What was I Getting Into?

• This initially seemed like an overwhelming task. Where do I begin?

• Will it be stormy seas or smooth sailing?

• I started looking for help in all the right places.

Welcome to UCP

• My time was spent at UCP Bailes/East Orange Campus. It is a charter school with children from pre-k to first grade for now.

About the School• It is a fully inclusive school located in

Central Florida Research Park.• Disabled children receive therapy on site.• In this community everyone fits in.• Volunteers are always needed.• Currently they have students from pre-k to

1st grade, but plan on adding additional grades as needed.

• There are 21 classrooms, but not all of them are filled yet.

A Little About Me• I am a mom, a wife, a sister, a

daughter, a student and a volunteer.

• Currently I am a substitute teacher at a preschool.

What I Did

• Initially I joined a group called break buddies and visited the classroom 3 times in two hour blocks.

• I continued to visit the classroom, but joined another group who were creating science lessons and activates for teachers to use. We met every Tuesday, and would visit classes, present our lessons and talk about how to improve them.

Our Project

Who We Helped• The science labs we created were meant

to be used from grades kindergarten through third. UCP is an all inclusive school, so the exceptionalities vary from class to class.

• Class sizes range from 7 to 15 students. This year our project would help about 50 students, but it is a long term project.

• My team members were Jessica Delgado, Ashlee Gibbon, Kristene Graves, Valerie Koehler, Molly Lonergan and we were led by Kelly Grillo.

My Final Thoughts• As soon as you step into UCP you notice a few

things. You notice students who do not even realize the differences among them. You notice a school building created with all of it’s students in mind. Finally you see that every one of these students are capable of completing the tasks before them, they just need us to open the door for them.
