fine environment to the vines, all viticultural practices are either sustainable or organic.

The Domaine was established in the heart of the village of Meursault. The vat room, red wine cellar and white wine cellar are appreciated by visitors from all over the world who enjoy the great wines of Burgundy.

By its amazing collection of great terroirs, the Jacques Prieur Estate is at the summit of the hierarchy of the most prestigious Estates in Burgundy, with 20.68 hectares of vines situated within the mostly highly sought after Grand and Premier Crus of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. Jacques Prieur is the only estate in Burgundy to own vines within the five mythic appellations of Chambertin, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot, Corton Charlemagne and Montrachet. Martin Prieur has been running the Estate since 1990 and with winemaker Nadine Gublin has been making exceptional wines from these most prestigious of vineyards.

Domaine Chavy-Chouet. Puligny Montrachet

Domaine Chavy-Chouet in Meursault, or Domaine Hubert & Romaric Chavy as the new name will be, has a firm grip on both Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet,

with about 40 per cent of their land holdings in each village. Since the arrival of Romaric, the son of Hubert, this Domaine has gone from producing 30 000-

40 000 bottles a year to an annual production of 80 000 bottles in 2009

The soil of Les Enseignères has more clay than Bâtard-Montrachet and it is certainly more profound, says Romaric Chavy. The soil is less complex than in the

Bâtard-Montrachet. Both the Bâtard-Montrachet and the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet are on a little slope, but Les Enseignères is totally flat and the soil is rich.

Les Enseignères produces wines which are very round, fresh and easy to drink young. It ages well, but it doesn’t have quite the same structure and complexity as a

good Bâtard.

This appellation, the most southerly in the Côte d’Or, is often overlooked and yet produces some of the finest wine in Burgundy. Domaine de l’Arlot, Nuits-St-Georges Domaine de L’Arlot has long been recognised as one of the finest estates in Nuits-St-Georges, possibly Burgundy’s best known commune. The estate had been run for many years by Jean-Pierre de Smet, who retired in 2007. Jean-Pierre handed over the running of the estate to Olivier Leriche who has been working with him for many years. Jean-Pierre was delighted to have still been in charge for the vinification of the great 2005 vintage with Olivier. One of Jean-Pierre’s earliest influences was working with Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac and as a result, he developed similar winemaking techniques such as whole cluster fermentation which is also practiced Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.

The Domaine is composed of 15 hectares of vineyards, most of which are located in Nuits-St-Georges, with two notable exceptions in Vosne-Romanee and Beaune. Two of these vineyards are monopole holdings, unique specific vineyards with only one owner, both of which are Nuits-St-Georges premier crus: Clos des Forêts St.-Georges and Clos de L’Arlot. The domaine is named after the latter, a vineyard of 4 hectares that surrounds its formidable stone buildings and stone-paved courtyard.

At Domaine de L’Arlot, as at other top wineries throughout the world, great care is taken to produce the healthiest and most concentrated grapes possible. The average age of its vineyards is 25 years, and some vineyards are more than 50 years old. These vineyards produce very low quantities of grapes, partly due to the advanced age of the vines, but also because Jean-Pierre has a policy of severely pruning the vines in order to limit production. A few years ago they chose a biodynamic approach. They plough rather than use herbicides, use only home-made compost in the vineyards, and target yields of 35 hl/ha by green harvesting,

16

when the vignerons cut off bunches of grapes on the vines before ripening to reduce the quantity and improve the quality, during mid summer They are also a rare source of white Nuits St George - and a good one at that. Their 1er Cru red Nuits also show two interesting personalities; the Clos des Fôrets, bordering, as it does, Les St-Georges, reflects the true Nuits character of that land, but in quite a suave way, whereas the Clos de l'Arlot is consistently a fine and delicate wine of real complexity.

Domaine Dujac, Dujac Fils et Père, Morey-St-Denis

Domaine Dujac is one of the outstanding estates of Burgundy and is run by Jacques Seysses and his family. His wines are typified with a light colour, and the

most marvelous aromas imaginable while they also possess great elegance and length. The business has expanded since Jacques’s son Jeremy along with his

daughter-in-law, joined Jacques and have started to put their own influence into the winemaking. In 2001 they began seriously expanding the Domaine's organic

approach and observed that the Premier and Grand Cru are easier to manage using organic viticulture than the vines in the village appellation. They have also

managed to acquire new vineyards including some in Vosnes-Romanée which, from the 2006 vintage, have come into the Dujac estate. Jeremy has also starting

his own independent business with a range of wines under the label Dujac Fils et Père. He has engaged in various supply contracts with like-minded growers

throughout the Côte d’Or. The wines are all vinified along side those of Domaine Dujac, with the same principles and attention to detail. Domaines Comtes Lafon, Meursault Dominique Lafon is one of Burgundies most respected and forward thinking winemakers. He has long been called the “Master of Meursault”. Today he runs one of the finest wine estates in all of France and he is the envy of all his sometimes skeptical neighbours. Down through the years the Domaine Comtes Lafon Estate always had a good reputation but Dominique’s father never worked the land and this is where he felt he had to start from the “Terroir” up. Dominique soon began to experiment with organic and biodynamic growing techniques in the quest for healthier and more superlative fruit, something he felt was missing from traditional growing methods. All his vineyards are now run organically and biodynamically. To him it is a way of life, the natural way. All his efforts have helped is wines establish an international reputation for wines of richness, complexity, precision and balance the very pinnacle of White and Red Burgundy.

Heritiers du Comte Lafon, Maconnais

Dominique Lafon was the first Côte d’Or superstar to expand his holdings into the Mâconnais. He has breathed new life and prestige into these vineyards, in this

region dominated by cooperatives. Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon produce wines ranging from generic Mâcon up to four single-vineyard wines, including the Clos

de la Crochette and Milly Lamartine. First planted with vines by the monks of the once so influent Abbey of Cluny, this 2.6 ha walled vineyard is believed to be

one of the oldest growing sites of Chardonnay in the world hence the name of the village. With the same biodynamic techniques as used in his Meursault domaine,

Lafon has crafted a delicious wine that shows the region’s true potential.

Domaines Raveneau, Chablis

In 1948, Domaine Raveneau was founded in Chablis when Francois Raveneau collected together a set of disparate vineyards owned by himself and his wife's

family. The latter are the Dauvissats, a multi-generation Chablis family that is as famous and almost as well-regarded as Raveneau was to become. The Raveneau

winery consists of three unassuming 17th century warehouses along the Serein River, which splits Chablis and separates the Premier Cru from the Grand Cru

vineyards (the latter lying on the north side facing the afternoon sun).

Raveneau has always been more of a traditionalist, producing a Chablis for each vineyard that he owns, each in the style that is given to him by the weather and

microclimate of that vineyard in that vintage. His wines in general tend to be on the austere side when young, and need time to develop and blossom. However,

between 10 and 20 years, they open up to wines of layered complexity and spectacular depth, revealing the essence of Chardonnay which was hidden in the

structure of the young wine.

Francois Raveneau's wines are very much sought after amongst those who really appreciate Great Chablis with some bottle age. Francois' sons Bernard and Jean-

Marie took over for François in the late 1980s, and have carried on the tradition as well as François' meticulous winemaking style. Most would consider Raveneau

to be the first Growth of Chablis, almost without peer in one of the most hallowed places to grow Chardonnay in the world. Availability very limited, enquiries to

Tollot-Beaut Chorey-lès-Beaune.

This interesting estate has been run by the Tollot family for generations. Of the five members of the family who are currently involved in the business, it is Jean-

Paul who looks after the winemaking. Tollot-Beaut were one of the first Domaines in Burgundy to bottle their own wine in the early 1900’s. The late 1990’s saw

some changes in the vineyards and the cuverie, thus elevating the Domaine to even higher levels of quality. Tollot-Beaut have always been noted for producing

excellent value wines. Their Chorey les Beaune is regarded by many as the finest of the appellation and the benchmark for a good value village Burgundy.

Another of the estate’s popular wines is the Savigny-Lès-Beaune Champ Chevrey a 1er Cru Monopole that consistently produces delicious, well structured wines.

Domaine Antonin Guyon, Savigny-Lès-Beaune

For a number of reasons this domain seems to fly under the radar of many consumers, being somewhat low-key on the PR front. With 48 hectares of owned vines

– many rated at premier cru and higher – one might expect the domaine to have a higher profile, given the very ‘above-average’ quality of the wines one might

expect doubly-so. The fact is that the owners are more than happy to have their wines placed quietly with prestigious restaurants in France – indeed in the rest of

Europe too. Over 80% of their production is exported.

Dominique Guyon and his brother Michel control the business that was started by their father Antonin in the 1960′s. Antonin was relatively mature when set out on his vine-owning journey – 55 – buying his first parcels in Gevrey and Meursault. The biggest single addition to the family’s holdings came in 1970 after Dominique had patiently accumulated hundreds of small parcels from ~80 Hautes Côtes de Nuits growers in Meuilly into a single, 22 hectare, block of south-facing vines. Based in Savigny-lès-Beaune the domain owns a fine range of vines from around the hill of Corton but their northern limits are in Gevrey, southern in Meursault, western in the aforementioned Hautes Côtes de Nuits and to the east in Chorey-lès-Beaune. Very much a hidden of the Cote d’Or!

ITALY

CASTELLO BANFI

Castello Banfi was established by Giovanni Mariani, who named it after his favourite aunt, Teodolinda Banfi, who was housekeeper to the Cardinal in Milan, later

to become Pope.

Giovanni passed his love and knowledge of fine wines to his sons, John and Harry Mariani, who now head the present generation of the Mariani family. The

Mariani family has been devoted to helping others enjoy the pleasures and benefits of fine wines, especially those from Italy. In 1978, the Mariani took their

dedication one step further. Together with eminent enologist Cav. Ezio Rivella, they set out to create a vineyard estate like none before in one of the world’s most

beloved viticultural regions – Southern Tuscany. They discovered the ideal location near the medieval town of Montalcino. The unique microclimate there

produces warm days, plenty of the sun’s nourishing rays, cool nights and just enough moisture to nuture a rugged, calcified soil strangely ideal for the cultivation of

noble vines. To complement their viticultural estate, the Marianis built an extraordinary winery that lies on and under the ground in the valley below the Castello.

Today, their 11th century fortress, Castello Poggio alle Mura is surrounded by more than 7,100 acres of vine.

Through the efforts of the Mariani family and Ezio Rivella, Castello Poggio alle Mura, is regarded as Tuscany’s premier vineyard estate, winning many awards

both nationally and internationally.

G. D. VAJRA

Aldo and Milena Vaira and their children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro are one of the most dedicated and charming families in the world of wine. Giuseppe and Francesca are already returning to the home place having studied Oenology in Turin and Business at the Bocconi in Milan respectively. Isidoro has rugby on his mind at the moment! All three are fully immersed in the family business. Their vineyards, high up in the village of Vergne, look right down on the rooftops of the village of Barolo itself. The altitude and indeed the personalities of the family, combine to produce some of the most elegant and fine Baroli on the market. Not alone that, but they have a range of Barbera, Dolcetto, Langhe Rosso ( nebbiolo) and Langhe Bianco (Riesling). There is also a Moscato d'Asti and famously, a serious, barrel aged Freisa called Kyè ( meaning "what is it?") . They work to biodynamic principles and are among some of the most revered winemakers in Italy.

SPAIN Rioja CVNE ( or Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España) or Cune as it is better known, is a clutch of wineries in and around Haro in Rioja Alta and Alavesa. Founded in 1879 by Raimondo and Eusebio Real de Asúa, all three wineries are still owned by descendents of the same family. Cune is the most traditional, based in the heart of Haro, with a roof designed by the Gustave Eiffel studio. In direct contrast is the ultra-modern, almost space-age winery near El Ciego which is the home of Viña Real. Tucked in under the hill with its dramatic modern winery is the boutique winery, Contino, based on 16th century cellars. All the wines, including the very famous Imperial and Monopole brands show the essence of the wines of Rioja.

Merlot-Merlot was named because they had several blends in the cellars and to differentiate for the cellar hands, when they said Merlot-Merlot they meant the 100% Merlot! On the other hand, the Shiraz-Syrah is so-called because they have trained the vines, some in the Syrah bush style of the Rhône in France and others on wires as you would find in New World Shiraz. U.S.A. Our American Portfolio is a group of small, family-owned top end wineries based mainly in Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Bruce Cakebread has paid many visits to Ireland and his tastings are always very well received. The now-retired Jim Allen, an Irishman, from Sequoia Grove was well-known here for a very long time and his bonhomie was legendary! Joseph Phelps and Saint Francis are both well-known cellars in California and the Insignia is a very famous and rare wine. L’Aventure Estate in Paso Robles is a joint venture, partly owned by our good friend Dominique Meneret whose Domaine de Courteillac Bordeaux is one of our favourite clarets. We also carry some wines from Benziger in Sonoma Valley and along with the more commercial wines of Beringer, we are also able to acquire their top cuvees.

CHILE Seña – originally a joint venture between Eduardo Chadwick of Errazuriz and Caliterra and Robert Mondavi of Napa fame, now belongs wholly to Eduardo. It is an icon wine of Chile, based on a Bordeaux-style blend of six varieties, Cabvernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, Petiti Verdot and Malbec. Casa Silva is a family estate, owned by Mario Pablo Silva and his family, in the Colchagua valley and makes exemplary wines right across the varietal range and the Quinta Generación wine is a blend of several varieties. Many of the wines come from single vineyards such as Lollol or Angostura, and are based on the various soils and microclimates to be found in this enormous valley which runs right out towards the Pacific Ocean. The De Martino Family have long been established in the Maipo Valley, not far south of Santiago. The family, together with their gifted and much admired winemaker Marcelo Retamal, make a vast range of wines from entry level right up to their icon Family wines.

The De Bortoli family are well-known in Ireland and their wines have been distributed here for many years. They have a vast range but less well known are their incredibly fine wines from the Yarra Valley. Steve Webber, who is the husband of Leanne De Bortoli is know considered one of Australia’s top experts of Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay. His policy of sending his young winemakers away to Burgundy and the Rhône to study under the iconic names of both regions has paid off in the production of some truly marvelous wines. The Shiraz Viognier below is in stock but he has a wide range of even more impressive wines at the top which can be ordered specially for those who would like to try them. They are winning prizes and medals all over the world. Please ask for more information from Febvre. Bill Martin of Clairault Vineyards in Western Australia is an Athlone man married to a Galway woman and is in the process now of handing over the vineyards and restaurant business to their three sons. Notred as one of the top vineyards in Margaret River, the Clairault wines are winning prizes everywhere. Apart from the wines we stock, other wines are available to order at the top end of the scale.

NEW ZEALAND

CRAGGY RANGE WINERY This is a story of dreams that came true, for Terry Peabody and Steve Smith, Master of Wine, and their families. A tale of two families: Terry Peabody and his family had searched for ten years to find the place and the people that could fulfil a dream, that they could make some of the best wine in the world. That led Terry, in 1997, to Steve Smith and to the development of Craggy Range Vineyards. Together they set a plan to buy the best vineyard land, select some parcels of grapes grown by the country’s best farmers, and to choose a place for their homes, cellars and country restaurant. Their aim was to make single-vineyard wines, wines that are true expressions of the vineyard’s terroir, that will compete with the best in the world. No small goal and one that is not achieved without considerable effort. This plan has now brought us the excellent wines from Craggy Range. They have developed important vineyards in all the main wine producing regions of New Zealand. The Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir are both from the Te Muna Vineyards in Martinborough. The Te Kahu Merlot Cabernet from the Gimblett Gravels of Hawkes Bay, the new arrival Glasnevin Gravels Riesling from Waipara. Other new single vineyard wines include the Kidnappers Chardonnay and Block 14 Syrah both from Hawkes Bay. They have also developed some very fine single vineyard Pinot Noirs in the Otago region. Craggy’s “Icon Wine” is the Le Sol, a splendid highly acclaimed Syrah from Gimblett Road sub-region in Hawkes Bay. www.craggyrange.com RED WINES CR02RB04 Hawkes Bay 2004 CRAGGY RANGE SOPHIA MERLOT/CABERNET FRANC 6 €2 8.90 €173.40 CR02RB06 Hawkes Bay 2006 CRAGGY RANGE SOPHIA MERLOT/CABERNET FRANC 6 €2 8.90 €173.40 CR01RA06 Hawkes Bay 2006 CRAGGY RANGE TE KAHU MERLOT CABERNET 12 €19.35 €232.20 CR03RB07 Hawkes Bay 2007 CRAGGY RANGE LE SOL SYRAH 6 €48.50 €291.00 CR04RA06 Martinborough 2006 CRAGGY RANTE TE MUNA PI NOT NOIR 12 €24.50 €294.00 CR04RA08 Martinborough 2008 CRAGGY RANTE TE MUNA PI NOT NOIR 12 €24.50 €294.00 CR06RA06 Hawkes Bay 2006 CRAGGY RANGE BLOCK 14 SYRA H 12 €22.50 €270.00 WHITE WINES CR50WA09 Martinborough 2008 CRAGGY RANGE TE MUNA SA UVIGNON BLANC 12 €15.40 €184.80 CR55WA08 Waipara 2008 CRAGGY RANGE GLASNEVIN GRAVEL S RIESLING 12 €16.50 €198.00 CR56WA08 Hawkes Bay 2008 CRAGGY RANGE KIDNAPPERS CH ARDONNAY 12 €16.50 €198.00

SOUTH AFRICA

MEERLUST ESTATE Long recognized for producing world-class wines, Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, the traditional dedication to the

art of winemaking continues under the guidance of Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation custodian of this seventeenth-century national monument. Meerlust, with its historic manor house, classic wine cellar, family cemetery, dovecote and bird sanctuary is situated fifteen kilometers south of Stellenbosch, with the blue crescent of False Bay a mere five kilometres away. The Estate is uniquely positioned for the production of wines with exceptional complexity and character. In the summertime, ocean breezes and evening mists roll in from the coast to cool the vineyards. The grapes ripen slowly, thus achieving full, concentrated varietal flavours. The soil consists of predominantly deep, well drained Hutton and Clovelly soil types, affording the vines excellent drought resistance and an ideal

substrata for producing concentrated, complex wines. One hundred and ten hectares are planted with varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir. www.meerlust.com. HAMILTON RUSSELL ESTATE

Hamilton Russell Vineyards – one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea - is located in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus. The Estate specialises in producing highly individual, terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in South Africa and among the best in the New World. Founder, Tim Hamilton Russell purchased the undeveloped 170 hectare property in 1975, after an exhaustive search for the most southerly site on which to make South Africa’s top cool climate wines from a selection of noble varieties. His son Anthony Hamilton Russell, who took over in 1991 (finally buying the property in 1994), narrowed the range to Pinot noir and Chardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. Extensive soil research initiated in 1994 identified 52 hectares of stony, clay-rich, shale-derived soil as optimal for the individual, origin expressive style they aim for and all plantings have now been limited to this soil type. Anthony, with winemaker Hannes Storm and viticulturist Johan Montgomery are completely dedicated to expressing the personality of the Hamilton Russell Vineyards terroir in their wines. Tiny yields and intense worldwide demand keep the elegant, highly individual, Estate grown Pinot noir and Chardonnay in very short supply. www.hamiltonrussellvineyards.co.za

PLAISIR DE MERLE The history of Plaisir de Merle is a story of exceptional people who helped create a proud viticultural heritage that lives on today. The farm dates back to 1687 when the French Huguenot, Charles Marais and his family were granted land by Governor Simon van der Stel. They named the farm Le Plessis Marly after the small village from which they had come in France. In 1964 Plaisir de Merle was purchased by Stellenbosch Farmers' Winery (now Distell) from its most recent owners, the Gray family, and today is one of the largest wine farms in the Cape. Covering 974 hectares, it consists of five adjoining sections, namely Plaisir de Merle, Rust-en-Vrede, Drostersnes, La Rochelle and Rachelsfontein.

It has often been said that good wines begin in the soil and at Plaisir de Merle the quality of the arable land is undeniably excellent. This factor and an abundant supply of fresh mountain water, contribute to the excellence of the end product. In addition, biological control of pests is utilised to prevent contamination of the vines and surrounding vegetation.

The new cellar which houses wine production at Plaisir de Merle represents a minor architectural triumph. Designed by architect Chris de Hart and completed in 1993, it is a harmonious blend of functionalism and aesthetics. The allegorical mural sculptures and mouldings which emblazon its walls were designed and executed by artist Jan Corewijn, and the huge central mural which graces the cellar's entrance pays symbolic tribute to the families that played a significant role in the history of the farm.

Inside the cellar, equipment has been deliberately kept basic, reflecting a philosophy of simplicity as opposed to excessive sophistication. The focus is on noble cultivars only.

WARRE’S VINTAGE PORTS This famous Port house was founded in 1670, just five years after the Great Plague and then the Great Fire of London. It was the first of all the English Port Houses to set up in Northern Portugal. The first member of the family arrived in Oporto, the historic capital of the Port industry, in 1729. There he built a “ lodge” in Vila Nova de Gaia and married the sister of John Whitehead who built the famous “Factory House” in Oporto, the heart of the port trade. In 1905, Andrew James Symington became a partner in the business. In 1960 the Warre family sold their shares to the Symington family. However, the present William Warre, a Master of Wine, oversees the sales of Warre’s in the U.K. Warre’s make all styles of Port, including white ports, ruby, late bottled vintage, their single quinta vintage Port , Quinta da Cavadinha, and at the top of the ladder, Warre’s Vintage. Vintage ports must be bottled just over two years after the vintage and true vintage ports are only declared in very good vintages. The declared Warre vintages in recent times are: ‘45/ ‘47/’50/’55/’58/’60/’63/’66/’70/’75/’77/’80/’83/’85 & ’91. Notes on each vintage are available on request. www.warre.com

QUINTA DO VESUVIO Quinta do Vesuvio is the most spectacular Quinta in the Douro valley and is also owned by the Symington Family. Located in the wild and serenely beautiful eastern reaches of the Upper Douro valley, 120 kilometres east of Oporto and 45 kilometres from the Spanish border, Quinta do Vesuvio stands alone both in terms of remoteness and sheer grandeur. Vesuvio’s superb terroir is defined by a complex and unique combination of microclimates and soil conditions, ideal for producing the grapes used to make Port and wine. Quinta do Vesuvio was built to be the finest Quinta in the Douro valley and to see it today, there is no doubt that it is. All picking is done by hand, with a careful selection being made.
