Friday October 14th, 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Open to RegistrantsCreating a Standard Process for the Project ManagerSkilled and experienced Project Managers can be difficult to find in the signage industry. It becomes easier to train Project Management staff across accounts if there is an effective standard process in place. This workshop is designed to provide participants the knowledge on creating a standard process that will provide continuity with your project teams. Participants will develop skills to implement a standard process with their project management teams. This will enable small and large offices to share resources across accounts.

Friday October 14th, 10:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Open to RegistrantsProject Management ChallengesThis is an interactive session; participants will identify the top 10 challenges they are currently facing with their projects. During the session participates will engage in discussions on methodology to prevent or reduce risks of project challenges. Even with proactive steps sometimes things just go wrong. It is important on how we respond to those challenges that will make or break a key relationship with our customers. Come prepared to engage and enjoy the hands on discussion.

Both seminars presented by Karen VanhoySr. Project Manager/Training Coordinator with Allen Industries, Inc.

The innovation in wide format printing has opened up a host of opportunities for sign, graphics and visual communication companies. A new white paper, “Wide Format Print Trends, Opportunities & Challenges,” (www.signs.org/Resources/IndustryResearch.aspx) explores the latest information in this rapidly expanding area of the sign industry. Compiled by InfoTrends, the white paper explores the trends and how they can be parlayed into opportunities.

This white paper on wide format print joins a growing body of information on business-building ideas from ISA and InfoTrends. “Wide Format Cutting Devices, an Overview for Sign Companies,” (iweb.signs.org/iweb/Purchase/ProductDetail.aspx?Product_code=STAT-14) “Digital Print Substrates”(iweb.signs.org/iweb/Purchase/ProductDetail.aspx?Product_code=DIG-05) and “Digital Textile Printing Opportunities” (iweb.signs.org/iweb/Purchase/ProductDetail.aspx?Product_code=STAT-12) also explore ways to maximize print options.

Expanded Resource Guide for Electronic Message CentersAs a result of the International Sign Association’s efforts to educate planners about reasonable sign codes, more than 200 communities have already adopted the night-time brightness recommendations for EMCs. To continue these efforts, ISA has expanded its popular publication “Night-time Brightness Level Recommendations for On-Premise Electronic Message Centers” (www.signs.org/GovernmentRelations/ResourcesforLocalOfficials.aspx#emcs).

This newly expanded version offers more information and guidance on measuring brightness levels of EMCs, including:

• More details on how to measure brightness levels with and without operational control, • New case studies of communities that have successfully adopted the brightness guidelines, and• Scientifically researched, yet understandable, brightness level recommendations from lighting scientist Dr. Ian Lewin.

Article continues on the following page

6

Mid-South Messenger - October 2016

The recommended brightness levels still remain .3 footcandles above ambient lighting. Not well versed in illumination measurements? The publication also provides a brief introduction to EMCs and explains what footcandles are. To help your community stay informed, we encourage you to download the expanded version and share it with local officials (www.signs.org/PDF/EMC_Recommendations_Refresh_FINAL.pdf).

The publication is just the latest in a growing body of information available about EMCs. In 2012, the Signage Foundation published research from Texas A&M University, which found no link between the addition of an EMC and traffic accidents. It is available at www.thesignagefoundation.org/trafficsafety. The Signage Foundation’s research into the economic impact of illuminated signs—including EMCs—is also available at www.thesignagefoundation.org/library.

If you’d like more information about the expanded publication or if you need sign code assistance, please contact ISA’s David Hickey, vice president of advocacy at (703) 836-4012 or [email protected].

A new rule issued by the U.S. Department of Labor will impact 4.2 million salaried workers, making them eligible for overtime pay.

1. Salary threshold has increased to $47,476 ($913 a week). This has more than doubled the overtime threshold and is estimated to impact 4.2 million salaried employees who are classified as exempt.

2. Duties test is unchanged. This is the basic test for determining who in your organization remains exempt from the overtime eligibility. It currently stands as: • The employee must make over the new salary threshold of $47,476; • The employee must be salaried; • The must perform exempt duties (www.dol.gov/whd/overtime/fs17a_overview.pdf) (executive, administrative or professional).

3. Salary threshold will automatically increase every 3 years to keep up with inflation. Based on wage growth projections, the threshold is expected to rise to more than $51,000 with the first update on January 1, 2020.

4. Deadline to implement and comply with the new rule is December 1, 2016.

5. Up to 10 percent of the salary can come from bonuses or commissions. A salaried employee’s bonuses or commissions can satisfy up to 10 percent of the minimum threshold for the overtime exemption. They must be non-discretionary and paid on a quarterly or more frequent basis.

Attorney Bryance Metheny, a partner at Burr & Forman, will lead a webinar on Thursday, September 29 at 2 p.m. ET (www.signs.org/EducationEvents/ISASignAcademy/UpcomingWebinars.aspx#DOL) to show how the rule will impact sign and graphics companies, how companies can comply and why compliance is important. He also will provide practical tools to help sign and graphics companies better manage their businesses.

The webinar is free for ISA and Affiliated Association custom sign company members or $50 for nonmembers – register now(www.signs.org/EducationEvents/ISASignAcademy/UpcomingWebinars.aspx#DOL). ISA also has additional information about the overtime rule here on their website. (www.signs.org/Resources/TechnicalRegulatoryResources/DepartmentofLaborOvertimeRule.aspx.)

How to Use the Color Blue with Channel Letters

Is your client considering blue for their face color? Be sure to pass along these blue usage guidelines. This color may have challenges when specified for a channel letter sign.

Blue has many positive qualities as a sign and branding color. For example, trust, honesty and loyalty are associated with blue (“true blue”.) Banks and insurance companies sometimes have blue included in their branding colors due to these positive associations.

However, blue acrylic tends to absorb much of the letter illumination rather than emitting it. This is particularly true of darker blue shades. Illuminating dark blue is similar to illuminating a black letter, and that is difficult.

In addition, blue tends to cause more of what is called “disability glare” than other colors. The lens of the human eye cannot focus sharply on blue lights because blue light focuses slightly in front of the retina. That may cause a distracting halo around bright blue lighting. By comparison, both red and green focus precisely on the retina.

So blue must be used carefully with channel letter signage. What are some potential solutions?

One possible legibility solution is to use white acrylic instead, and place a “reveal” blue vinyl configuration on the face. That still provides your client with their blue coloring, but is much more legible because of the white border that frames the blue on the letter face.

Another option is to ask your client if they would consider a lighter blue acrylic shade. A lighter shade may improve the night visibility.

Finally, perforated vinyl could be specified. Standard white perforated vinyl can be digitally printed to blue. That would provide a blue day appearance but a white appearance at night.

Thank You Notes From 2016 Recipients of the MSSA Steve Metheny Scholarship Foundation

“I would like to thank the Mid-South Sign Association and Mr. Steve Metheny for awarding me the MSSA scholarship. This is my second year receiving the scholarship and I really appreciate it! I will be starting my sophomore year at the University of Tennessee at Martin and will have money to apply towards textbooks and other material I may need. I’m also hoping to study abroad one semester in Japan soon and the money I have been awarded by the Steve Metheny will help me achieve my goal! Thank you to Mr. Steve Metheny and everyone else who helps put this together every year. I look forward to meeting many of you at the conference this year!”

Katharine Wilson

“Thank you MSSA for the Steve Metheny Foundation Scholarship! This is the first out of school scholarship I have received, and it will undoubtedly propel my education forward. To everyone at MSSA, your efforts to fund young adults’ educations are greatly appreciated. Thanks again.”

“Thank you MSSA for the Steve Metheny Foundation Scholarship and for helping to assist me with my college expenses so that I can focus on my classes and advance a step closer to achieving my dreams.”

M’isha Hughes

“I would like to express my appreciation for being selected as a scholarship recipient by Mid-South Sign Association. It is a great feeling to be recognized by a group of outstanding leaders in this industry. I look forward to my future education at UNC Chapel Hill and appreciate your support and financial contribution.”

David Alexander Laws

“Hello my name is Weston Stofel, and I am a recipient of the Steve Metheny Scholarship. I am currently going into my senior year at the University of Tennessee at Martin. I have received this scholarship three out of the four years for my degree. I was un-eligible for last year because we could not attend the sign convention. This past year we did make it. This scholarship has been a great blessing to me and my family. The money provided has allowed me, along with other scholarships, to pay for my college tuition without student loans. As I go into my senior year, I am looking to the future and how I will add to our family business. I love the sign business and enjoy the work we do every day. Every summer I have worked on the road crew at ColumbiaNeon. I am extremely grateful to receive this scholarship and hope to contribute to MSSA one day so other aspiring students can get a higher education.”

Weston Stofel

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all who are involved within the MSSA Scholarship program and assure them that their efforts will help me in so many different ways. Receiving this scholarship will cover my entire fall 2016 tuition for Florida State College at Jacksonville and aid in allowing me to save money for my future transfer to Florida State University in Tallahassee. This is my second year receiving the scholarship and I feel it will be just as beneficial now as it was in 2015.”

“Thank you so much for the scholarship and for helping me further my education at the University of Tennessee. I am so excited to attend UTK and look forward to seeing where the future takes me.”

Jaclyn Young

“There can be no other way to put it than to just say it up front, THANK YOU ALL for allowing me to receive this scholarship for the upcoming school year. I will enter my fall semester without the usual fear when paying tuition balances and purchasing books and supplies. I am ready to start this next semester and of course I’m more than ready to finish this chapter of my life and to start on the next.I do not know how many years Mr. Metheny has been awarding these scholarships, but I do know that there has to be a great number of students and former students that will remember his generosity for their entire lives. I also believe there is a good chance that I may run into another recipient down the road sometime.”

Jill Laurie

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generosity in selecting me to be a recipient of the Steve Metheny Scholarship Foundation. I am honored to be chosen as a recipient of this award.I am currently a junior majoring in Accounting at Louisiana State University. I plan to graduate in May 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree and then attend Graduate school to obtain my Master’s in Accounting. While attending LSU full-time, I also have a part-time job to help pay for tuition and gain experience. It is not always easy to juggle work and school therefore, I am truly grateful for the assistance that I am receiving because of this scholarship. When I graduate, I hope that I can use what I learned at LSU to make a difference in people’s lives, the same way that you have made a difference in mine.”

Amy Speer

“I am honored to be one of the recipients for the 2016 MSSA Steve Metheny Foundation Scholarship. I want to say thank you for generously awarding me this scholarship and helping me continue my education at a higher level. I am so excited to be attending The University of Tennessee this fall. This award will allow me to focus on my education and start my journey through college.”
