As a complement to its auction preview, Skinner invites you to participate in its Jewelry Clinic, hosted by Mr. Hagop Matossian from Bostonian Jewelers. Mr. Matossian, an antique and period jewelry restoration expert, is viewed by his peers in the industry as a pioneer in laser restoration techniques. For the past 25 years, he has collaborated with dealers and private collectors on restoration and alteration projects. He will be available for individual consultations concerning items in the auction throughout the afternoon. All preview attendees invited.

Note: Friedlich graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1982, and this piece is representative of his early work. According to his Web site, Friedlichs influences include the American southwest, Japanese art and architecture, Isamu Noguchi, and Richard Diebenkorn. Note: For a similar example, see Zobel: 30 Jahre Schmuck aus Lust und Leidenschaft by Dr. Johann-Peter Regelmann, no. 11. Michael Zobel was born in Tangier, Morocco, in 1941, and trained in Pforzheim, Germany, at the School for Arts & Crafts. His jewelry combines aspects of the wearable and the theatrical, as evidenced by the suite offered here. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and several European institutions hold examples of his work. $800-1,200

Note: Pictured in Metamorphoses, by Ilias Lalaounis, p. 32, and described as reminiscent of the pure, simple forms of prehistoric art. $2,500-3,500 68. Pair of 22kt Gold and Butterfly Wing Brooches, Lilly Fitzgerald, each composed of butterfly wings, pieced together by the artist to create intricate designs using the natural patterns and markings of the wings, in bold frames with quartz crystals, dia. 1 1/4 in., unsigned. Note: These pins were purchased directly from the artist at Crafts at the Castle, 2004, at Hynes Convention Center, Boston, where Fitzgerald was awarded first prize. Artist-Designed 18kt Gold and Enamel Oiseaux Brooch, Georges Braque, designed as two abstract form en plein enamel birds flying above a textured cloud, 2 3/4 x 2 in., French makers mark, no. 218, signed Bijoux de G. Braques, (enamel stress). Note: Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a contemporary of Picasso and founder of the Cubist movement. He was the first modern master whose jewelry was exhibited during his lifetime at the Louvre, which subsequently purchased twelve of his hundred designs for its Galerie dApollon. The exhibition traveled throughout the world for nineteen years. Birds, which appear often in Braques late work, symbolized creative aspiration for the artist. $5,000-7,000 70. Artist-Designed 18kt Gold and Enamel Ring, Piero Dorazio, composed of three bands with six enamel bars, joining to form one of Dorazios vibrantly colored geometric pictures, size 6 1/4, no. 23/25, marked Gm for Gem Montebello, and PD. Note: Piero Dorazio (1927-2005) began his career studying architecture in Rome and was a leading figure in bringing the avantgarde into Italy. An invitation from Harvard University brought him to the United States in 1953, putting him in touch with Abstract Expressionists Marc Rothko, Robert Motherwell, Willem de Kooning, and others. He also exhaustively read Kandinskys essays on immaterial aspects in painting, which would greatly influence his work. His compositions of the 1960s contrasted rich colors and geometric forms, which dominate his work from that time on. $4,000-6,000 71. 18kt Gold Bracelet, Barbara Heinrich, the tubular form of textured half moon links with polished edges, 19.3 dwt, lg. 8 in., makers mark. Note: Born in Heilbronn, Germany, Barbara Heinrich began creating jewelry out of noodles, and then silver wire and glass beads, that she sold in her home town. Later, after formal jewelry-making instruction, she won a scholarship in Germany to further her education in the United States. With a master's degree from RIT, everything from memories of childhood fairy tales to simple, natural, forms inspire Heinrich's pieces, which are as much a gifts to [her] as they are to you. $800-1,200
