Energy - A Balanced Future 3

This year’s National Conference is the fourth and maintains the theme of ‘Energy – A Balanced Future’.

Under this continuing theme we aim to update our members on previous Conference topic areas at the same time as looking forward to future developments within the energy industry that will ensure that the UK economy is powered securely under a balanced energy mix.

This forward looking approach is particularly evident at this year’s event as we look for the first time at the issues, challenges and opportunities surrounding the extraction and utilisation of the UK’s reserves of shale gas.

Delegates will be well aware of Government announcements over the last twelve months aimed at creating the right environment for the creation of an industry focussed on shale gas recovery and utilisation.

At the Conference we will hear about the United States’ journey to near self-sufficiency in gas as well as looking at what the future may hold for the UK as it seeks to maximise the role of shale gas in the energy mix.

During the Conference programme delegates will hear a global energy review, as well as being given an insight into the continuing role of offshore oil and gas and updates on new nuclear and offshore wind; both of which will be key

components of a balanced energy future in the decades to come.

The evening prior to the Conference, at a networking reception, and during the day of the Conference, delegates will have opportunities to meet with leading industry executives to discuss key issues and challenges facing the supply chain in the coming years.

Although the main aim is to keep delegates informed of current and future developments we are also confident that the networking opportunities will lead to new relationships being formed and future business being secured.

The Conference is fast becoming the place where the energy industry meets to network and do business.

I hope you enjoy the entire event and I look forward to seeing you on the day.

NewcastleGateshead’s energy credentials are shaped by generations of engineers who have pioneered innovative solutions for centuries. Our inventive spirit stretches back to the 1800s when the area

was home to remarkable figures including Charles Parsons who revolutionised marine transport and Robert Stirling Newall who invented the brake-drum cone for laying cables in deep waters and brought wire rope manufacturing, cable laying technology and telegraph submarine cable to the English Channel and Atlantic Ocean.

Today, the area is at the forefront of developments in advanced subsea technology and has a reputation for engineering excellence which continually grows in strength, influence and importance across the global subsea industry. North East designed ROVS (Remotely Operated Vehicles) are leading the way in subsea exploration and construction. And we’re home to global companies such as GE Oil and Gas, SMD, Bibby Offshore, IHC Engineering Business Ltd, BEL Valves and Duco Ltd, part of the Technip Umbilical Systems.

The North East subsea industry is a UK centre of excellence and is made up of around 50 supply chain companies generating in excess of £1bn turnover each year, supporting over 10,000 jobs. The area is one of only six in England

designated by the UK Government as a Centre for Offshore Renewable Engineering (CORE).

Our supply chain companies operate internationally with a presence in key markets such as West Africa, South America, Gulf of Mexico and the Far East. On average, between 25% and 50% of North East subsea companies’ products and services are exported, and with most expecting an increase in turnover of around 29% within the next two years, the sector is going from strength to strength.

Supporting this rapid growth is a raft of industry-focused business and professional services. Specialist offshore and marine legal, finance and insurance expertise, as well as IP and recruitment consultancy are provided by highly respected and widely recognised organisations such as Bond Dickinson, Ryecroft Glenton, KPMG, NRG, Nigel Wright, North, Muckle LLP and Eversheds.

An extensive creative and digital sector has specific skills in design and software development that match the advanced technology being produced by the companies here and is applying its expertise across the subsea sector. animations and 3D offshore animations for the oil and gas, and renewable energy industries, most recently working with SMD and DeepOcean to create technical visualisations that demonstrate product capabilities and project processes.

The arrival of the £7m Neptune National Centre for Subsea and Offshore Engineering (due to open spring 2015) will ensure NewcastleGateshead remains at the leading edge of subsea research and development. The joint venture between Subsea North East, Newcastle University and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) is the first of its kind in the UK bringing together industry and academia to create a world-class engineering research facility. Plans for its development include a hyperbaric chamber capable of testing technology and materials at temperatures and pressures equivalent to those found at the deepest ocean depths.

The Neptune Centre will be situated on the North Bank of the River Tyne at the heart of the substantial subsea and offshore engineering cluster on Neptune Energy Park and play a crucial role in inspiring graduate level engineers, working closely with partners at other levels so that the North East can create a truly joined up skills pathway. It will complement the already strong collaboration between industry and academia to address the need for more highly specialised and

skilled engineers. Together with Newcastle University, Subsea North East has established the Msc in Subsea Engineering and Management and an Msc in Pipeline Management. Northumbria University has partnered with Penspen Integrity to provide a Postgraduate Certificate in Pipeline Integrity Management, which is available through distance learning, and Durham University’s Centre for Research into Earth Energy Systems is carrying out critical research in digital mapping, well site geology and drilling technologies – all directly relevant to the needs of today’s modern industries.

All of these fantastic assets provide a strong proposition and an abundance of opportunities for subsea industry companies looking to realise their ambitions for growth in an innovative and world-leading location. NewcastleGateshead’s Inward Investment Team provides a range of services to potential and existing investors. Our service is bespoke and is led by client needs.
