A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

At a recent Chamber luncheon, I was asked by a new business owner how

she could become a more active part of the Roseville community. She realized that

community activism not only made good business sense, but was part of her personal mission to make Roseville a better place to live.

The Roseville Chamber has worked hard to establish programs that help our members link their businesses with the community. One of our most successful programs is

Leadership Roseville which is designed to educate and develop effective community leaders. This year-long program helps stimulate future leaders by giving them an overview of how business and government

affect our community. Graduates are encouraged to use what they have learned to become more active and engaged in leading our community forward.

I recently had a chance to congratulate this year’s class at its graduation and am encouraged to see so many talented people wanting to offer their skills to our community.

Another successful program is Business, Educators & Community Organized to Maximize Education (BECOME). This partnership strategically links the business

community with our five area school districts in order to help students become productive and responsible members of our community. The program puts on two signature events each year: Principal for a Day and the BECOME Student Recognition Awards.

Each of these programs are designed to help our local businesses use their talents and skills to strengthen our community. If you would like to learn more about either of these programs, give us a call at 916-783-8136.

A publication of the Roseville Chamber of Commerce, the Insight newsletter is produced bi-monthly.

GOOD NEWS FROM THE CEO

Wendy GerigRoseville Chamber of Commerce

Roseville Chamber of Commerce, serving Roseville and Granite Bay, is proud to be an accredited four-star Chamber of Commerce. The Accreditation Program was instituted by the U.S. Chamber to recognize effective organization performance. Only 10% of the Chambers throughout the nation successfully complete the accreditation process for this voluntary program and less than 1.2% achieve four-star status.

Proven Networking TipsBeing in this industry for almost 25 years I have had the opportunity to pick up a few networking

tips along the way. Here are some ways the Roseville Chamber can help you and your business connect with other local people and businesses:

1. Show up. Attending events is the best and easiest way for local businesses and people to get to know you and your business.

2. Be prepared. Practice your 30-second commercial. It is beneficial to have an overview of your product or service that gets the point across in a clear and concise manner. Also, be sure to have plenty of business cards ready.

3. Set a goal. Discern why you are networking and what you want to get out of it. Have a firm idea of what you’re aiming for and set a goal to meet it whether it includes the number of people you want to connect with or the number of business cards you want to collect.

4. Communicate well. Be interested in the person and not the opportunity. Your genuine interest in what they do and how they benefit the community is what will come across most effectively.

5. Utilize the Chamber. The staff at the Chamber is here to help your business and give you the resources and services you need to be successful.

6. Follow-up and keep to your word. A friendly email, quick phone call or personal hand-written note can go a long way in making lasting connections.

7. Return the favor. If you get a referral or business as a result of networking then send someone their way as a sign of appreciation.

“Road Map To Success” are the first words you will see plastered on the

homepage of the new Roseville Chamber of Commerce website. Those words were carefully chosen to be the exact message we wanted to communicate as people first visit our site.

The Roseville Chamber of Commerce wants to ensure that we are the prime resource for our members and that we are optimizing all areas of the Chamber to keep up with this dynamic and technical age.

The new website is easy to navigate, aesthetically appealing with picturesque graphics and a clean layout.

Augustine Ideas has an incredibly talented and innovative team that helped us create this website that encapsulates all of the goals we had for the redesign.

We met with several Chamber companies to find the best fit for our vision and Augustine Ideas aligned perfectly.

The Chamber worked closely with the member-driven website taskforce to cover all aspects of the redesign. The process took four months in total. Augustine Ideas was the ideal member to execute the Chamber’s vision for Roseville as they are passionate about being an active member of the community and Chamber.

Be sure to check out these new features: it is now mobile responsive, members can post their member to member discounts, the blog is housed on the site and there is an option to advertise within the site. Overall, we wanted to ensure that the site is easy to use and an effective casalyst to help people engage with fellow members and the community.

The Hot Pink Fun Run is a family event and is geared to individuals of all ages, fitness

levels and abilities. It encourages the entire community to participate – walkers, runners, stroller striders and even pets. The excitement begins bright and early on Sunday, October 6th at the Civic Center Plaza on Vernon Street in Downtown Roseville. There are a variety of runs you can participate in - 5K, 10K and 1-Mile run - all to raise money for breast cancer research.

The goals of the run are to increase awareness of breast health issues and to raise funds for local breast cancer research. It is also a time to honor those currently undergoing treatment, breast cancer survivors, and the family members and friends who love and support them. The Hot Pink Fun Run is a great way for area residents to connect with the community because there is something for everyone, whether you are a casual walker or a serious runner.

The Placer Breast Cancer Endowment and Race Director, Aldo Pineschi, invite you to join this community event in even more significant ways than racing that day. Consider joining your fellow Chamber members Bill

McAnally Racing NAPA AutoCare Center, Union Bank, and North Valley

Bank in becoming a business sponsor. And, since the Hot Pink Fun Run is 100%

organized and facilitated by a team of volunteers, there is always a need for more

help. If you are passionate about finding a cure for breast cancer, consider joining the

planning committee or volunteering on the day of the event.

So, come on October 6th. Dress in hot pink and mix with the sea of

community members to share strength and positivity in the fight

against breast cancer. From T-shirts to tutus, from babies in

pink to poodles in pink, from senior to child, this is a vibrant reminder of what community can do. Visit the honor wall,

where race participants can write personal messages to

the people in their lives affected by breast cancer – the mom, the aunt, the

sister and the best friend. In all ways it is a day to send the

message of hope.

The Hot Pink Fun Run raises funds toward the goal of establishing an

Endowed Chair at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. This critical position will expand local breast cancer research, clinical trials and treatment options to benefit women across the region.

Transparency and connecting with the community are top priorities for the City of Roseville. Both elements are essential to good governing, and in an

evolving and expanding communications landscape, they often work hand-in-hand.

The City’s website (www.roseville.ca.us) is a regional leader in accessibility and information. It was recently enhanced to make it even easier to find the information residents and businesses need. We created action-word menus to help people access the services and staff members they need with fewer clicks.

Furthermore, the City has launched a Virtual City Hall initiative to look for new opportunities to provide cost-effective ways to interact with and deliver services through the variety of devices our online visitors use, whether desktop computers, or web-enabled phones, devices and tablets.

The City’s website offers a variety of special interest and general interest e-newsletters and alerts to which you can subscribe (www.roseville.ca.us/subscribe). Topics include general city news, business news, job opportunities, public safety and neighborhood news and several others.

Of course you can find us on Facebook and Twitter with general city news, public safety news, and information about parks, recreation programs, libraries, our community-owned utilities, traffic and other topics. Our social media center at www.roseville.ca.us/socialmedia has a complete list.

As we grow as a city and opportunities to engage with our residents evolve, we are prepared to remain the forefront of transparency and community engagement, both in person and online.

Blazing the Trail for Transparency and Community EngagementRay Kerridge, City ManagerCity of Roseville

Join us for the biggest event of the summer in Roseville: SPLASH 2013 on September 14th. The 18th annual SPLASH

event will take place at the beautiful Roseville Aquatics Complex. Join us poolside for Roseville’s best party of the year. Enjoy music from Cover Me Badd, exhibits from local artists and delicious food and spirits from the region.

We are excited this year to have several local restaurants, breweries and wineries aboard to provide tasty food and spirits. This is the opportunity of the year to meet and support your community.

Le Ride is offering a complimentary designated driver service for all the attendees to get home safely. Give them a call at 916-526-0112 to schedule a ride. The sponsors and

community support are overwhelming as we gear up for this electrifying party. A portion of all proceeds will be donated to the City of Roseville Parks and Recreation Department At-Risk Youth Programs. For more information or to purchase your tickets check out the Chamber’s website at www.rosevillechamber.com.

Sharon BrownBright Beginnings

The opportunity arose for me to start a business welcoming new homeowners when I moved from Southern to Northern California. Having moved more than 25 times myself I could relate to the new homeowners. Placer County

has hundreds of people moving here every month, which made it the perfect growth area.

In 1994, Bright Beginnings initiated its service by joining the Chamber of Commerce and then I became an Ambassador, which instantly infiltrated me into the community. Being an ambassador is monumentally advantageous as it gives me recognition and helps increase my business profile.

New homeowners receive a packet from Bright Beginnings containing a letter of welcome and dozens of generous gift cards. The gift cards are for services or items that a typical new homeowner needs. The program has been successful as many of the clients have been with us for 10 to 12 years and some even 19 years.

I always encourage business owners to reach out and utilize the tools and benefits the Chamber provides. We are so fortunate to be members of a Chamber that is vibrant and that listens to its membership’s concerns; then goes above and beyond to provide what we need as business people.

The Bright Beginnings website (brightbeginnings.net) and the Chamber office provides a wealth of information for people who are new to the area or looking for more ways to link with the community and local businesses.

ROSEVILLE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT UPDATE

Rich Pierucci Superintendent

Proud of the High Quality Education in RosevilleWe are very fortunate to live and

work in an area with such a strong and vibrant sense of community. The strong bond that exists between the school districts in the greater Roseville area and the community at large has been evident for many years. Maintaining this dynamic over a long period of sustained growth is very noteworthy. There are very few school districts in our state that benefit more from and enjoy the strong relationships that exist between the schools and local community than our Roseville area.

Roseville City School District is opening our ninth new school since 2000 this fall. Fiddyment Farm Elementary is located in the Fiddyment Farm Development in West Roseville. This is the third school of five to be opened in the West Plan Area. Our school district is very proud that we

have been able to build nine schools in the past thirteen years without having to rely on revenue from local property owners for construction costs.

All of the schools in the Roseville City School District benefit from strong support and relationships from a variety of

community partners. From the City being there to support us with new development projects, to local businesses providing money and services to neighborhood

schools, to the Chamber of Commerce always promoting strong school-business ties, to local faith-based organizations providing work crews to help beautify school grounds and facilities, to parents raising significant PTC funds and helping the district foundation grow, to land developers working cooperatively to address new growth challenges, a strong sense of community is everywhere.

The four school districts in the greater Roseville area are appreciative and thankful to everyone that helps contribute

to our area being one of the best places to live in California. We will continue to do our part by providing the community with very high quality public education systems.
